Charlotte Information and History
Charlotte, North Carolina's largest city and the seat of Mecklenburg County, is situated in the southern part of the state near the South Carolina border. It was named for King George III of England's wife, Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Settled about 1750, Charlotte was included as a city in 1768 and made the county seat in 1774. From 1800 to 1848, Charlotte was the center of U.S. gold manufacture. A branch of the U.S. mint operated there from 1837 to 1913. Charlotte was an important Confederate city during the Civil War and was the last gathering place of the full Confederate cabinet.

Charlotte has a rich history with its hall of commerce. Records show that there was a hall of commerce in Charlotte as early as 1876, although at that time it was known as a Board of Trade. In 1879 the name was distorted to the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and the organization sustained to operate until the 1890's when, for reasons unknown, it was disbanded. Samuel Wittkowsky was the first president of the chamber, serving during 1879-1880.
In 1879, Charlotte was a lot different than it is today. The Charlotte Observer printed its first subject that year. The stagecoach between Charlotte and Wadesboro was discontinued because so many people were buying their own wagons. Charlotte had 3 dentists, 9 policemen, 9 churches and 17 saloons. The inhabitants were 7,094 residents.
For unexplained reasons, activities of the association ceased around 1895 and did not begin again until 1905, when on October 20th, a group of civic minded Charlotteans gathered in a downtown office building (the former Piedmont Building) and prearranged the Greater Charlotte Club. This "Booster" club was the parent of what has become today the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce.
