Are you ready for some football? On a Wednesday?
We’ve just started the long, dark time of year called the “offseason.”
Some good news arrived Tuesday, delivered straight from the NFL Mountaintops: The offseason will be one day shorter than expected.
The New York Giants will host the season opener on Wednesday, September 5. The game was moved a day earlier than usual in deference to President Barack Obama’s Thursday speech at the Democratic National Convention.
So on Tuesday, the NFL decided to simply move the game to the previous night, Wednesday, September 5. It will be the first time since the fall of 1948 that a regular season NFL game would be played on a Wednesday. On that day, September 22, 1948, to be precise, the Detroit Lions lost to the Los Angeles Rams, en route to a 2-10 season; the Rams finished 6-5-1. (In case you’re wondering, the Philadelphia Eagles won the championship that year.)
This will be the second time in three years that a regular season NFL game will be played on an unorthodox day of the week. In late December 2010, a Sunday afternoon game involving the aforementioned Eagles was moved to Tuesday night due to extreme blizzard conditions in Philadelphia. The visiting Vikings – playing out the string a la the Asheville Tourists after a blizzard back home impounded the Metrodome – won the game behind the unlikely arm of Joe Webb.
The Giants’ first opponents of the 2012-13 season is still to be determined. In 2008, the Giants beat the Washington Redskins in the season opener. With politics once again coming into play in the Giants’ defense of their Lombardi trophy, don’t be surprised if the Giants once again square off against Washington on September 5; the start time will remain 8:30 PM ET. (The two teams have actually faced each other on the season opener for the last two years.)
And in case you’re wondering: no, the Giants don’t play the Chicago Bears this season, so that was not a factor in moving up the season opener to Wednesday to accommodate big-time Bears fan President Obama the following night. The Packers, Saints, and Steelers are strong candidates.
The Super Bowl champion New York Giants will host the season-opener at MetLife Stadium against a team to be announced at a later date. Starting time is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.

USC Trojans 2012 Backetball Preview
Every college basketball season has its sensational plays, but some of those plays transcend their own time to become the defining moments of the sport. These are the kinds of plays that get rehearsed in highlight compilations every March, the pantheon of college hoops accomplishments.
Sometimes people forget USC even has a men’s basketball team with all the commotion that surrounds its football team.
However, this year’s team looks to contend and compete in the Pac-12 despite injuries to a few key players. Here are five predictions that definitely have the potential to come true. The Men of Troy are a young and talented group of individuals who have fans and students excited about the future. Although not known as a basketball school, USC has attracted some talent that will immediately impact the season and the direction of the program.
After winning nineteen games this past season, it is needless to say that the Trojans will try and better their record this upcoming season.
Although the Pac-12 is as competitive as it gets, USC is faced with a favorable schedule.
There is no reason why they should not start off 5-0, with their only true test being an away game at San Diego State. This will give them a good basis and jump-start for the rest of the season as the young team builds their confidence. It seems as though USC has had trouble the past few years breaking the 20-win mark, but I believe they are poised for a breakout season.
Dewayne Dedmon will play a key part in both games with his tall frame and athleticism against an undersized and slower Bruins team.
Both games will create tough matchup problems for both teams and fans should be in for a treat, but do not think UCLA is going to walk all over the Trojans this year. As a matter of fact, it should be like this for years to come.
Ranked California’s top player by Cali High Sports, Byron Wesley will get the start for the Trojans at small forward this year.
Standing at a solid 6’5″, Wesley knows how to use his body and finish at the rim. Due to the injury of veteran guard Jio Fontan, Wesley will immediately be looked to for scoring by both Coach O’Neill and his teammates.
He is a very versatile player who can play almost any position on the floor and is used to playing in the spotlight. With a polished mid-range game, he can score in a variety of different ways and will surely be a tough cover.
Wesley is not afraid to get inside and rebound, and never runs away from a tough defensive battle. His talent will be recognized sooner rather than later.
This year the Kansas Jayhawks will pay the Trojans a visit. Entering the season ranked No. 13, they should beware when they come to play USC.
The players will really be focused and recogonzie what a win could do for their season. The game is during winter break and although people may think this does not mean anything, it does.
Players will have family in the stands, so they will be more pumped-up than usual and ready to take down Kansas Jayhawks.
If all the previous predictions come true, it only makes sense that USC will have their time during March Madness.
Although they lost in the first round last year and have lost one of their key players, it is clear that the team possesses some new and young talent.
USC men’s basketball often times flies under the radar due to the football team’s prestige. Look for them to put some people on notice this year.

KINGS Vs WILD Backup Jonathan Bernier turned aside 26 shots for his first shutout of the season to lift visiting Los Angeles over Minnesota.
Justin Williams and Anze Kopitar had a goal and an assist apiece to help the Kings climb into a tie with Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche for the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference.
Dwight King and Alec Martinez also tallied and Dustin Brown and Matt Greene contributed two assists apiece as Los Angeles won for only the second time in seven games.
Bernier had 10 saves in each of the first two periods en route to his fifth career shutout and second against Minnesota.
Williams triggered a three-goal first period when a shot by Slava Voynov deflected off his body and past Niklas Backstrom only 44 seconds into the game.
King doubled the lead by redirecting a centering pass from Kopitar nine minutes later, and Kopitar ended a nine-game goalless drought by tapping a shot into an open net with 1:22 left in the period.
Martinez supplied the only goal of the second period to give Los Angeles a commanding 4-0 lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Kings, who entered with a league-low 130 goals, had been limited to one goal or fewer in eight of the previous 12 games. The four-goal outburst allowed them to surpass the Wild, who came in with 133 goals. … Bernier won for the first time since Jan. 9. It was only his second start since that victory. He also blanked the Wild in Minnesota on Feb. 1, 2011.

Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Los Angeles Clippers

Analysis of the Minnesota Timberwolves
While their opponents on Tuesday night may have something to say about it, the Timberwolves have gone from a team few cared about to arguably the most fun team to watch in the NBA. After only winning 17 games last year (in a full 82 game season), the T-Wolves matched their win total in just the first half of this season going 17-17 and staying in the playoff hunt out west. The combination of PF Kevin Love and rookie PG Ricky Rubio seems to be the spark this young squad needed to become relevant again.
Analysis of the Los Angeles Clippers
As good a PG/PF combo Rubio and Love are, the Clippers have them beat with All-Stars Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. The two have put on a show this season combining for 40 points per game on average leading their squad to a 20-11 record in the first part of the season. Currently they’re sitting in the 3rd seed in the Western Conference and will have to at least match their performance during the first half of 2012 in order to keep that seed or possibly move up, something that won’t be easy in the same division as the rival Lakers.
Key Players
Timberwolves: PF Kevin Love
Love is the star of this team, though he doesn’t make very much noise about it. The young power forward is 4th in the NBA in points per game (25) and 2nd in rebounds (14), making him one of the most effective player sin the game. A tough matchup against Griffin awaits, but Griffin’s focus on offense over defense may be enough for Love to put up a dominating performance
Clippers: PG Chris Paul
Paul is the field general for the Clippers and is responsible for the nightly performance of his team. He’ll get a favorable matchup (as he always does) against Rubio, but that doesn’t mean the night will be his. Rubio is in the top 5 in assists and steals in the NBA (just as Paul is) so a night off for Paul will absolutely mean a loss for the Clips.
Key Statistics
Turnovers:
The Clippers are a decent team in preventing turnovers, only averaging 14.2 each game (6th in the league). The T-Wolves average 16.2 per game though, 28th in the league. Those 2 turnovers may be the ~5 points that down the Timberwolves in LA, so stopping that from happening will have to be a priority for them.
Prediction
When these two met in Los Angeles earlier this season Love hit a 3-pointer with no time left to push the Timberwolves to a big win in OT. You have to feel that coming off of the All-Star break both teams will be little rusty but that the Clippers will have the edge due to their depth and talent advantage. The Timberwolves already proved they can beat these guys, but 2 wins against the Clippers in LA is probably 1 too much for this season.
Prediction = Los Angeles Clippers: 95 – Minnesota Timberwolves: 88

Kobe Bryant got the scoring record, Kevin Durant the MVP, and the West got the win – barely.
Oklahoma City Thunder Kevin Durant scored 36 points to lead the Western Conference All-Stars to a 152-149 victory against the Eastern Conference All-Stars in the 2012 NBA All-Star Game on Sunday night, earning MVP honors in the process. The game proved to be about as dramatic as one without any lead-changes can be, as the East rallied from a deficit that reached as many as 20 points in the final period to draw to within one point twice in the final two minutes, only to come up short. LeBron James had 36 points, six rebounds, and seven assists for the East, while Miami Heat teammate Dwyane Wade posted a 24-point, 10-rebound, 10-assist triple-double.
James and Deron Williams helped lead the East’s comeback effort as each hit a pair of three-pointers in the final period. Williams ignited the Amway Center crowd by stealing a Durant inbounds pass under the basket and laying the ball in to bring the East to within a point. After forcing a LA Lakers Kobe Bryant miss, the East had a chance to claim its first lead of the game on a fast break, but Wade lost the ball out of bounds on what should have been an easy layup attempt.
And, in a twist that’ll be debated throughout the media in the days ahead, James turned the ball over with two seconds left and his team trailing by two points. Williams’ go-ahead three-point try missed the mark, but New York Knicks Carmelo Anthony made an impressive back-tap to keep the ball alive for the East. James recovered the ball, but fumbled it away before the East could call timeout or get anything going. It was the 19th turnover of the night for the host conference, which was one of the factors that contributed to its defeat: the West scored 30 points off the East’s turnovers.
The game got off to a horrid start, with the East somehow managing to shoot 43.3 percent in the first period of an All-Star Game. The silliness progressed from there, as one might expect, given the low-intensity, low-stakes nature of the event. The West’s 88 first-half points set a new record for All-Star scoring in a half, which is as good an indicator of the quality of play through the first 24 minutes as any.
But in the third quarter, the game turned and all the players on both sides seemed to wake up. James hit three three-pointers in the first three minutes after halftime, helping the East cut the West’s lead from 21 to 12. Wade’s hard foul of a driving Bryant at the 8:48 mark–it drew blood! in an All-Star Game!–signaled the East meant business, and would not be content to let the West continue to pile up the points. Bryant declined to address the media after the game due to a headache he suffered on that foul.
Durant had plenty of help in leading the West to its second consecutive victory. Bryant scored 27, though he shot just 4-of-11 after the first period, while Russell Westbrook scored 21 points in 28 minutes off the bench, giving the East fits with his speed and leaping ability. Kevin Love scored eight of his quiet 17 points in the fourth quarter to help the West hold off the East.
Conclusion:
In all, the players rewarded the City of Orlando with an All-Star Game for the ages, despite the low-energy first half. Several records fell: Bryant passed Michael Jordan on the career All-Star scoring list; the East made 14 three-pointers; the teams combined for 301 points; Wade tallied the third triple-double in All-Star history; and Durant and James nearly broke Wilt Chamberlain’s record for single-game All-Star scoring (42 points).

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim is a team with a lot of outstanding players. One of these players is LaTroy Hawkins.
LaTroy Hawkins is a 6 feet five inch relief pitcher who is a right-handed thrower and also a right-handed hitter. He used to play baseball when he was in high school in Westside Gary, Indiana. It was in 1991 when he was drafted in the 7th round by the team of Twins in the amateur draft. He signed with the team on June 7, 1991. By then, he has his next four years playing in the team’s minor league system. In April 29, 1995, he has his first appearance in the Major League Baseball and it was challenging for him as the team faced the team of Orioles. However, over the next few years, LaTroy Hawkins was able to bounce between the big league club and Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League, finally landing in his team’s bullpen permanently in 1998. And he was the opposing starting pitcher in the perfect game by Yankees pitcher David Wells on May of 1998.
LaTroy Hawkins of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim was born on December 21, 1972 in Gary, Inidana. After eight seasons with the Minnesota Twins, LaTroy Hawkins moved to the teams of Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Colorado Rockies, New York Yankees, Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers before joining the team of Angels of Anaheim. It was one of the great career opportunities for Hawkins. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and veteran reliever Hawkins agreed to a one-year deal worth three million dollars in December 2011. He was 39 years of age then when he signed with the team of Angels of Anaheim, entering his 18th Major League season. His past two years was spent with the Brewers, posting a 2.42 ERA in 52 appearances in 2011 becoming a key figure in the team’s runaway division title in the National League Central.
LaTroy Hawkins continues to flourish with the Angels of Anaheim. In fact, this right-hander pitcher spends his time in the camp with the team of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim which is his ninth team in ten glorious years. According to LaTroy Hawkins, joining and spending time with the Angels of Anaheim team is really fun among all of his stops along the way in his journey in the world of Major League Baseball. In addition to this he also stated that he is moving around the game, he’s playing with the greatest players in the world, and what excites him the most is the fact that he is almost forty years of age and playing a kid’s sport, anyone can’t beat that according to him.  John Hellweg Angels John Hellweg was born on October 29, 1988, in O’Fallon, Missouri, USA. He is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. In 2007 First year Hellweg was drafted in 46th round of the 2007 MLB June Amateur Draft by the Miami Marlins of the Florida Community College in Jacksonville, Florida. With his potential the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim drafted him on the 16th round (499th overall) of the 2008 MLB June Amateur Draft.
Standing 6 foot 9 inches tall, Hellweg was one of the tallest players in the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 40 man roster. The Angels believe that he will soon become one of the top players of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He is playing for the Minor League Baseball (MiLB) in 2008 and 2009 under AZL Angels of the Arizona League. With his efforts the Angels continue to craft his talent and he played in 2009 to 2010 under the Cedar Rapids Kernels team of the Midwest League. Hellweg was then advance and in 2011 he plays for the Inland Empire 66ers of the California League. With his first 3 years in the organization Hellweg continue to excel in his career, the Angels of Anaheim wanted to work him to make him reach his full potential as a great result when he joined in the California League.
The improvement of Hellweg was because of his dedication and with the help of his team he keeps on gaining experience and develops his pitching skills. His walk rate is getting better and better and enhances his groundball rate up. Hellweg could be a frontline starter for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and is now attracting national attention. We could expect another future star from John Hellweg that can impress the crowds on the Major League Baseball (MLB). The Angels still trains him and we could expect a rising baseball star in the future.
