2013 BBVA Compass Bowl Game History:
The Birmingham Bowl game tradition began in 2006. Played at Birmingham 's Legion Field, sometimes referred to as the “Old Gray Lady,” the stadium has a capacity of 71,594. The gigantic stadium has been around for many years. Built in 1926, it has been home to many of Birmingham 's best teams and has hosted other Bowl Games in the past, including the Dixie Bowl from 1948 to 1949, the Outback Bowl, and the All-American Bowl.

The PapaJohns.com Bowl Game features the Southeastern Conference and the Big East Conference teams. If for some reason a team from either conference is unavailable to play, the Sun Belt Conference is an alternative consideration. In its short history, attendance was impressive for such a new event as fans filled more than half the stadium.

The Legion Field was named in honor of the American Legion of military veterans. The field is made of artificial turf. The stadium is rich with history, reminding us of the sacrifices made in the First World War with a monument to fallen soldiers consisting of massively carved sleeping lions.
