Valero Alamo Bowl Game History:
The Valero Alamo Bowl is an annual football game that takes place at the Alamodome in San Antonio , Texas . It is a match between the fourth or fifth best team from the Big Ten and Big Twelve conferences. It is so fashionable with local Texans and college football fans across the states that for the past four Bowl Games in a row the stadium has exceeded its maximum seating capacity of 65,000, with each attendance comprising 50% of people visiting from out of town.
The Bowl Game is a tradition that began with the completion of construction of the Alamodome in 1993. It has already undergone several name changes; the Builders Square , Sylvania , MasterCard, and now Valero Energy Corporation. The Alamo Bowl Game has grown so much in popularity that it has comprised eight of ESPN's 25-most watched bowl games in history.
The 2008 Alamo Bowl was a match between Northwestern Wildcats and the Missouri Tigers, with Missouri winning 30-23.
Alamodome Background and Information:
The Valero Alamodome is a recent addition to both the college and professional sports scene. Built in 1993, the City of San Antonio raised $186 million for the construction of this massive stadium. Its unique design spans more than eighteen acres and includes a nine-acre cable-suspended roof, a 12,000 capacity retractable seating system, making it the largest single unit in the world, a flexible floor grid stadium, formal entries, and large food courts.
In its relatively brief history, the Alamodome has been home to the NCAA Alamo Bowl, NFL New Orleans Saints, NBA San Antonio Spurs, CFL San Antonio Texans, the NCAA East-West Shrine Game, the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, and the NCAA UTSA Roadrunner's. The dome recently added fourteen additional luxury suites in 2006, increasing the amount to fifty-two. The Alamodome has also recently undergone more than a million dollars in new paint, as well as new entrances, a thicker playing surface on the field, a new four-sided scoreboard, two newly installed screens at each end of the field, as well as a new Daktronics sound system. The Alamodome is primed for the perfect all-inclusive Alamo Bowl experience.
