Saul Canelo Alvarez Boxer Breakdown:
Alvarez grew up on a farm outside Guadalajara in the town of Juancatlan.  His brothers Ramon Alvarez, Ricardo Alvarez and Rigoberto Alvarez are all welterweight boxers.  Rigoberto Alvarez is the former WBA Interim World Champion.  In total there are six Alvarez brothers who are professional fighters. The family made boxing history in 2008 when all six Alvarez brothers fought on the same night. The nickname “El Canelo” is derived from the Spanish word “canela”, meaning cinnamon. Like his mother Alvarez had red hair and as a result his trainer Jose Reynosa gave Alvarez the nickname. Canelo started boxing under Reynosa at the age of thirteen, deciding to become a fighter after watching his older brother Rigoberto debut as a professional. Prior to turning pro Alvarez had a very successful amateur career, winning silver at the Junior Mexican National Championships in 2004 and winning the Junior Championship in 2005. After a brief amateur career that lasted twenty fights Alvarez turned pro at the age of sixteen.
