SAP Center Events You Dont Want To Miss

The SAP Center at San Jose is affectionately referred to as The Shark Tank. The SAP Center is home to the San Jose Sharks, San Jose’s star NHL team. The indoor arena was originally called the San Jose Arena, then the Compaq Center, then the HP Pavilion and now the SAP Center at San Jose. The original San Jose Arena opened to the public in 1993. The story of the SAP Center is actually kind of cool! In the 1980’s, local San Jose citizens felt the city needed its own indoor venue, so they started a movement called FAN, or “Fund Arena Now”. They lobbied, pursued contracts with the city, and sought sponsors and partners with the NHL and NBA. Finally the mayor of San Jose, Tom McEnery, met with FAN and decided to apportion local taxes for the arena. Construction took place in 1991. It was delayed somewhat after the San Jose Sharks wanted to upgrade to NHL standards to include luxury suites, a press box, and a larger seating capacity.

Finally by 1993, it was ready to open. It was called the San Jose Arena from its opening until 2001. Then Compaq secured the naming rights in a twelve-year contract. But the following year HP bought Compaq, hence the arena changing its name to the HP Pavilion. HP also contributed to several upgrades for the venue, including a new LED video display from Daktronics. Then in 2013 the German software company SAP, which was co-founded by the San Jose Sharks managing partner Hasso Plattner and is SAP’s chairman of the board, bought the naming rights in a five-year, $3.35 million/year agreement. The SAP Center opened at a cost of $162.5 million at that time. Today that translates to $265 million. The architects of the vast arena were Sink Combs Dethlefs and Prodis Associates. The venue seats a variety of capacities, including 19,190 for concerts, 18,549 for basketball and the NBA and NCAA, 18,300 for wrestling and the WWE, 17,652 for ice hockey and the NHL, and 11,386 for tennis and the ATP and USTA.

Sap Center Events Suite SeatsThe SAP Center also offers Penthouse Lofts offer the small and intimate benefit of private suites, or fans can purchase two adjoining suites with their own connecting interior doors for larger groups. LA Kings Drop Game One To Sharks

LA Kings Vs Sharks Tickets

SHARKS VS KINGS

In order to take back home ice advantage and bring the series back to STAPLES Center with the opportunity to take a commanding lead the Los Angeles Kings need to win one of the first two games of their opening Western Conference series in San Jose. The NHL playoffs are all about quick starts and momentum and as the road team statement games are important. Unfortunately for the Kings the opening game couldn’t have been more painful. Feeding off the energy of a capacity home crowd the San Jose Sharks stormed out to a 5-0 lead as they utterly dominated Jonathan Quick and the Kings.

The game was the polar opposite of last season’s second round series in which the Sharks struggled to solve Quick. Los Angeles ended up winning that series in seven, with home ice advantage being a big component. In a series that has been incredibly evenly matched, last night’s game was a surprise. The surprising loss sets up an extremely important second game of the series. In order to capture momentum the Kings will need a big performance and will need to flip the recent history between the two clubs. Over the past two seasons 17 of the last 18 matchups have been won by the home team.

KINGS

The good thing for Los Angeles is they have a proven playoff performer in net with Quick, who will be motivated to make up for an unusual subpar performance. Quick gave up three first period goals for the first time in his NHL playoff career. Quick was pulled for rookie Martin Jones in the third and the Kings made a valiant attempt to storm back into the game with three goals, by Jake Muzzin, Slava Voynov and Trevor Lewis. The three tallies made the score 5-3 before Brent Burns put home an empty netter to set the final margin of 6-3.

SHARKS

In game two the Kings will look to recapture the momentum they had in the third period, while standing up to the Sharks physical style. San Jose played near perfect hockey in the first two periods, specifically keeping Drew Doughty off balance with physical play. San Jose also received solid goaltending from Antti Niemi, a major question mark heading into the series. Look for the veteran Kings to bounce back and eliminate some of the sloppy play that turned into odd man rushes and offense from the Sharks third and fourth lines.

Game two of the series is set for Sunday night at the SAP Center in San Jose, with the series making its way to STAPLES Center for games three and four on Tuesday and Thursday of next week. If the Kings can steal game two, behind a solid performance from Quick, they’ll be well positioned to get right back into the series.

Even with losses in four of their last five games the Los Angeles Kings held on and earned the 6th position in the NHL playoffs, finishing two points on top of the Minnesota Wild. The Kings 6th place finish has set up one of the most eagerly anticipated first round playoff matchups, a rematch of last year’s second round series between the Kings and the San Jose Sharks. Last season the Kings defeated the Sharks in seven spirited games, a series were the home team won each matchup. By virtue of an outstanding regular season the Sharks will have home ice advantage.

LA Kings Vs Sharks

KINGS VS SHARKS

Season Series: The Kings held the advantage in the season series between the two teams, three games to two. The Kings won one of the three games played in San Jose, a 1-0 shutout by Jonathan Quick on January 27th. The Sharks won the last game between the two teams, a 2-1 win on April 3. Other than a 4-1 Kings victory on December 19th all of the games were decided by a goal, indicative of just how closely matched the two teams are. The tight games in the season series mirror last year’s playoff matchup in which all seven games of the series were decided by just a lone goal.

San Jose Sharks- who to watch: The Sharks feature a deep roster of veterans that has been together through several playoff appearances. The aging combination of Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau are still strong performers along with young stars such as Joe Pavelski, Logan Couture and Brent Burns. Pavelski led the Sharks in scoring this season with 41 goals, while Marleau contributed 33. Right Wing Brent Burns, a former defenseman, and Couture give the Sharks tremendous size and speed up front with both scoring over 20 goals this season.

KINGS Vs SHARKS

Why the Kings will win: The Sharks had a better regular season, but the NHL playoffs are a whole new season and the Los Angeles Kings are built for the playoffs. Stanley Cups are won with good goaltending and the Kings have an advantage in net with Jonathan Quick. Quick has proven time and time again that he performs best in pressure situations and should have the advantage over Antii Niemi. Niemi had a strong overall regular season but has struggled in the month of April. The Sharks will need their veteran goaltender to be in strong form. Offensively the Kings have benefited from the acquisition of Marian Gaborik, a trade deadline pickup from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Garborik has scored 15 points in 18 games as a member of the Kings, giving their offense an additional component. The key for Los Angeles is earning a victory in San Jose to wrest home ice advantage away from the Sharks.

Prediction: Kings in six.
