NHL Pacific Division Preview

January 18th, 2013
NHL Pacific Division

NHL Pacific Division

1. LA Kings: For the first time ever a returning Stanley Cup champion brings back their entire roster from the season before. On top of that they do so with the lockout giving them several extra months of rest. The Pacific Division is the Kings to lose. There are a couple of question marks early, the biggest being the health of Anze Kopitar. It was Kopitar’s evolution from standout to superstar in last year’s playoff (along with Jonathon Quick of course) that propelled the Kings to the Stanley Cup. With a deep group of forwards, strong goaltending and an elite lead defenseman in Drew Doughty the Kings are the odd-on favorites to win the Pacific and contend for the top overall record in the Western Conference.

2. Phoenix Coyotes: With all the excitement over the defending champion Kings last year’s division champs aren’t getting a ton of attention. The Coyotes aggressive style may not be exciting from a hockey purist standpoint, but they are deep and well coached and there’s no reason why the Coyotes can’t defend their division title. The big question mark across the board in the NHL is how teams will be affected by the lockout, good or bad. There are a few factors in the Coyotes favor. First, they had ten players actively playing during the lockout. Second, they have a number one goaltender in Mike Smith who had a massive workload last season. The extended offseason should benefit Smith. Like any small market team the Coyotes have to make tough financial decisions and it had to be hard to see Ray Whitney go to a division rival. Still, the Coyotes have done well to build from within and have kept the core of their roster. They’ll have to find a way to replace Whitney’s production offensively, but the addition of Zbynek Michalek will make a tough defense even tougher. The Coyotes will challenge the Kings until the end.

3. San Jose Sharks: The proverbial window of opportunity is probably closing in San Jose. After making deep playoff runs for consecutive years the Sharks fell back to seventh in the Western Conference last season, getting dismantled by the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the playoffs. After years of consistent success last year had to be a disappointment for the Sharks. They still have a roster of capable veterans. Up front the Sharks still boast one of the deepest groups of forwards in the NHL and the likes of Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski, Patrick Marleau, Martin Havlat and young Logan Couture surely are capable of propelling the Sharks back to the top. Defensively the Sharks brought back Brad Stuart who’ll anchor the second defensive pairing behind the excellent top unit of Dan Boyle and Brent Burns. Antti Niemi should once again provide steady goaltending. Like the two teams projected above the Sharks have had very little turnover which bodes well for a quick start. If the Sharks can get out of the gates quickly and if the brutal schedule doesn’t wear down the aging forward group the Sharks could very well make a run. Unfortunately they have the feel of a team battling for a final playoff spot.

4. Anaheim Ducks: When it comes to the Ducks, who really knows? They were brutal at the beginning of the year under Randy Carlyle then got hot right after they hired Bruce Boudreau, only to come back to earth. It all comes down to the first line. If Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan play like they did the year before last they can absolutely carry a team. If they continue to struggle and Getzlaf continues to be an enigma trade deadline moves may be in the offing. It’s a pivotal year in Anaheim. The Ducks are a high potential club but past the first line there isn’t a ton of depth. If the top line goes nuts they could contend, but that’s difficult to see considering the evolution of Phoenix and LA as elite teams. The Kings, Coyotes and Sharks are simply deeper and better.

5. Dallas Stars: The Stars head into the season with an interesting strategy, an almost anti-youth movement. In picking up Jaromir Jagr, Ray Whitney and Derek Roy and Stars have clearly gotten older, but they’ve also added some real veteran presence to the club. As noted before there’s really no telling how the short season will play out. On one hand the lack of a full regular season can be a boon to aging legs. On the other hand the back to back games and five games in seven days stretches might now. One positive is that Joe Nieuwendyk is clearly making moves to add a little excitement in Big D. We’ll see how quickly they can build chemistry. Even with the addition of the grizzled vets the Stars are a playoff long shot.

Biggest game for LA Kings since 1993

May 20th, 2012

The eighth-seeded Los Angeles Kings will try to earn their first Stanley Cup Finals berth since 1993 when they host the Phoenix Coyotes today in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals.

The Los Angeles Kings have crafted one of the most dominant playoff performances in recent memory, leaving them a win away from reaching the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in 19 years. They’ll get their first crack at it Sunday afternoon as they entertain the Phoenix Coyotes in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals. A capacity crowd is expected at the Staples Center, which has already seen plenty of playoff action this weekend and could be the site of the Kings’ biggest win since 1993.

Given the way Los Angeles has played this postseason, it’s easy to forget that the club came into the Stanley Cup tournament as the eighth seed in the West. And yet, despite having to tangle with the top three teams in the conference, the Kings are just the third team in NHL history to take 3-0 leads in each of its first three series. Los Angeles failed to close out Vancouver at home, dropping Game 4 of its first-round series for its only loss of the playoffs. The Kings used home-ice to beat the St. Louis Blues in the fourth game of round two and will look to do the same against the Coyotes.

Little has gone right for Phoenix in the conference finals. After coming in on a high following a five-game elimination of the Nashville Predators, the Coyotes‘ vaunted defense has been overmatched by a deep, speedy Kings roster that has generated 116 shots through the first three games of the series. Coach Dave Tippett noted that his club took several penalties in the third period of Game 3 that perhaps shouldn’t have been called. “The game is turning a little dishonest and it’s embellishment by players,” Tippett said. “When it’s done well, it’s very hard for the referees, very hard

Western Conference Kings and Coyotes Square off

May 12th, 2012
Kings Vs Coyotes

Kings Vs Coyotes

The NHL has quite a surprise on their hands with the Western Conference Finals as it features 2 teams nobody really expected to be here several months ago. Your two teams are the 8th seeded Los Angeles Kings and the 3 seeded Phoenix Coyotes.

Entering the post season the Kings finished only 2 points behind the Coyotes but thanks to league rules that state a division winner gets a top 3 seed, the Coyotes leapfrogged over several teams with more total points and were able to earn home ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs.

The Kings lost their final 2 games of the regular season to the San Jose Sharks knocking them down into the 8th seed and giving them the task of having to knock off the top seeded Vancouver Canucks to advance to the second round.

The Kings started the playoffs red hot as they took the first 3 games of the series from the Canucks to take a 3-0 series lead. In game 4 however, the Kings stumbled as they lost to the Canucks to make the series 3-1. In game 4 the Kings were able to rebound thanks to a Jarret Stoll overtime goal which gave the Kings the series victory over the Canucks and propelled them to the second round to take on the second seeded St. Louis Blues.

Just like in the first round, the Kings had to open the series on the road and once again won both games on the opponents ice sending them back to L.A. with a 2 games to none lead. In game 3 the Kings were able to excite the home crowd as they won again, this time by a score of 4-2 to take a 3-0 series lead for the second straight round. Unlike in round 1 where the Kings were unable to close out the series on home ice, the Kings were able to defeat the Blues 2-1 in game 4 to send the Staples Center crowd into euphoria and advancing the Kings into the third round of the playoffs and a date with the Phoenix Coyotes.

During the regular season these 2 teams split the series at 3 games a-piece with the most recent game being a 5-4 shootout victory for the Coyotes back on February 21st.

Both of the goaltenders in this upcoming series have been red hot during the postseason as Jonathan Quick leads all active goalies in playoff GAA right now with a 1.55 GAA and .949 save percentage while Mike Smith has been almost as good sporting a 1.85 GAA with a save percentage of .946.

While it is expected that this series will be low scoring, it needs to be pointed out that the Kings are averaging 3 goals per game in the playoffs while the Coyotes are averaging 2.64 goals per game, so a high scoring game is not entirely out of the question. With the stellar goaltending however it would not be surprising at all to see one game end 1-0 and the following game be a 5-4 finale.

As of now it is unknown when the series will start, but you can bet that it will be an exciting matchup and ultimately will send a team from the Pacific Division to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 2007 when the Anaheim Ducks represented the Pacific Division en route to their Stanley Cup victory

Los Angeles Kings 2012 Playoffs?

April 2nd, 2012

With 5 games remaining in the regular season for the Los Angeles Kings, the playoff race is as tight as ever and every point is incredibly valuable. Right now the race in the Pacific division for the division crown is between 4 different teams. The Dallas Stars with 89 points, the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks with 88 points, and the Phoenix Coyotes with 87 points. Currently it appears 3 of these 4 teams will make the playoffs with 1 of them earning the 3 seed and home ice advantage in the first round thanks to winning the division.

The Kings have a very favorable schedule in the home stretch as they face cellar dwellers Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild, and Edmonton again before taking on the Sharks in their final 2 games of the season. The Sharks will finish off the season playing only division rivals as they will face the Phoenix Coyotes once and Dallas Stars and Los Angeles Kings twice which should help create some parity in points in the division. The Dallas Stars have a very tough schedule as they will face division leaders Vancouver and St. Louis before the season ends and Phoenix also has to face the St. Louis Blues once before the season ends. The Kings definitely do have the schedule on their side to close out the season and should be able to make it into the playoffs. The question is will it be as a 3, 7, or 8 seed. If the Kings miss out on the playoffs however, they will nobody to blame but themselves.

Barrys Tickets will have Kings Tickets for all 2012 Kings Playoff Games for both home and away games.

Coyotes 5 Kings 4

February 22nd, 2012

COYOTES 5, KINGS 4 (SO): Ray Whitney and Mikkel Boedker scored in the shootout as host Phoenix overcame a 3-0 deficit to move into a first-place tie with the San Jose Sharks.

Whitney opened the shootout with a goal and Dustin Brown briefly leveled it in the second round. Boedker then used a backhand to beat Jonathan Quick before Jack Johnson’s attempt sailed wide right.

Radim Vrbata had two goals and an assist and Shane Doan scored twice to help Phoenix win its sixth in a row at home and improve to 8-0-1 overall in February.

Vrbata leveled the score with 2:27 left in regulation on the Coyotes’ third power-play goal of the night with his team-best 30th of the season. Vrbata has seven goals and five assists his past nine games.

The scoring-challenged Kings, who were coming off back-to-back shutouts, exploded for three goals in the first 15 minutes. Drew Doughty, Andrei Loktionov and Brown all got in the scoring act against goaltender Mike Smith.

The Coyotes clawed their way back in the second, taking advantage of penalties for a pair of power-play goals. Vrbata scored 50 seconds into the frame and Doan followed suit five minutes later with a wrist shot from close range to cut it to 3-2.

Williams converted a power-play tally of his own midway through the second before Doan was at it again, scoring from nearly the same spot to make it a one-goal contest.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Kings forward Jarret Stoll returned to the lineup after missing four games with a lower-body injury. … Los Angeles forward Kyle Clifford was sent to the locker room with a five-minute major for crosschecking Keith Yandle midway through the third, leading to Vrbata’s tying goal. … Smith is unbeaten in his last eight starts.

The Los Angeles Kings will face the Chicago Blackhawks on Sat Jan 25th at the Staples Center. Tickets for the Blackhawks Vs Kings are onsale now.

THE STORY: Failing to score has been a reoccurring issue this season for the Los  Angeles Kings. Their recent rut has dropped them out the top eight spots in the Western Conference. The Kings get an opportunity to make up some ground on one of the teams they’re chasing when they travel to face the streaking Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday. Los Angeles is 3-1-1 in five  meetings this season, but Phoenix is unbeaten in five straight at home.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS West (Kings), FS Arizona Plus (Coyotes)

ABOUT THE KINGS (27-21-11):
It’s easy to see why the Kings have only two wins in their past eight games. They have managed three goals in  the six losses, including shutouts their two previous games. “The last  couple years, we’ve been battling for a playoff spot,” captain Dustin  Brown said. “As frustrating as these last two games have been,  offensively, we’ve got to refocus.” Goaltender Jonathan Quick has done  his part against the Coyotes, stopping 42 of 43 shots in the last two  meetings.

ABOUT THE COYOTES (29-21-9): While the Kings are headed in the wrong direction, the Coyotes are on an uptick, going  7-0-1 in February. Phoenix has grabbed 17 of a possible 20 points coming in, the main reason the club has jumped to seventh in the West – two  points in front of Calgary and Los Angeles. Forward Radim Vrbata has  been red-hot. He has five goals and four assists the past eight games,  including four game-winners, en route to a career-best 28 tallies.

OVERTIME:

1. Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith is unbeaten in his last seven starts while posting a minuscule 0.99 goals against average.

2. The Kings average 2.03 goals, last in the NHL.

PREDICTION: Coyotes 3, Kings 2 (OT)

Phoenix 1 Coyotes – Los Angeles Kings 0 Staples Center

February 17th, 2012

COYOTES 1, KINGS 0:
Thursday, February 16, 2012 7:30 PM

Mike Smith recorded his second straight shutout by turning aside all 28 shots he faced and Radim Vrbata matched a career high with his 27th goal of the season as the Phoenix Coyotes  edged the Los Angeles Kings in a physical battle at the Staples Center.

With the victory, the Coyotes improved to 7-1-1 in their last nine games and pulled even with the Kings for seventh place in the Western Conference. The pair is just four points behind the Pacific Division-leading San Jose Sharks.

The NHL’s First Star of the Week, Smith responded from his 38-save effort in a shutout of the Chicago Blackhawks by handcuffing the Kings.

Smith secured his fourth blanking of the season and 15th career by stopping 11 shots in the first period, eight in the second and nine in the third. Smith also improved to 7-2-1 in his career versus Los Angeles.

Vrbata finally broke through after Kings defenseman Jack Johnson was serving a delay of game penalty.

With 4:01 left in the second period, Vrbata accepted a cross-ice feed from Ray Whitney and wired a shot from the right faceoff circle past All-Star Jonathan Quick. The tally was Vrbata’s fifth in nine contests.

Quick finished with 20 saves for the Kings, who fell to 2-4-1 in their last seven games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The teams waged a physical battle in the first period, with three fights and two roughing penalties to highlight a scoreless session. … Whitney, who saw his eight-game point streak come to an end in the team’s last contest, had an assist on Vrbata’s goal.
