Who To Pick For Your 2014 Fantasy Football Draft

FFThe NFL season is right around the corner and with that comes fantasy football. With many drafts fast approaching here’s a look at the top ten NFL fantasy draft targets for 2014. The annual running back versus quarterback debate is in full force once again. Although Peyton Manning put together the greatest passing season in NFL history, value in fantasy football is driven by running backs. Here’s a look at this year’s top draft targets:

1. Adrian Peterson: The best running back in the NFL is still the top overall running back and top overall fantasy pick. Although he didn’t replicate his extraordinary 2012 season, Peterson had nearly 1300 yards and ten touchdowns last season, with an outstanding 4.5 yards per carry. “All Day” has been Mr. Consistent during his NFL career, topping ten touchdowns in every NFL season and rushing for over 1200 yards in six of his seven NFL seasons. In an era of past-first offenses the Minnesota Vikings are a run-first organization. This season Peterson will get the opportunity to play for one of the top offensive coordinator minds in the NFL in former San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner. Look for Peterson to have another massive season in a deep NFC North.

ffdraft2. Jamaal Charles: The veteran Chief had a tremendous season in 2013 in his first season under new Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid. Charles didn’t carry the ball as much as previous seasons, but had as many touches as in the past due to his receiving ability in Reid’s west coast offense. Charles had 19 total touchdowns, 12 on the ground and 7 through the air. With a new contract and the threat of a holdout no longer in the offering, Charles should have another outstanding season via the rush and the pass.

3. LeSean McCoy: McCoy had a massive season in 2013 in his first season under Chip Kelly and there’s no reason to think the NFL’s leading rusher last season won’t repeat this coming season. To go along with his 1607 rushing yards McCoy had 11 total touchdowns. Under the innovative Kelly the Eagles will continue to put up points and feature McCoy, although there has to be some concern whether or not Nick Foles can repeat his surprising season from a year ago at quarterback. If Foles somehow struggles it could affect McCoy.

beerr_top_0_04. Eddie Lacy: The second-year Alabama running back is one of the fastest risers in fantasy football. Lacy had a solid rookie season that included 1178 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns in a season where the Packers played nearly have the regular season without star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. With a healthy Rodgers back under center and the return of right tackle Bryan Bulaga and Randall Cobb from injury the Packers should once again have one of the top offenses in the NFL. Look for Lacy to have a massive season, topping both his 2013 totals in rushing yards and touchdowns. With 35 catches in 2013 Lacy also proved better than expected in the passing game and should have more receptions this coming season. If the Packers offense is as good as expected Lacy could be the top player in fantasy by the end of the upcoming season.

5. Peyton Manning: Conventional wisdom still makes drafting a running back the most sound fantasy draft decision due to the value of the position. From a sheer point scoring dominance though, Peyton Manning had one of the most remarkable fantasy seasons in history last year. Manning shredded the NFL record book with 55 passing touchdowns and should have another dominant season in 2014, even with the loss of wide receiver Eric Decker to the New York Jets. Manning will be hard pressed to match the 55 touchdowns he threw a year ago, but should lead the league in touchdown passes once again.

6. Aaron Rodgers: Rodgers had a frustrating 2013 season after going down with a broken collarbone and missing half the regular season. When healthy Rodgers is a proven fantasy performer whose led the NFl in fantasy points in the past. With a healthy Randall Cobb and the presence of Eddie Lacy the Packers offense should once again be one of the best in football. Look for Rodgers to have a big season throwing the football, with an outside chance for 40 touchdowns, as well as a two or three rushing touchdowns.

kcdo7. Matt Forte: The Chicago Bears standout has quietly been one of the best running backs in the NFL for the past several seasons. Last year, his first under head coach Marc Trestman, Forte has yet another outstanding season with nearly 2000 combined yards and 12 touchdowns. Forte is a true every-down back, with 74 receptions in 2013. With a healthy Jay Cutler the Bears offense should be dynamic once again, with Forte leading the way.

8. Calvin Johnson: Megatron is head and shoulder above the rest of the receiving crop in the NFL. In a year where he battled multiple injuries Johnson still managed nearly 1500 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns. Although he was just the third ranked fantasy receiver in 2013, Johnson had arguably the worst luck of any NFL fantasy player last season, getting stopped at the one-yard line on numerous occasions. The league’s most talented receiver should have another massive season.

9. Marshawn Lynch: While Adrian Peterson and LeSean McCoy get all the headlines, Lynch has been the most productive NFL running back over the past three seasons from a scoring standpoint, with 35 total touchdowns. The defending Super Bowl champs are loaded once again and should have a big season, with Lynch leading the way.

ffr10. Drew Brees: The New Orleans Saints are loaded once again and Drew Brees should put together yet another massive season in 2014. The future Hall of Famer passed for over five-thousand yards for the 3rd consecutive season, en route to 39 touchdown passes and (5) thirty-point fantasy games. The resurgent Saints have a favorable schedule this coming season so look for Brees to put together yet another massive season. BY:

How much will the 49ers miss Aldon Smith?

49ers Aldon Smith

SMITH

Entering the season with a revamped secondary and questions around the return of All-World linebacker NaVorro Bowman, the San Francisco 49ers may play the 2014 without another key cog in their elite defense, elite pass rusher Aldon Smith. In the latest in the line of off-the-field issues, Smith was arrested at LAX this past week in a bizarre case that involved Smith declaring that he had a bomb with him. In the past couple of seasons Smith was charged with multiple DUI’s and completed rehabilitation for issues with alcohol. Through all of his off-the-field issues the 49ers have supported Smith, but according to the San Jose Mercury News that may be coming to an end. According to Tim Kawakami its likely Smith sits out the entire 2014 season. Beyond potential team disciplinary issues it’s possible that the NFL suspends Smith for an extended period of time, if charges are pressed against him.

Smith’s legal issues are the latest in a handful of off-the-field incidents the 49ers are dealing with this season. Chris Culliver, an important part of the 49ers revamped secondary, will soon be charged for a recent hit and run incident. The 49ers are likely to hold onto Culliver, who will play a major role for the team due to the loss of multiple cornerbacks in free agency. This past week quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s name came up in relation to a “suspicious incident” that Miami police are still investigating. It’s unknown whether or not Kaepernick will be charged with anything, but any potential drama around Kaepernick will be yet another distraction for the franchise. It’s been an eventful offseason, beginning with rumors that the team actually looked to trade Head Coach Jim Harbaugh to the Cleveland Browns. The Harbaugh story was followed by a tough free agency period where more of the 49ers impressive defensive depth was picked apart by NFL free agency.

Aldon Smith

ALDON SMITH

The potential loss of Smith may be a major blow to the 49ers pass rush. Smith forms a tremendous combination with defensive end Justin Smith. Couple the loss of Aldon Smith with the devastating knee injury that NaVorro Bowman is returning from and the 49ers linebacker corps is clearly diminished. Bowman is a unique player, an every down player, who will likely be replaced by a handful of players as well as changes in scheme. With the 49ers secondary rebuilding, including new safety Antoine Bethea, a solid pass rush will be important. Corey Lemonair, who showed flashes of brilliance in his rookie season, is the logical replacement for Smith. San Francisco also has a massive number of draft picks in the upcoming NFL draft, with ample opportunity to pick up potential pass rush talent.

Whether or not they can find a player who can average a sack a game, like Smith, is another story. In an offseason where they were forced to replace exiting talent at several positions, the distraction of another Smith incident is exactly what the 49ers didn’t need. With Seattle coming off of a Super Bowl title the 49ers will need their typical elite defense. If they are unable to make up for their losses on the defensive side of the football they could be looking at another wild card run next season. By Chris Cabrera

Blake Griffin and Joakim Noah the two top black horses for the MVP award

Clippers Blake Griffin Bulls Joakim Noah

BLAKE & JOAKIM

There is no denying that the MVP title is a two-man one this year. LeBron James and Kevin Durant will be apparently fighting chest to chest till the end of the season for the award and at the moment, things look really tight. However, it’s worth taking a look at some of the black horses of this race. Although several players have been involved into the discussion for the MVP award this season, at the moment, Blake Griffin and Joakim Noah are the two best underdogs.

Noah is the main reason the Chicago Bulls have managed not only to save the 2013-2014 season but to also emerge up to the third spot in the Eastern Conference. The Frenchman center is doing it all for his team at the moment, playing defense, scoring, dishing assists and rebounding. Although Noah has literally no chances to make it to the top of list of MVP candidates, as LeBron and KD are playing in a whole different level, he is one of the most over performing players this season.

LA Clippers Blake Griffin

BLAKE

If there is one player who deserves to be considered as a third strong candidate for the MVP award this season, that is Blake Griffin. The highflying forward has not only improved his game in almost any aspect but he has also emerged as the true leader of the Los Angeles Clippers, taking the team on his shoulders during the time Chris Paul was out with an injury.

Griffin is averaging 24 points per contest, almost three more than his career-average and he is also securing 9.6 rebounds and dishing out 3.6 assists, while shooting 53.2 percent from the floor. He just recently got hurt, during the Clips’ last game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, but he is projected to return to action soon and be ready for the Clips’ playoff push. Despite Griffin’s improvement, he will still not be able to reach the duo of LeBron and Durant.

LeBron is recording a career-best 57.0 percent shooting from the field and he is also putting up 26.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game, which are too much for Griffin to get close. Durant is also recording similarly impressive numbers, maybe even more impressive. He is leading the NBA in scoring with 32.2 points per game and he is also putting up 7.5 rebounds and 5.7 assists. His shooting is also great but slightly lower than LeBron’s rates, 51.2 percent from the floor and 41.2 percent from deep.
The MVP race will be coming to its end soon and we will see either Durant or LeBron earning the crown. However, we also have to recognize the efforts of players like Griffin and Noah. Chris M

Another song from Lorde, this time in the Top 10 and moving up from last week’s Top 5.
3. Counting Stars – One Republic
One Republic is still a crowd favorite with their track remaining at number 3.

Holding fast in Top 2 is “Timber”. We’ll see how strong this song can cling to its spot. (Or how it can potentially rank first.)
1. The Monster – Eminem feat. Rihanna
Starting the year right, still at the top spot is Eminem’s “The Monster”, from the practically legendary Eminem. Rumor Mill has it that Eminiem will be playing a limited number of concerts in the United States and Europe in the end of 2014. By:Dani Kelly.

Yes Virgina The Trail Blazers Are Championship Contenders

Portland Trail Blazers

Trail Blazers

This season in the NBA we are seeing some teams struggling to play up to the expectations every fan had for them, like the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets. However, there is also a team that is playing surprisingly well and that’s no other than the Portland Trail Blazers. Portland is up to a 19-4 start in the season and it currently sits atop of the Western Conference. The Blazers have been really impressive up to now but can they really be considered as a title contender?

During the first month of the season it’s true that Portland had an easy schedule. They didn’t play against the best teams in the league. After a 13-3 start, lots of discussions around the NBA pointed out that the Blazers played only against weak opponents. Now, after a month and a half into the season and after beating teams like the Indiana Pacers, the Houston Rockets and the Oklahoma City Thunder in the month of December, it’s time to face the reality. Portland are one of the best teams in the league. At least they are playing like one and they will be contending for the Larry O’Brien trophy.

Damian Lillard is continuing to improve his performance, after winning the Rookie of the Year award last season. He is scoring 19.3 points per contest, dishing out 5.6 assists and grabbing 3.7 rebounds per game this season. His shooting percentages are decent, too, 39.7 percent from the floor and 41.3 percent from three-point territory. Where the 23-year old point guard makes an impact for the Blazers is defense. Lillard has found the way to use the strengths of his teammates when defending the pick-and-roll.
Of course, the presence of LaMarcus Aldridge is also one of the main reasons Portland has found that much success this season. Aldridge can be fairly considered as one of the best power forwards in the NBA this season. He is leading Portland in scoring with 23.5 points per contest. He is also averaging 10.6 boards per contest and shooting 48.1 percent from the field.

Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews are also playing vital roles in the team’s success up to now, averaging 13.6 and 16.3 per contest respectively. Mo Williams, Thomas Robinson and Robin Lopez deliver with consistency, while Portland is playing without its rookie and 10th pick of this year’s draft, C.J. McCollum.

It seems like Head Coach Terry Stotts is utilizing the strengths of each member of the team. Not only Portland has turned into a scoring machine this season, ranking second in the league with 106.4 points but they are also doing really well on offense. The Blazers sit at the 16th spot in the NBA in points allowed. However, the defensive system they are playing well has some principles that might prove out to be crucial during the postseason. The Blazers are forcing low-percentage mid-range shots from their opponents, while closing down perfectly on perimeter shooters and securing the paint.
The fact that with a month and a half after the start of the season the Blazers stand above teams-dynasties in the tough Western Conference, like the Oklahoma City Thunder, the San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets is impressive. They should not be underestimated when it comes to championship contention.

Carmelo a Los Angeles Laker in 2014?

Carmelo a Lakers

“Mello”

The recent news from Carmelo Anthony are not the best possible for New York Knicks fans. In fact, they could trigger some worries for the Knicks organization. Superstar Carmelo Anthony recently stated that he would like test free-agency next season this summer.

The megastar forward is will have the option to opt-out of his contract after the end of the upcoming season. At the moment, the rumor mill about his next team-destination is revolving and the discussions got even more intense after his recent statements. A potential signing with the Los Angeles Lakers was and still is in the center of the discussions. There is also a dream scenario that would bring Melo together with LeBron James in the City of Angeles. This would form a dynasty in LA and as long as Kobe Bryant will be able to play, he would act as the linking bond between the two eras. This of course is a scenario every Lakers fan can dream with but is not so easy to come to reality. On the contrary, the possibilities Carmelo leaves New York shouldn’t be neglected.

Certainly Anthony still remains focused on winning a championship with the Knicks this season. During the 2013-2014 campaign and the course of the Knicks team will certainly play a role in Carmelo’s future with New York. A tempting contract could of course assist in his re-signing, but it’s not the first and last thing the 29-year old forward is thinking of. If he decides to opt-out there still many chances he doesn’t leave New York. How?

Well, that’s exactly what happened with J.R. Smith this summer, when he opted out his contract only to re-sign a better contract with the Knicks a few weeks later. Carmelo might follow the same way to secure a maximum length on his contract. At least for now, New York’s fans should not be alerted.

The Knicks do stand good odds for the championship season. The team has to finally try and be effective in the playoffs, unlike all the previous years. They have the talent to support such a course. Certainly, they will need to get the most out of each player and that’s a grey point.
Can Amar’e Stoudemire stay healthy this season? Will he be able to play big minutes and retain a high level of performance? Or will be battle through injuries once again? What about J.R. Smith? Will he get back to his superb performance of the previous season after the injury?
Those concerns are really major for Mike Woodson and the Knicks this season. The answers of those questions will be played in the courts of the NBA this season and could be a determining factor to whether Melo stays or not.

The 2014 summer free-agency will definitely one of the most interesting of the past years as some of the biggest superstars will hit the free-agency and there is no clear indication about what their future will be. The moves from other star players could also affect Anthony’s decision. Until, then the main focus for him and the Knicks is the upcoming season.

Could the Clippers beat the Spurs in the Playoffs?

Chris Paul LA Clippers

Chris Paul LA Clippers

It was a close one last night for the Clippers. It was a game that was decided in the last seconds or maybe wasn’t it? The fact is that LA suffered another loss against a top-4 team in the Western Conference. The final score wrote 104-102. Tim Duncan made a clutch 3-point play to give the Spurs the lead with about two seconds left in the game. However, can we be sure that this was the moment the game was decided?

With about two weeks left in the regular season, it has been clear for the Clips, that in order to win teams of the caliber of the Spurs, the Thunder or the Nuggets, they will need to fix the details in their game. Those small details can make the difference between a Champion and a Championship Contender. The Spurs are surely in the first category. As for LA, we’ll have to sit back and anticipate their bestperformance in the Playoffs.

San Antonio is a team that has cruised in the first spots of the Western Conference for the past years. It’s really incredible to see a team that won the NBA Championship 6 years ago to still conquer its entire Conference and have great chances to chase the title once again. The most interesting fact is that the Spurs have retained their roster core since that time. Despite their aging players, they still are red hot while on court. Of course, the guidance of Gregg Popovic has been a major factor for the team’s success through the years.

As for LA, they will have to make things happen now. There are no excuses. In two weeks, the story will be “win or go home”. And if you go home, you’ll have to wait awhole year to even have a shot for a Championship again.Vinnie Del Negro’s team will possibly face the Spurs during the 2nd leg, if they finish in the 3rd seed and the Spurs remain 1st. Alternatively, if LA finishes fourth, then the only possibility to play against San Antonio would be in the Western Conference Finals.

No matter which will be the opponent, the Clippers will have to fix some serious issues if they want to increase their chances for a better run. One problem that was exposed during their matchup against the Spurs was free-throw shooting. One can clearly see the difference: The Spurs shot at 95.2% from the charity stripe, 20-21. The Clippers went for a disappointing 57.1%. The team’s starting center, DeAndre Jordan hit in just one of his eight attempts. Griffin went 4 out of 5, but this could be circumstantial. That’s a difference between a Champion and a contender. Defense is another sector of LA’s game that has to be fixed, especially against three-pointers. They are trying to improve in that category, but when the Playoffs start there will be no more time for experiments.Clutch plays can also make the difference. There has to be a consistent option, a player that can set plays without committing turnovers and score easily when the ball weights 10 times more than normal, with the game on the line.

At the moment, one could say that the Clippers don’t seem to have the force to eliminate the Spurs in a 7-game stretch. Of course, things can turn upside down till the time they meet again.
