Birmingham Bowl started since 2006 as a post-season NCAA-sanction Division I-A college football bowl game. Since Birmingham Bowl was formed, it showed success with its four-year agreement with Conference USA to match a member of that conference versus an opponent from the Big East Conference. In the inaugural game of Birmingham Bowl, it featured the teams of South Florida Bulls and East Carolina Pirates. It was an exciting game that was attended by a crowd of 32,023 fans and supporters. South Florida, as led by Benjamin Williams, defeated East Carolina with a score of 24-7. Benjamin Williams was awarded as the MVP of the 2006 Birmingham Bowl.

The Birmingham Bowl was named Papajohns.com Bowl on the 16th of November 2006 as Papa John’s pizza became the title sponsor of the said bowl game. The city of Birmingham has been hosting bowl games since 1947. In fact from 1947-1948 it hosted the Dixie Bowl. By 1977-1985, Birmingham hosted the Hall of Fame Classic that fans really enjoyed watching. And from 1986-1990 the city hosted the All-American Bowl.

The Birmingham Bowl, now known as Papajohns.com Bowl, marked the return of post-season football to the city of Birmingham in 2006. Since then, it became a successful bowl game. In fact, its 2007 game was attended by a crowd of 35,258 that featured the Cincinnati Bearcats versus University of Southern Mississippi game. This was held on the 22nd of December, 2007. In addition, Ben Mauk was the MVP of the 2007 Birmingham Bowl game.
