Lakers Face Durant and Howard This Week

Lakers Tickets Courtside

Lakers Bulls

With Steve Nash and Steve Blake in the fold things might be looking up, at least a little bit, for the Los Angeles Lakers. Nash and Blake returned to the Lakers lineup on Tuesday night in Minnesota, with Nash making his season debut. The depleted Lakers ended up losing Tuesday night at the hands of the Timberwolves, but then went on to win two in a row on the road before losing at home Sunday versus the Chicago Bulls.

Week Recap: Even with the return of Nash and Blake the Lakers continue to be the most snake bit team in the NBA when it comes to losing players. The return of their two point guards coincided with the loss of Nick Young and Jodie Meeks to injury. Wednesday’s night win in Cleveland saw Robert Sacre of the Lakers stay in the game after fouling out, a rarely seen NBA rule, due to the fact the Lakers had just five players left. After already losing Nick Young to injury and Jordan Farmar to leg cramps the Lakers were down to five players after Chris Kaman fouled out. Even with a depleted roster the Lakers hit a season-high 18 three-point shots to defeat the Cavaliers and former Head Coach Mike Brown. Los Angeles continued their winning ways Friday night with a fourteen point defeat of the Philadelphia 76ers behind 19 points from Steve Nash on his 40th birthday. Steve Blake contributed 14 points and 8 assists in the victory. Even without Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol the return of Nash and Blake is a welcome sight for Lakers fans. The Lakers returned home Sunday to face a competitive Chicago Bulls team, losing a tough one, 92-86. Chicago ran out to a nineteen point lead and the Lakers rallied back but couldn’t close the gap in the end, losing despite a season-high 27 points from Chris Kaman. Unfortunately for the Lakers they may have lost Steve Nash again for a short period of time. Nash knocked knees with Kirk Hinrich in the third quarter, causing his knee to flare up once again. He’ll be evaluated and may miss a couple of games.

Staples Center

The Week Ahead: The Lakers have a big home stretch coming up with five games at STAPLES Center over the next two weeks, including two with key Western Conference contenders. Los Angeles kicks off the week Tuesday night when they host the Utah Jazz. The Jazz are coming off of an impressive home victory over the Miami Heat. Following the All Star Break the Lakers return home next week when they face off versus the Houston Rockets in a game that many Lakers fans have had circled on the calendar since last summer. Wednesday will mark the return of former Lakers center Dwight Howard to STAPLES Center. The gifted big man, who had an up and down season in LA last year, has teamed with James Harden to put the Rockets in the fourth playoff position in the west. CP3 Returns To Clippers Lineup

The Los Angeles Clippers had an outstanding finish to the week, welcoming back Chris Paul in the process. After losing to Denver and Miami to start the week the Clippers rebounded with consecutive victories over Toronto and Philadelphia, the latter marking the return of Chris Paul. The Clippers star point guard returned earlier than expected, helping the Clippers blow out the 76ers 123-78.

Blake Griffin has monster Dunks

Blake Griffin

Week Recap: The Clippers kicked off a week with a visit to Denver to take on the Nuggets at Pepsi Center. Blake Griffin had another massive game but the Nuggets pulled out the victory on Randy Foye’s three point shot at the buzzer. Foye’s deep three pointer came just six seconds after Matt Barnes hit a three on the other end of the court to give the Clippers a 115-113 lead. Griffin, playing the best basketball of his career in the absence of Paul had 36 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Following the tough defeat in Denver the Clippers had the tough task of returning home to STAPLES Center to face Lebron James and the Miami Heat. The NBA was treated to one of its best games of the season as James and Griffin put together tremendous individual performances. The Clippers made a valiant effort to overcome a big Miami third quarter lead, but they couldn’t quite make it all the way back. The story for the Clippers was Griffin who had a season-high 43 points in the loss. It was Miami’s first win at STAPLES Center in six seasons. James had 31 points, 12 assists and 8 rebounds for Miami. It was a tough second consecutive loss for the Clippers, putting them a half a game behind the Houston Rockets for the fourth playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Clippers rebounded from the Miami loss with consecutive victories over Eastern Conference foes, Toronto and Philadelphia. Saturday night Blake Griffin again scored over 30 times, this time with 36, to become the first Clippers player ever to score more than 30 in three straight games. The Clippers momentum continued into Sunday night when they scored an incredible 46 first quarter points en route to easily defeating the 76ers behind another strong performance from Blake Griffin.

LA Clippers Vs Blazers

Clippers Vs Blazers

The Week Ahead: The Clippers have a light schedule heading into next week’s All Star weekend with just one game, an important matchup with the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night. The Blazers are currently a game and a half on top of the Clippers for the third playoff spot in the west. Los Angeles is a half a game ahead of the Houston Rockets, currently on a five-game winning streak. Following the All Star Break the Clippers return home for a key game versus the San Antonio Spurs before heading off on a three-game road stretch that includes a key game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Over the next two weeks the Clippers will face each of the three teams ahead of them in the Western Conference standings, giving them an opportunity to make up ground. Chris Michaels.

Should The Lakers Keep Kobe Bryant Out For The Season

Kobe Bryant Lakers

Kobe

The latest news about Kobe Bryant and his knee injury state that the Black Mamba will remain sidelined for three more weeks. He will also miss the 2014 All Star Game. Multiple sources point out that Bryant feels internal swelling pain in his knees and that’s why he will have to extend his rehabilitation period. Now the Los Angeles Lakers face a significant question: Should they just keep Kobe out for the remainder of the 2013-2014 campaign?

The Lakers can almost be considered as done for the season. The team currently stands in the second spot of the bottom in the Western Conference, holding a 16-30 record. Due to very high level of competiveness within the conference, it will be almost impossible for the Lakers to overcome the 10-game deficit they have from the eighth-seeded team, which currently is the Dallas Mavericks. But even if they manage to get the ticket for the postseason they won’t go far. If the Lakers finish eighth, they will face the first-seeded team in the West, which will be either the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Portland Trail Blazers or the San Antonio Spurs. And it’s easy for every fan of the team to imagine what the outcome of such a series would be.

Kobe Bryant Los Angeles Lakers

Kobe Bryant

As a matter of fact, if Bryant comes back this season the Lakers won’t see a big difference in their final ranking. Even the Black Mamba’s contribution might not be enough for Mike D’Antoni’s team to bounce back. In addition, the Lakers would also risk Kobe’s health if he is rushed back. The 35-year old Bryant certainly needs some time to fully rehab now that he has the chance.

Allowing Kobe to fully rest for the season seems to be the most rational choice for the Lakers at the moment. The main focus of the team should be the near future, the upcoming season. That’s why they should take their attention off Kobe and start planning their next moves to strengthen their roster, either through trades or significant moves. The Lakers will also have to focus on the upcoming, star-loaded NBA Draft. Then they will have a great opportunity to land potential superstar.

Kobe Bryant LA Lakers

Kobe

Certainly, Kobe Bryant is always a hot topic in LA. Every fan of the team wants to see him dressed up and ready to play when the Lakers are playing in the Staples Center. In fact, Bryant is one of the main reasons many fans support the team. Bryant is a big part of the Lakers franchise at the moment. Nevertheless, if the Lakers think rationally, they will realize that due to the bad situation the team is in at the moment, they will have to find the best way to bounce back quickly.

The team has to undergo significant changes soon. Steve Nash obviously can’t contribute, Pau Gasol is unhappy with the team and the Lakers neither several draft picks nor assets to trade away. Thankfully, as of lately, some young players, like Manny Harris and Kendall Marshall, have started to show promising sings. Now that Kobe is out, they will have a chance to see more playing time, gain experience and be on his side for the next season. Chris Michaels

The LA Kings Arent Playing Like It

Kings Vs Ducks Tickets

Kings Vs Ducks

In a week where they badly needed to pick up some key victories the Los Angeles Kings are mired in perhaps their toughest stretch of the season, going winless over the past week to run their overall losing streak to five games. After losing consecutive road games in Boston and Columbus Los Angeles returned to Sourthern California and were swept in back-to-back games by their LA rivals, the league leading Anaheim Ducks. The second of the back-to-back contests was the much anticipated outdoor game at Dodger Stadium, taken by the Ducks 3-0.

Kings Vs Ducks Tickets

Kings Vs Ducks

Week Recap: Monday night the Kings lost a tough one in Boston to a solid Bruins team. Boston jumped on top 2-0 on first period goals by Brad Marchand and Torey Krug. The Kings fought back to tie the game on goals by Willie Mitchell and Jeff Carter, only to see Marchand score his second goal of the game just 18 seconds after Carter scored to tie the game at 2. The Bruins would hold on to the victory, and the Kings would go on to Columbus for the second half of a back-to-back. The Kings scored the first goal Tuesday night in Columbus on a tally by Dwight King only to see the Blue Jackets score consecutive first period goals by RJ Umberger and Ryan Johansen to go up 2-1. Jeff Carter notched his 20th goal of the season early in the second to tie the game at 2, but the Blue Jackets took control with three consecutive goals to put the game away. Martin Jones had a tough night in goal for the Kings. With three consecutive losses the Kings returned to Southern California for two with Anaheim. The Thursday and Saturday games were a big test and the chance for Los Angeles to make up ground on the NHL leaders. The two games, won by Anaheim via a combined score of 5-1 are an indication of just how strong of a club the Ducks have become. Anaheim is seemingly able to adapt to any opponents style, winning high scoring contests as well as gritty defensive games, like Thursday night at the Honda Center. The Kings were shut out Saturday night by the Ducks Jonas Hiller, putting the Ducks 19 points up on their division rivals.

Kings Schedule this week

Up next for the Kings: The upcoming schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Kings. Pittsburgh’s trip to Los Angeles will give Kings fans their lone opportunity to see the universally regarded best player in hockey, Sidney Crosby. The Penguins star is on track to win yet another league MVP award this season.

Where they stand: With 64 points the Kings are in sixth place in the Western Conference, five points behind the Colorado Avalanche and twelve points behind the San Jose Sharks.

Should The Lakers Tank?

Lakers Home Court

Staples

It’s been a tough month since the return of Kobe Bryant for the Los Angeles Lakers. Prior to the return of their superstar the Lakers were contending for the 8th seed in the Western Conference with a revitalized young roster playing a more exciting brand of basketball. Upon Bryant’s return the Lakers struggled incorporating their star back into the lineup. Less than two weeks into his comeback Bryant suffered another injury, putting him on the shelf for six weeks and sending the Lakers into a tailspin. Since Bryant returned on December 8 versus the Toronto Raptors the Lakers are 4-13, including a current streak where they’ve lost nine of ten games. The poor run of play includes STAPLES Center losses versus Philadelphia, Milwaukee and Utah. The Lakers are now third from last in the Western Conference, just two and a half games up on last place Utah. Even with the return of Kobe Bryant the playoffs are unlikely for the Lakers this season, giving Lakers management some big decisions to make regarding whether or not to hold a fire sale before the trade deadline. The presence of one of the greatest college draft classes in years has once again brought up the possibility of teams ‘tanking’ the season in order to get more ping pong balls in the lottery. The NBA’s system doesn’t guarantee the top draft pick to the worst team but the weighted lottery does give teams with the best record a higher chance of a low draft pick. Right now the Lakers are well-positioned to not only have the flexibility to add a max free agent after next season, they should be in the running to draft a potential future All Star in next June’s draft.

Should the Lakers tank the second half of the season?

They’ve earned the slack: The Lakers have continually put a winning product on the floor for decades, avoiding the full rebuilding process that many great franchises have gone through. Next to perhaps the San Antonio Spurs it’s difficult to find another NBA franchise that has had such continued excellence over the past 20 years. For that reason the Lakers have earned a bit of slack from their fan base.

The upcoming draft is important: Next June’s draft features one of the best crops in years with several potential All Star talents. A poor finish can mean a top five draft pick. Kansas center Joel Embiid and forward Andrew Wiggins, Kentucky power forward Julius Randle, Duke forward Jabari Parker, Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart and Arizona forward Aaron Gordon should all be available in June’s draft and are potential difference makers. The selection of a top draft pick combined with the targeting of a key free agent could rebuild the Lakers roster quickly. This June’s draft is important since the Lakers traded their 2015 first round pick to Phoenix as part of the Steve Nash trade. It’s hard to imagine a proud franchise like the Lakers tanking the second half of the season, but if they are going to tank this is the year to do it.

Pau Gasol

Gasol

They need value for Gasol: The Lakers would be wise to deal Pau Gasol before the trade deadline. The potential Cavaliers trade which would have sent Gasol to Cleveland for Andrew Bynum (who would have been waived), fell through and the Bulls ended up making the deal. The Lakers need to determine quickly if Gasol is not in their long term plans. Dealing him and getting a package of players or an expiring contract to waive would help Los Angeles avoid the luxury tax while potentially picking up a player or draft pick. With the February 20 trade deadline fast approaching the Lakers should find a suitable place to ship Gasol, getting some value in return. Even with a player option for next season it’s questionable whether he would want to return. Letting Gasol walk for nothing next summer would free up cap space, but wouldn’t give the Lakers anything of value for a top ten NBA center.

Kobe Bryant Lakers

Kobe

The Lakers decision to re-sign Kobe Bryant to a 2 year/$48 million deal does limit their options over the next few seasons. At best they have the opportunity to sign one max free agent. Next offseason Kevin Love will have the ability to opt out of his contract and the former UCLA big man may be interested in moving back to Los Angeles. A good draft pick this year combined with moving Gasol for an asset and leveraging the Lakers remaining cap space well could give the Lakers the ability to contend after next season. The most important thing now though is to maximize their draft value this season.

LA Kings Having Trouble Scoring

LA Kings Goal

LA Kings

With three games at STAPLES Center and Jonathan Quick back in the lineup last week was a big week for the Los Angeles Kings. With the Anaheim Ducks running out to a commanding lead in the division the Kings were looking to make up ground on the Ducks. The Kings performed well, outshooting their opponents by a wide margin, but unfortunately ran into red hot goaltending from both the Minnesota Wild and the Detroit Red Wings. Behind strong performances from Wild goaltender Darcy Kuemper and Red Wings netminder Jimmy Carson the Kings finished the week with a win, a loss and an overtime loss.

Kings Vs Red Wings

Kings Vs Wings

Week Recap: After defeating the Vancouver Canucks to kick off their home stand the Kings welcomed in the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night, minus goaltenders Josh Harding and Nicolas Backstrom, were starting third-stringer Darcy Kuemper in net. Kuemper put together a career-best performance, stopping 39 of the 40 shots he faced before Nino Niedereitter scored to put the game into overtime and then notched the game-winner in the shootout. The Kings returned to action on Thursday with an impressive victory over the Boston Bruins, perennial Eastern Conference power. The Kings jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind goals from Jeff Carter, Justin Williams and Alec Martinez, a lead that would eventually go to 4-1. Quick notched the victory, his second in three starts since his return. Unbeated in regulation in their last three games, Los Angeles welcomed in the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night. Los Angeles again dominated possession and shots on goal but lost at the hands of a hot goaltender. Jimmy Carson, who’ll join Quick on the USA hockey team, stopped 44 of the 45 shots he faced in earning the victory.

Up next for the Kings: Los Angeles has one game remaining in their home stand, an important matchup with the Vancouver Canucks. Tickets for the Kings Vs Canucks are still available. Los Angeles kicked off the five game STAPLES Center stand by defeating the Canucks 3-1 in Quick’s first start back after missing nearly two months with an injured groin. The Canucks are currently in fourth place in the Pacific, two points behind the Kings and vying for a playoff spot in the tough Western Conference. A win for the Kings is crucial; following the Canucks game Los Angeles heads off on the road for a five-game road swing. The Kings round out next week with difficult road trips to St. Louis and Detroit. The last time Los Angeles visited the Blues, on January 2, they suffered their biggest loss of the season, 5-0. The Blues loss was the final Kings game before the return of Quick.

Where they stand: Los Angeles is currently in 6th place in the Western Conference, two points behind in the Colorado Avalanche and two points up on the Vancouver Canucks. They are 14 points behind the Anaheim Ducks who are on yet another long winning streak, of six games. In two weeks the Kings will have an immediate opportunity to make up ground on Anaheim, with consecutive games versus the Ducks, an outdoor game at Dodger Stadium and a matchup at STAPLES Center.By:Chris Michaels.

Playing without point guard Chris Paul the Los Angeles Clippers demonstrated depth and resiliency in going 3-0 on the week, all at STAPLES Center. The three game winning streak kept the Clippers a game up on the red hot Golden State Warriors for fourth place in the tough Western Conference. Los Angeles is four games behind the San Antonio Spurs for the top mark, and three games behind Portland and Oklahoma City who are in a tie for second place. The Clippers are in the midst of four days off before they host the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night. Following the Mavericks game the Clippers head off on the road.

Clippers

Week Recap: The Clippers kicked off the week with a twenty point victory over the Orlando Magic behind a huge performance from DeAndre Jordan. The Clippers center had a massive stat line consisting of 14 points, 17 rebounds and 8 blocked shots. The big story, behind Jordan, was the performance of Darren Collison, filling in for Chris Paul. Collison scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half to put the game away. Wednesday night the Clippers welcomed in the gritty Boston Celtics, the first time Doc Rivers faced his former team in Los Angeles. Blake Griffin scored 29 and Jamal Crawford chipped in 26 to help the Clippers run their home record to 16-3 on the season and notch another victory without Chris Paul. Darren Collison was steady at the point again with 15 points and 6 assists in the win. The Clippers strong play continued Friday night in their 123-87 destruction of the struggling Lakers. The Clippers outscored the Lakers by 18 in the first quarter and then outscored the Lakers by 24 in the third quarter to win the game going away. JJ Redick returned, scoring 19 points, part of a huge performance from the Clippers starting unit. Blake Griffin had 33 points and 12 boards while Darren Collison scored 20 in the blowout victory. The Clippers held the Lakers to just 34 percent shooting and 21 turnovers in the impressive victory.

The Week Ahead: The Clippers host the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night before heading off on what may be a season-defining seven game road trip. After hosting Dallas the Clippers round out the week with visits to the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers. New York has struggled most of the season but is coming off an impressive win over the Miami Heat. Indiana currently has the top record in basketball and play in one of the toughest home environments in the NBA. Indiana will be a major test for the Clippers and should serve as a solid litmus test for how good the Clippers are without Chris Paul. By:Chris Michaels.
