Review of the Book of Mormon by Matt Wilson

July 11th, 2012

One of my best friends just recently returned from a trip to New York City, and he explained to me that the highlight of his tenure there was going to see a Broadway showing of the Book of Mormon. This anecdote greatly perked my interest, because usually my friend is a rigid critic of most anything he encounters. I hadn’t previously heard much about the musical besides the fact that its creator’s, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, were also the creators of the show South Park. So I decided that the next time I was in the Big Apple I’d have to definitely go see the performance.

After viewing the satire, I can safely say that the Book of Mormon is one of the most worthwhile experiences I’ve had in a long time! It was absolutely one of the most hilarious spectacles I have ever seen. The plot was surprisingly well constructed and it had me totally engaged the entire way through. The musical is a religious satire, so the pious might not be interested. However if you can accept the performance as a light-hearted comedic entertainment, then you should love the Book of Mormon.

The two lead actors were absolutely phenomenal, but truly the entire cast produced a flawless performance. You could really tell that everyone had their parts down impeccably.

My wife and I were positioned to the left side of the theatre, and for the most part we had an excellent view of everything. The theatre wasn’t gigantic, so the intimate atmosphere made the performance that much more lively.

The musical itself describes the tale of two youthful missionaries during their mission to a village in Uganda. When they arrive, they are confronted with realities that they did not expect. The musical details what occurs when the two naïve missionaries encounter these ‘realities’. While this might sound uncomedic, you wouldn’t believe the hilarity that ensues!

I certainly recommend the Book of Mormon to anyone that is looking for a great round of laughs. The story, acting, and entertainment is definitely worthwhile!

The Book of Mormon will be playing at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles from Sept 5th – Nov 25th. We have The Book of Mormon Tickets for all dates of the run.

Review of Book of Mormon the Musical

June 18th, 2012
Book of Mormon

Book of Mormon

Religion is often a very touchy subject to handle. It gets even tougher when you try to do a musical about it. The Book of Mormon somehow made a double win though when it managed to satirize and praise religion at the same time. This being Matt Parker and Trey Stone’s first attempt in making a Broadway musical, I must say it is not bad at all.
If you are not a Mormon, not religious, have a sense of humor, and can laugh at crass jokes then this is definitely a must-watch. For someone who barely had an idea what Mormonism and their doctrines and beliefs are all about I was surprised that it was an educational watch for me too minus the boring lecture hours.

Admittedly the ticket was a bit pricey and obtaining them certainly wasn’t an easy task for me to accomplish but it was definitely worth it. The Book of Mormon wasn’t all about just poking fun at religion. It tells the story of two good-hearted but naïve educators who lands in a foreign land with hardly a clue of what the place was all about and how the people behaved. In the course of their adventure they get to learn valuable lessons while imparting knowledge at the same time, find themselves, and strengthen their values. What I liked best about The Book of Mormon was that it was an original play. It wasn’t based on any movie or famous story allowing me to watch the play in suspense because I had no idea how it will end.

For those who might think it is just another one of those South Park episodes and there won’t be anything new about the plot and story line then you might just be surprised at the end when you’d want to cry from laughter and from some heart-wrenching scenes too.

The Book of Mormon is a play that challenges your beliefs, open your eyes to problems being ignored in our parts of the world, while making you laugh at the silly things people do to keep them sane. The song and dance numbers are quite good. The lyrics of some of the songs will definitely be stuck in your head for a few days and do not be surprised if you catch yourself humming a line or tune, “Hasa Diga Eebowai” would be a good example. The Book of Mormon was not only funny and fun to watch but it was smartly written. Wear an adult diaper when you watch it. You might just thank the gods that you did.

Cathy Rigby is PETER PAN

Peter Pan will be preforming at the Pantages Theater from Jan 15th – Jan 27th 2013! Learn more about Pantages Theater Peter Pan Tickets now.

Peter Pan the Musical is derived from the exciting story brought to children all over the world from the depths of the imagination of 1901 writer J.M. Barrie. Barrie was a popular playwright in his late thirties. One evening at a dinner party Barrie met the Llewelyn’s. The Lleweyn’s had three boys; give year old George, three year old Jack and baby Peter. As Barrie grew to know the Llewelyn’s, each day he walked his St. Bernard Porthos to the Kensington Gardens where the Llewelyn’s would also visit. It wasn’t long before Barrie and the boys grew close and each day looked forward to fun and games in the park. Above all however the Llewelyn boys looked forward to Barrie’s stories.

In 1900 Barries and the boys stayed together at a farmhouse. It was there that the adventures of Peter Pan were born. Filled with pirates, Indians, never land and pixie dust, the story of Peter Pan the Musical has ignited the imaginations of children for over a century and continues to do so today. The magical boy Peter Pan, who never ages and can fly, came to life for its very first in 1904 at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London. For 150 performances Peter Pan nearly sold out. From then on every single year with the exception of 1939 and 1940 Peter Pan the Musical was revived in London. The love and belief behind Peter Pan follows in line with the idea that there is a child in all of us that never wants to grow old. It is a reminder not to let life age you and steal your innocence and sense of adventure. This magical story is now playing at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles, CA.

Peter Pan the Musical follows Peter Pan and his Lost Boys as they conquer mermaids, fairies, and the children and naysayers from outside of Neverland. Memphis The Musical Pantages Theater

Memphis will be preforming at the Pantages Theater from July 31st till Aug 12 2012. You can purchase Memphis the Musical Pantages Theater tickets today for all preformances.

Memphis the Musical is one of the more recent plays to finally hit it big on Broadway! Loosely based on famed Memphis jockey Dewey Philips, this exciting play brings to life the culture and music of Memphis Tennessee in the 1950’s. Dewey Philips was far ahead of his time and a controversy in the fifties. As a white DJ, he was one of the first to play black music. His story is indeed worth hearing. At an underground bar in Memphis, TN, Huey Calhoun walks into the room that is bouncing full of black teens and early twenties dancing the night away. Calhoun’s entrance silences the dance floor but he assures them he is just there for the music. At his day job working at a department store, Huey is on the verge of being fired from the stocking room when he convinces his boss to let him sell five records by playing them over the speakers and then he can have a sales job. After Huey Calhoun plays his Memphis Music he sells nearly thirty records in moments. Incensed however the owner fires Calhoun anyway. Jobless and inspired, Huey applies for a variety of DJ jobs where Mr. Simmons gives him the shot he’s been looking for. Calhoun immediately grabs the mic and plays a black rock song. Callers can’t get enough! Huey’s journey takes new twists and turns when he realizes that as a radio DJ he must know how to read ads. The illiterate Huey Calhoun improvises his first ad ever. Again, almost being fired for the trespass, instead the client paying for the ad requested Calhoun perform all his stores ads.

This is just the beginning of Huey’s story. The beautiful tale of racial lines, passionate Memphis Music, and love that sees no race comes to life in a beautifully portrayed musical. Huey falls in love with Felicia, a black singer with whom he has carried on a two year relationship in secret. Times are simply not ready for such a love. The second half unfolds and we see how Huey and Felicia progress as does the music in Memphis in the 1950’s. Ultimately it is the love for the Music of Memphis that carries the hero and heroine through. Memphis the Musical won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Musical as well as three other Tony’s at the 2010 Tony Awards. Memphis the Musical celebrated its 1000th performance on Broadway on March 14, 2012. This is a huge feat for any musical, especially Memphis the Musical!

Now you can catch Memphis the Musical live in Los Angeles, CA at the Pantages Theater. The Los Angeles Pantages Theater is host to some of the freshest shows hot off of Broadway and Memphis the Musical Pantages Theater Tickets naturally fall into place. La Cage Aux Folles Coming to the the Pantages Theater!

March 28th, 2012

La Cage Aux Folles will be at the Pantages Theater from July 10th – July 22nd, you can puchase Pantages Theater La Cage Aux Folles Tickets today.

La Cage Aux Folles, or The Bird Cage, is the brilliant musical written by Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman. La Cage Aux Folles is based on the original French play with the same name written in 1973 by Jean Poiret. It was another ten years before La Cage Aux Folles made it to Broadway for this 1983 debut! The original Broadway production received nine Tony nominations and six Tony wins. Some of the categories best noted for La Cage Aux Folles are Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book. The play took a hiatus for many years before being revived on Broadway in 2004. The 2004 Broadway revival of La Cage Aux Folles won a Tony Award for Best Revival. In 2008 La Cage Aux Folles won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. In 2010 La Cage Aux Folles was nominated for eleven Tony Awards and won again the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, making La Cage Aux Folles the only musical to win Best Revival more than once!

In the fall of 2011 La Cage Aux Folles embarked on another National Tour. This exciting and colorful play is centered on a gay couple named Georges and his fun-loving “wife” Albin. Georges is the esteemed owner of the prominent drag nightclub in St. Tropez called La Cage Aux Folles, or The Bird Cage. Georges and Albin live in the apartment above La Cage Aux Folles along with their black maid Jacob. Albin is the star performer of La Cage Aux Folles and uses the alias Zaza. La Cage Aux Folles depicts the happy couple living in perfect harmony until one day Georges receives a request from his son Jean-Michel. Jean Michel is engaged to the daughter of the head of the “Tradition, Family, and Morality Party” that is in fact on a mission to close down all drag clubs in St. Tropez. This awkward set-up gets even worse when Jean-Michel tells his father that he has told his fiancée that Georges is in fact a retired diplomat.

La Cage Aux Folles then delivers a hysterical comedy of errors as Georges, Albin, the maid, and Jean Michel all strain to maintain the lie and hide the drag queen lifestyle from Jean Michel’s fiancée’s parents! You don’t want to miss this exciting and hilarious play live at the Los Angeles Pantages Theater. This incredible story is so lively and fun it’s no wonder the play and both revivals have won Tony’s.
