A Performance that Evoked Memories
1/31/08
The 2008 Cotton Bowl was indeed a successful game that highlighted the performance of Tony Temple, who was a running back of the Missouri Tigers. Due to the impressive performance of Temple in the 2008 Cotton Bowl, it was compared to the remarkable record of Dicky Maegle’s success.
During the 1954 Cotton Bowl, Maegle, who was then a running back of Rice University, broke through on a sweep from Rice’s five yard line, and was running down the sideline in front of Alabama's bench on his way to a touchdown. Alabama's fullback Tommy Lewis, jumped off of the bench without even putting on his helmet, and tackled Maegle. The referee Cliff Shaw, who saw what Lewis did, awarded the touchdown to Maegle that led to the victory of Rice University. Maegle was able to obtain 265 rushing yards in the 1954 Cotton Bowl.
On the other hand, Tony Temple obtained 281 rushing yards in the 2008 Cotton Bowl, when he broke loose for a spinning, tackle-breaking 40-yard touchdown run. He then rode to the bench on the arms of Chase Daniel and an offensive lineman due to a tweaked a hamstring injury. The Missouri Tigers won the fantastic 2008 Cotton Bowl game with a 38-7 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks.
