NEW YORK Barbra Streisand Review

October 15th, 2012
Barbra Steisand Review of NY Concert

Barbra Steisand Review of NY Concert

NEW YORK – Barbra Streisand was visiting the new Barclays Center and was happily singing to her Brooklyn roots. Thursday’s performance was at least three-hours and a signature move for returning to her hometown. The “Back to Brooklyn” tour will be coming up on Saturday.

Barbra is one of the music industry’s most successful performers — selling more than 140 million albums worldwide (71.5 million in the U.S. alone). The RIAA says that Streisand holds the sought-after record for the most top-ten albums by any female recording artist. She’s locked up a total of 31 top-ten albums since 1963. So obviously, coming home to Brooklyn is a pretty big deal.

Although Streisand is now 70 years old, that didn’t stop the 18,000+ crowd from showing up to see her in her flowing skirt and black blazer. She sang many of the classics, including “The Way We Were”, “Evergreen” and the very popular “People”. As she held the microphone with both hands to show that she still had the voice, the crowd went wild. At one point, she said “Hello Brooklyn,” and the crowd erupted.

To compliment the great vocal performance, Streisand told jokes and responded to the screams from the passionate audience. A video played on the big screen depicting people from Streisand’s neighborhood who discussed their experiences with the singer — pointing out her personality traits, talents, and even prominent body parts — particularly her nose.

She exclaimed “I left Brooklyn to pursue my dreams and Brooklyn never quite left me.” The legend of a singer wowed the audience and often carried on conversations or poked jokes at fans. The people laughed and seemed to have an incredible time cheering her on.

The light show was fantastic and the orchestral group played in a pit by the stage. As she strolled around the stage, the visuals of purple and blue lights adorned the stage and orchestra. Although Streisand is older now, she was performing both while sitting and standing, at times she would break to answer questions from fans who had submitted questions before the show. Apparently, the audience was curious about her thoughts on lip syncing. She replied, “I’ve heard about that. I could never do it because I’m so bad at it.”. The crowded laughed and overall it was a really great time.

It would seem that politics came into the picture a bit when she made a comment about “Big Bird” — referring to the Romney vs Obama battle.

Streisand was complimented by fellow trumpet player Chris Botti and her son Jason Gould. Jason at one point earned an ovation, with the crowd standing up on their feet. The ovation was greet by Jason’s mother saying “Oh my God”.

Barbra referenced Donna Summer by performing a song they sang together called “No More Tears”. She also gave a tribute to composer Marvin Hamlisch — her late friend by singing, “The Way We Were”.

One of the best moments of the night was when she referenced another Brooklyn artist, Jay-Z. She changed some of the lyrics of her song “You’re the Top” by saying Jay-Z lyrics like “You’re a Brooklyn Net, on a private jet”, which made some of the younger crowd quite enthused.

Overall, Streisand really overwhelmed the audience who seemed satisfied and yearning for more. The “Back to Brooklyn” tour continues… on November 9th Barbara Streisand will preform at the Hollywood Bowl.

Jeremy Lin Verbally Agrees to Houston Rockets

July 8th, 2012
Jeremy Lin

Jeremy Lin

As of July 6, last season’s NBA sensation Jeremy Lin has verbally agreed to sign a four year offer sheet with the Houston Rockets. The New York Knicks have until July 11th to make a counteroffer.

You can see the 2012-2013 Houston Rockets Schedule or the New York Knicks Schedule.

The purported deal is said to be approximately worth $28.8 million. Of that 28.8 million, 10.2 million would come in Lin’s first two seasons with the Rockets, and over $9 million in each of the last two years of the deal.

Lin, a restricted free agent, can still be retained by the New York Knicks if they decide to match Houston’s offer. Likewise, the Knicks have been adamant that they intend to do everything they can to keep the star player.

A source within the league stated that the Rockets intended to offer Lin a back worthy deal worth roughly $30 million. Currently, it is estimated that the best deal the Knicks can offer Lin is a four year contract worth $24.5 million.

Ironically, the Rockets had Lin in their own training camp last season, but waived him due to roster space. Now Houston is doing everything within their powers to get him back.

Lin, who was undrafted out of Harvard, averaged 14.6 points, 6.2 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 35 games with 25 starts last season for the Knicks.

The Houston Rockets already are extremely popular in Asia due to the playing career of their former star Yao Ming, who retired in 2011. Jeremy Lin could certainly add to their appeal in the region as the first American-born player of Chinese or Taiwanese decent.

Looking for 2012 US Open tennis tickets?

January 28th, 2012

The US Open Tennis is held every year in August and September over a two-week period (the weeks before and after Labor Day weekend), so August 27th – September 9th, 2012 will be the dates for the 2012 US Open Tennis Tournament.

It seems like every year that the U.S. Open tennis tournament somehow gets better. That certainly was the case again in ’11 when the two-week event at the USTA Billie Jean National Tennis Center in New York City provided countless thrilling moments and matches from start to finish. There were some huge upsets as always, but plenty of marquee names made it to the later rounds, which culminated with a spectacular men’s final featuring Novak Djokovic against Rafael Nadal. That match was set up by two tremendous semifinals with Djokovic beating Roger Federer in an epic five set match and Nadal just getting by Andy Murray. The Djokovic-Nadal final had every seat filled at Arthur Ashe Stadium, and the U.S. Open ticket holders were treated to a great match that day as Djokovic managed to prevail in four sets. The women’s singles final was also memorable, as Australian Samantha Stosur took out fan favorite Serena Williams. All in all, it was a great U.S. Open, and the next one should be just as good. So now is the time to order your U.S. Open tennis tournament tickets.

The world’s tennis superstars match up every year for the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center — you can be at Center Court as the greats serve, smash and sweat their way to victory. With last year’s champions defending their titles, the 2012 US Open Tennis tournament promises to be full of grunts, groans, and glory.

The U.S. Open is the largest of the four majors when it comes to seating capacity, and in many ways it could be said that it is more popular than the Australian Open, Wimbledon and BNP Paribas Open. Part of the reason for its popularity is the venue and location itself, as Arthur Ashe Stadium, which has a capacity of 23,200 as the largest tennis venue in the world, and the 10,000-seat Louis Armstrong Stadium are both great places to watch tennis. And of course New York City is a great place to visit and do some sightseeing when you are not watching tennis. We can even help you find some Broadway show tickets or New York City sports tickets for any other events you want to see. So order your U.S. Open Tennis tickets today.

Here, you can get US Open tennis tickets for all 26 sessions from beginning to end. Whether you want to sit courtside or find something more affordable in the upper level, we have the right US Open tickets for you. You can browse through hundreds of listings to find the right tickets based on your budget and your seating preferences.

US Open tennis tickets are available for all sessions and dates, including all main draw tennis tickets, US Open quarterfinal tennis tickets, US Open semi-final tennis tickets, and US Open final tennis tickets. 2012 US Open Tennis Championships are held at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Corona, New York. US Open tennis tickets are available at all price ranges for all sessions.

NBAs biggest secret-Memphis and the Grizzlies

January 25th, 2012

In big media companies, you are not allowed to write or speak about the Memphis Grizzlies.

“Nobody cares,” is the common refrain.

Well, it’s time to start caring, and we are going to bend over backwards to explain why that should be so.

First, the basketball part: The Grizzlies play in a division that is home to the NBA’s two hottest teams, the other being the Houston Rockets, who also have won seven straight games. Memphis pulled off an amazing comeback last night to keep their streak alive, rallying from 16 points down in the fourth quarter to defeat the Golden State Warriors 91-90.

Second, the non-basketball part.

If you attend a game in Memphis, you can exit the arena and walk two short blocks to Beale Street, where you can listen to outstanding live music seven nights a week while downing a 32-ounce coldie that’ll set you back a mere $2.

If you are lucky, the Grizzlies dance team will stop by your juke joint and join you for a beverage. And as my friend and colleague Frank Isola of the New York Daily News so astutely observed and tweeted last season, there is no better assemblage of fine young women representing an NBA team than the members of that particular dance team.

Third, if you have an off-night in Memphis, you can get in your rental car, drive south into Mississippi toward the Tunica Casino and Resort and motor through miles and miles of soybean fields before your senses awake. You can smell it a mile away: Fried chicken.
And if you stop at that chicken stand out in the middle of nowhere, you will eat what Colonel Sanders is secretly chowing down on in heaven. Man, it’s manna, I tell you.
But those last two items are not the reason you are here for your daily update.

So let’s get back to the basketball, and take a closer look at what the Grizzlies pulled off last night in Oakland. After scoring a mere 35 points in the first half while playing their third game in four nights, the Grizzlies erupted for 39 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Warriors 91-90, coming back from a 20-point deficit in the final 15 1/2 minutes.

“We were dead in the water in the first half. We had no answers,” coach Lionel Hollins said. “We don’t quit; we fight. We did that, and we were able to come back and get this win, which is a sweet win.”

It would be a disservice to the Rockets to continue this conversation without including them next. They play in a sprawling metropolis with no zoning rules, which is why you can drive to the far corners of the city and stumble upon one or two 50-story skyscrapers that would seem to have no business being there. For miles around, the next tallest buildings are two-story strip malls.

Back when Jeff Van Gundy was coaching the Rockets, I was working down in Houston and was stopped at a red light when who should pull up in the next lane? None other that JVG himself. “Worst traffic city in America,” Van Gundy observed. “New York has nothing on this place.”
Anyway, it was McHale appreciation night (NOT!) in Minneapolis last night, and the crowd booed McHale lustily during introductions before McHale got the last laugh with a 107-92 victory over the Timberwolves, who got 39 points from Kevin Love (5-for-5 on 3-pointers) and 12 more assists from Ricky Rubio.
The Rockets’ seven-game winning streak has only moved them into fourth-place in the Southwest Division, where they still trail the Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio.

The Spurs were only 1-6 entering their game against the lowly Hornets, but Tim Duncan turned back the clock and scored a season-high 28 points — the final two coming from just inside the foul line off an inbounds play for the game-winning points with 1.4 seconds left. “It was a mix of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, a kind of sky-hook, and we’ll take it,” Tony Parker said of Duncan’s 13-foot game-winner over New Orleans Hornets center Emeka Okafor. Parker added 20 points and a career-high 17 assists.
