The plus-one format of the Bowl Championship Series needs to be discussed and evaluated according to the BCS officials. By April, the commissioners from all 11 major college football conferences will meet to discuss the plus-one format in Miami.
The plus-one format could create a four-team major college football playoff. According to Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner, John Swofford, and Southeastern Conference commissioner, Mike Slive, if a plus-one format was followed, they would support seeding the top four teams after the regular season and playing No.1 vs. No.4 and No.2 vs. No.3 in bowl games, indeed creating two national semifinals.
To be able to negotiate a new television contract, the format that will be used for the 2011 season by the BCS, should be determined within the next nine to twelve months. However, as some of the commissioners would like to further evaluate the plus-one format, there were also some who have said that their university presidents are opposed to use the plus-one, in part because it could make the Rose Bowl less attractive.
On the other hand, Mike Swofford who takes over this year for Slive as the public face of the BCS said that a thorough evaluation and discussion are needed to determine if the plus-one format will be used.
