What to do with six outfielders?

LA Dodgers Tickets

Heading into the offseason many national experts questioned how the Dodgers, when Matt Kemp returns, would manage having four starting caliber outfielders for five positions. With Kemp healthy and showing signs of his past self, as well as the evolution of Scott Van Slyke as a difference-maker versus left-handed starters and the AAA dominance of Joc Pederson, the Dodgers now have six potential outfield choices.

Ordinarily such extreme depth is a huge positive, but is five too many? Or, with Joc Pederson is six too many?

The Dodgers have a solid balance of right-handed and left-handed hitters, ideal for such a situation. There’s also a good mix of young and old, speed and power. On paper it’s an ideal situation. Unfortunately an ideal situation doesn’t always necessarily translate to a good balance on the field. Like any professional sport, baseball is a game of feel and tempo. Players who can play every other day and still perform can be unique. So who what is the Dodgers ideal starting lineup? By most accounts the preferred starting three-some is Carl Crawford, Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig. It’s a solid mix of speed and power, the Dodgers ideal defensive arrangement. Thus far the Dodgers have done an excellent job of getting everyone playing time, with a couple of early season injuries (Puig) and a paternity leave thrown in (Crawford).

Dodgers Joc Pederson

Even with a deep payroll the Dodgers will have choices to make in the near future. After a strong spring training Joc Pederson is dominating in Triple AAA will soon be ready to be an everyday major league player. Like Puig, Pederson is an all around talent who the Dodgers will want to play every day. After his big performance in the Cactus League Pederson is off to a tremendous start in Albuquerque, with a .442/.564/.884 batting line. In twelve games he has four doubles, five homers, four steals and 12 walks. Pederson, who turns 22 on Tuesday, is a local favorite having played his college baseball at USC. He’s a potential all-star, but also a major potential trade piece for a team looking to make a World Series run.

Would the Dodgers trade Pederson? A team like the Tampa Bay Rays would likely be willing to listen to a potential trade offer for David Price if it includes a player like Pederson. Price is arguably the second best left-hander in baseball (behind Clayton Kershaw) and he’d give the Dodgers an incredible starting rotation with three elite lefthanders and Zack Greinke. The Dodgers have the ability to sing a long-term deal with a player like Price, but the cost of dealing Pederson may be too much for a player like Price, especially when they could simply just sign Price in the offseason.

Yasiel Puig

With Pederson on fire in AAA and the Dodgers batting lineup struggling of late the Dodgers may want to take a look at calling Pederson up. With the continued off-the-field distractions that Yasiel Puig provides, a spurt back in the minors could be good for Puig. This move would also give the Dodgers a real barometer of what they have in Pederson. Another potential move would be to call up Pederson as an alternative to Carl Crawford. With a massive contract the Dodgers have little flexibility with Crawford, but they also have the financial means to stash a player like Crawford on the bench. After a solid playoff season last year Crawford has struggled early on. The re-emergence of Dee Gordon has also given the Dodgers an alternative at the lead-off position. If Gordon can continue his solid play the Dodgers could very well be tempted to insert a player like Pederson in the lineup on an everyday basis.

The best move for the Dodgers may be to just hold tight and see how the season evolves. Matt Kemp has shown flashes of brilliance but his overall numbers have been inconsistent. If Pederson continues his assault on AAA pitching the Dodgers will find a spot for him in the lineup, somewhere. The ideal future lineup should consist of Puig, Pederson and a healthy Matt Kemp, but after the last couple of seasons Kemp will need to prove his ability to stay healthy.

Dodgers Tickets

April 4-6 San Francisco Giants: The Dodgers kick off the home portion of their schedule with a three game series against the arch-rival Giants. After a disappointing defense of their 2012 World Series title in 2014 the Giants are primed to compete with the Dodgers for the 2014 National League West title. After missing his start versus the San Diego Padres in the United States portion of the Dodgers season opener, lefthander Clayton Kershaw should make a start during the Dodgers home opening series. If the Giants rotation holds true to the Dodgers should see San Francisco’s top two starters, Madison Bumgarner and Matt Cain. Bumgarner has won 29 games the past two seasons while Cain, who had a subpar season by his standards in 2013, is still one of the top right-handed pitchers in baseball. Saturday’s game, a 1:10 Saturday start will feature a pre-game performance by Robin Thicke, while the first 15,000 fans under the age of 14 at Sunday’s game (April 6) will receive a Yasiel Puig Fathead.

April 8-9 Detroit Tigers: Following the Giants series the Dodgers welcome in perennial AL Power Detroit, led by two-time defending American League MVP Miguel Cabrera. The slugging first baseman, who won the Triple Crown in 2012, just signed the largest contract in the history of major league baseball, a ten-year $292 million extension. In addition to Cabrera the Tigers feature one of the top starting rotations in all of baseball, featuring last two winners of the American League Cy Young, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer. The first 40,000 fans at Tuesday’s game (April 8) will receive a hooded zip-up Dodgers sweater.

April 18-20 Arizona Diamondbacks: After two key early season road trips to Arizona and San Francisco the Dodgers return home for another series with the Diamondbacks, their third in less than a month. The series will be the culmination of seventeen division games the first nineteen games played, a crucial early test that will give the Dodgers a key opportunity to build an early lead. Although they clinched the division on the road in Phoenix the Dodgers struggled at Dodger Stadium versus the Diamondbacks in 2013. Friday’s game (April 18) will feature the traditional Friday Night Fireworks, while those attending the April 19th game will receive a Dodgers welcome matt. Sunday’s game (April 20th) will include the Viva Los Dodgers pre-game celebration, followed by the traditional Kids Run the Bases, following the game.

April 21-24 Philadelphia Phillies: Immediately after the Diamondbacks series the Dodgers welcome in the Philadelphia Phillies led by Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley. After a disappointing 2013 season the veteran Phillies will be looking to rebound in 2014. Beyond the afformentioned veteran sluggers the Phillies feature two of the more talented left-handers in baseball, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels. The first 40,000 fans at Tuesday’s game, April 22, will receive a fleece Dodgers blanket. In the series finale on Thursday night the Dodgers will have their first bobblehead giveaway of the season, the highly anticipated Clayton Kershaw “Cy Young” bobblehead.

April 25-27 Colorado Rockies: The Dodgers wrap up their April home schedule on April 25 when they begin a three game series versus Troy Tulowitzki and the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies have struggled the past two seasons in a tough NL West, but feature a solid lineup led by Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer. Friday’s game (April 25) includes the weekly Friday Night fireworks while those attending Saturday’s game (April 26) will get the opportunity to view a post-game screening of the Kevin Costner classic film Field of Dreams.

The Dodgers Are Ready Is Yasiel?

LA Dodgers Tickets

Two games in and the Los Angeles Dodgers couldn’t have asked for a better start. Traveling to Australia without Zack Greinke, Carl Crawford and Matt Kemp they outpitched the division rival Diamondbacks for two games to start the season 2-0. Even though the games were played in Australia they were technically “home” games for the Diamondbacks, giving the Dodgers two key road victories versus their fierce rivals. Clayton Kershaw was solid as usual in the first game, while Hyun-Jin Ryu threw five shutout innings in the second game. The Dodgers bats woke up in game two, scoring seven runs behind solid hitting performances from Yasiel Puig, Dee Gordon, Andre Ethier and Juan Uribe. The four players combined to go 9 for 18 and drive in five runs. Upon returning home the Dodgers have the annual Freeway Series with the Angels before they kick off the regular season on Sunday night in San Diego. You can purchase Dodgers Tickets for as low as $3.00 per ticket.

Just when it seems things couldn’t be better in the Dodgers camp controversy surrounding Yasiel Puig has started up again, after just two games. After a tough spring and an 0-fer in the first game in Australia, Puig went 3-5 in the second game, driving in two runs. At the plate he looked like the same player that tore up June, July and August last season. In classic Puig fashion the controversy came in the game where he registered three hits. While Puig looked locked-in at the plate he was an absolute disaster on the base paths, making two big base running errors that led to outs, one killing a potential larger Dodger scoring outburst. The second base-running error led to what was described as an intense discussion with Dodgers veteran first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Later on, during his last at bat, Puig swung and missed at a pitch and seemed flung his bat as though injured, prompting Manager Don Mattingly to question whether or not he was actually injured. Puig’s penchant for feigning an injury after a swing and miss, combined with his wild base-running is indicative of what Yahoo! Sports has referred to as his “maddening duality”. When engaged and playing error free baseball Puig is a potential superstar with Bo Jackson type athletic ability. During his rookie season the novelty of Puig helped energize and inspire the team. This season, one where the Dodgers have major expectations, his act may be wearing a little thin.

Yasiel Puig

So what to do with Puig? At a certain point will his antics outweigh his contribution on the field? The answer is likely no, or at least a bit more nuanced than many media members would insist. If Puig is hitting, like last season, he most likely has a spot in the lineup. The added element that wasn’t present last season though is the potential return of Matt Kemp. Kemp’s season-long injury issues coincided with the arrival and success of Puig. With the Dodger start center-fielder potentially returning soon the Dodgers have a full outfield of Kemp, Puig, Andre Ethier and Carl Crawford. If Kemp returns and produces, and Ethier continues to hit like he did in spring training, Mattingly will have a choice in who he inserts in the lineup. If Puig’s production suffers he just may find himself coming off the bench a bit more than expected. Chris Michaels.

The Dodgers return to on April 4th for a three game series against the San Francisco Giants starting with their Home Opener on April 4th, Robin Thicke singing on April 5th and Kids Yasiel Puig Fathead for the Sunday 5:00pm game. You can purchase Dodgers Vs Giants Tickets today.

Opening Day Week Away Are The Dodgers Ready?

LA Dodgers Tickets

After a double-header that saw the Dodgers compete in split squad games versus the San Diego Padres and the Chicago White Sox the team is off for the long trip to Australia for next weekend’s season opening two-game series versus the Arizona Diamondbacks. With the early opener just a week away, here are some Dodgers notes.

Urias impresses: In the opening game of their doubleheader on Saturday the Dodgers started seventeen-year-old Mexican pitcher Julio Urias. The young phenom, whose drawn comparisons to Fernando Valenzuela, struck out two of the three batters he faced with his fastball reaching 97 miles per hour. The signing of Urias points to the impressive finds by the Dodgers scouting department. Los Angeles signed Urias on the same trip that yielded them Yasiel Puig. Urias will start the season in high A Rancho Cucamonga, but may be on the fast track to the major leagues.

Final Tune-up for Kershaw: Clayton Kershaw started versus the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, giving up five earned runs in just over five innings, throwing 86 pitches. The Dodgers ace had a rough spring training by his standards with a 9.20 ERA, but should be ready to start the Dodgers season opener next weekend at the Sydney Cricket Grounds. The Dodgers will arrive in Australia five games prior to the opening series to get acclimated to the time difference.

Australian Opener: Due to the time difference between Australia and Los Angeles both games between the Diamondbacks and Dodgers will technically be played next Saturday. The opener, a night game in Australia, will be air at 1:00 AM Saturday in Los Angeles. The second and final game, an afternoon game in Sydney, will take place at 7:00 PM in Los Angeles. Clayton Kershaw will face Patrick Corbin in the opener, while Hyun Jin-Ryu will face Trevor Cahill of the Diamondbacks in the second game. After returning home the Dodgers will have a full eight games before they travel to San Diego to face the Padres in the US opener.

Puig’s Slump Continues: Unlike last spring where he hit over .500 and impressed everyone, it’s been a difficult spring for second year Cuban star Yasiel Puig. With just over thirty at bats Puig is hitting just .152 with a lone home run. Many stars have tough springs and it doesn’t mean they’ll have a slow start to the regular season, but Puig’s struggles are making many speculate whether or not the tough end to the season he had in 2013 will translate into this season. Opposing teams seemingly found a way to pitch the young star towards the end of last year, busting him inside with fastballs while throwing breaking balls away. How Puig looks at the plate will be an interesting storyline as the Dodgers make the trip to Australia.

Rotation Question Marks: When the Dodgers signed Paul Maholm from the Pirates it looked like they had more than enough starting pitchers to kick off the season. With Chad Billingsley still recovering from Tommy John surgery and Josh Beckett getting hit hard in his latest spring start, while battling a thumb injury, the Dodgers may be looking to Maholm to occupy the fifth starter position when the season begins. Maholm, who looked solid in his first couple of spring outings was hit hard by the Reds on Thursday, giving up six runs on six hits in just over two innings. At this point Maholm is likely the Dodgers fifth starter, especially with Stephen Fife being sent to the minor league camp. If he struggles out of the gate the Dodgers may quickly turn to Fife.

This is one of the most anticipated seasons for Dodgers fans in a while. After the miricle run in the 2013 season fans are hoping and expecting the Dodgers to make it further in the playoffs this year. Does spring training predict the season we shall see as Opening Day is just a week away for the Dodgers.

    2014 Dodgers Promotion Nights

    2014 Dodgers Promotion Nights

The Yasiel Puig Bobblehead Night, Clayton Kershaw “Cy Young” Bobblehead Night and Babe Ruth Bobblehead Night will definitely be big nights at Dodger Stadium I suggest you get there as early as possible to make sure that you get a bobblehead. The Original 30HR Club Bobblehead Night(Baker, Cey, Garvey, Smith) should also be a good one and a cool bobblehead the previous Cey, Russell, Lopes and Garvey “The Infield” Bobblehead is one of my favorite in my collect.

Some of the cool 2014 Giveaway and Promtional Nights at Dodger Stadium this year will be the Sunday April 6th Kids’ Yasiel Puig Fathead Night against the Giants. With it being early in the Dodgers Season, the draw of Yasiel Puig and of course their hated rivals the Giants it makes for a trifecta night of goodness and dont forget the Dodger Dogs. Vin Scully 65th Anniversary Commemorative Item Night on Tuesday July 29th against the Braves has the potential to be a bit of a tear jerk-er with lots of memories from the 65 years that Vin Scully has been with the Dodgers. Zip-Up Hooded Sweatshirt Night on Tues April 8th against the Triple Crown winner Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers is another game and giveaway I am looking forward to. By:Chris Michaels.

    Dodgers Increase Ticket Prices

    Los Angeles Dodgers

After a dynamic regular season that saw them advance to the National League Championship Series the Los Angeles Dodgers will be one of the favorites to win the World Series in the 2014 Major League Baseball season. Season tickets are now on sales for the 2014 regular season. With one of the most talented rosters in baseball included two-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw and National League Rookie of the Year runner-up Yasiel Puig the Dodgers will again be one of the premier sporting attractions in Los Angeles.

More than half of the season tickets will cost less than $20 per game, many less than $12, and for the first time in nearly three decades the club is setting aside tickets on the reserve level as little as $5 per game. Affordable ticket prices and one of the legendary home fields in baseball history makes Dodgers season tickets one of the greatest values among large-market Major League Baseball clubs. Dodger Stadium and the Los Angeles Dodgers offer families one of the best Los Angeles entertainment experiences with a range of options that will fit nearly every budget.

Here are the highlights of the 2014 Dodger season ticket offer:
    • More than 45,000 seats will increase by $3 or less.
    • 58 percent of the 56,000 seats at Dodger Stadium will have season tickets available for $20 or less.
    • More than 24,000 seats are available for $12 or less.
    • For the first time in 28 years there will be tickets on the Reserve level priced as low as $5. There is no increase more than $2 on this level.
    • Front-row seats between the bases will increase by $30 per game. Rows two through eight will increase by $20. Some Field-level seats are available for less than $20 per ticket, per game, which is less than in 2006.
    • The price for Loge MVP seats will remain the same. There is no increase more than $3 per game on this level.
    • Tickets on the Top Deck start as low as $7 per game.
    • Left-field pavilion tickets will increase by either $1 or $2 per ticket, per game. Tickets in the right-field pavilion were increased by $2 per ticket, per game.
    • There will be no increase for general admission season parking, while premium season parking will increase by $300 to $400 for the 2014 season.

Team President and CEO Stan Kasten on the exceptional Dodgers season ticket values: “Most Dodger tickets have not increased in price the last two seasons as we looked to first prove to our fans that this ownership group was committed to putting the best possible team on the field, providing a first-class fan experience at the stadium,” said Kasten.

The new ownership group has succeeded in meeting the expectations they created when the club was purchased. The Dodgers have one of the deepest and most talented lineups in baseball and the club has proven time and time again that they are willing to make whatever moves necessary to bring a World Series title back to Dodger Stadium for the first time since 1988.

    Dodgers Open Down Under

    Australia MLB

For the past several years Major League Baseball has worked hard to advance the interest in baseball around the globe. This includes kicking off the regular season with games in Mexico and Japan. This coming season the league will extend their outreach with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks kicking off the 2014 regular season in Sydney, Australia.

The decision to start the season in Australia has found quite a bit of support but also a significant amount of opposition from the two teams fan bases. The Dodgers and Diamondbacks will be loyal to the MLB cause and probably won’t complain too much, but traveling over 7000 miles to kick off the regular season could have obvious impact on the club’s ability to acclimate upon their return, due to the obvious jet lag. Like in years past MLB will give the clubs adequate time to recover before they set off to play the bulk of their regular season schedule. The two clubs will leave spring training early and then play a two game weekend series in Sydney, March 22-23. The Dodgers will then have a full week off to recover prior to heading down to San Diego to kick off the domestic portion of their schedule on March 31. The early game will give the Dodgers a slightly shorter Spring Training as in years past. The good thing for Dodgers fans is that both games in Australia will be Diamondback home games, giving Los Angeles the full 81 game schedule at Dodger Stadium for the upcoming season. It will also protect the Dodgers traditional home opener, which will take place Friday, April 4th versus their longtime rival San Francisco Giants.

Australia has long been and up and coming market for baseball talent with many current and former players from down under including former Dodgers Craig Shipley, Jeff Williams and Trent Oeltjen. Australian fans will get the opportunity to see what is quickly becoming one of the hottest rivalries in all of baseball. Although the Diamondbacks finished a distant second to the Dodgers last season the rivalry was amped up with a bench clearing brawl this past June. A massive fight ensued after Dodgers ace Zack Grienke was hit by a pitch. The two teams continued their war or words all season with several Diamondback players taking umbrage with the playing style of Yasiel Puig. The distaste between the two teams was amped up even more when the Dodgers clinched the divisional title in Phoenix and proceeded to celebrate in the pool Arizona has behind the right field fence. Beyond the dislike the clubs have for each other is the fact that they’ll be competing for the division title again this season and the two opening games in Australia can help set the tone of the coming regular season. The Dodgers will likely start with Clayton Kershaw and Zack Grienke on the mound, giving Aussie fans a glimpse of perhaps the best one-two rotation combination in baseball. If Los Angeles can sweep the two games down under they’ll have two road victories versus Arizona and an instant leg up in the division.
