Feelings of fear had to be welling up in the stomachs of the Grizzlies and their fans Wednesday night as an worrying pattern repeated itself. As in Game 1, the Grizzlies developed a large lead on the LA Clippers through great defense and crisp offensive execution. And as in 1, they stopped doing those fantastic things, lost both their calmness and the higher part of that lead. This time, although, Memphis handled to hold on for an excruciating 92-80 win, closing Los Angeles’ series lead to 3-2.
Gasol has 23 points and Zach Randolph scored 19 as the Memphis Grizzlies avoided elimination by beating the Clippers on Wednesday night, forcing a Game 6 in the Western Conference first-round series.
Rudy Gay added 14 points for Memphis. Mo Williams had 20 points for the Clippers while Chris Paul scored 19 and Blake Griffin had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Blake Griffin and Chris Paul suffered second-half injuries that may affect their statuses for Game 6. Griffin hyperextended his left knee, the same knee that required surgery treatment before the 2009-10 season. Griffin returned to the game in the 4th quarter, though.
The Grizzlies built the lion’s reveal of that lead and set the tone for the game’s first three quarters with a convincing 22-5 first-quarter run. Most of that run came on the backs of Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph. The Grizzlies big men, who had been so instrumental in their team’s first-round upset of the Spurs last year, had been conspicuous mostly for their irrelevance to the series’ previous three games.
The Clippers closed the third quarter with a 14-2 run and got within six twice to conjure up thoughts of Memphis blowing a 27-point lead in Game 1. Foye pulled the Clippers within 85-79 on a layup with 55.7 seconds left. The Grizzlies led 57-42 at halftime and led by as many as 24 before the Clippers tried to make it interesting again.
This stretch of play also revealed a troubling weakness in the Grizzlies: Memphis does not have a true point guard backing up Conley. O.J. Mayo is the default replacement, and Mayo is nowhere near the ballhandler, playmaker or floor general that Conley is. The Clippers pressured Mayo relentlessly when he ran the point. Suddenly, Memphis was struggling to execute its offense. Twice, Paul took the ball from Mayo and initiated transition offense in the other direction.
Up by six with just 44.1 seconds left, Randolph hit a free throw. He missed the second, but Rudy Gay swooped in for the rebound and then glided to the basket for a layup that put the game away. It wasn’t the cleanest or most attractive win, but the series moves on to Los Angeles nonetheless. And the Grizzlies might even get some sleep tonight.
Game 6 is on Friday in LA. If the Grizzlies win, Game 7 will be on Sunday in Memphis. You can still puchase Tickets for the game.

Last night the Los Angeles Clippers lost against the Memphis Grizzlies in a grueling 105-98 Memphis win. The result of last nights game placed both teams on an even keel in the playoff series; both the Los Angeles Clippers and the Memphis Grizzlies have won one game each! In their first playoff game the Clippers beat the Grizzlies 99-98. It has been a nail-bitingly close experience for Clippers fans. Game three for the Clippers-Memphis NBA Playoffs series will be back in Los Angeles this Saturday, May 5th.
The Clippers kicked off the playoffs in Game 1 with an explosive momentum, shooting nearly 65% of their shots in the first quarter alone. The second game didn’t fare as well for the Clippers, with the absence of Caron Butler due to a broken metacarpal and also losing their home game advantage. But Butler was replaced by Bobby Simmons in Game 2 and there are high hopes for Clippers fans at this Saturday’s game.
The Lakers are faring much better than their fellow Los Angeles Staples Center team; winning both of their NBA Playoff games thus far against the Denver Nuggets! They will lose their home game advantage for their next game as they head to Denver and the Clippers will switch places, heading to Los Angeles.

HAWKS Vs CLIPPERS 109, 102: Joe Johnson poured in 28 points as Atlanta held off visiting Los Angeles to bolster its chances of earning home-court advantage for the first round of the playoffs.
Johnson knocked down six 3-pointers to pace the fifth-place Hawks (39-26) who need a win Thursday against the Dallas Mavericks or a Boston Celtics loss Thursday to Milwaukee to earn the right to host Game 1 against the fourth-seeded Celtics when the postseason kicks off this weekend.
Jeff Teague chipped in 21 points while Josh Smith added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks.
Blake Griffin had a season-high 36 points and Chris Paul added 34 for the Clippers (40-25), whose defeat clinched the rival Lakers the Pacific Division title.
After trailing for most of the the third quarter, the Clippers drew even on a short Griffin hook shot with 3:41 remaining. The Hawks stormed back ahead on the strength of seven straight points from Teague, who added a block of a Paul layup during that stretch to keep Los Angeles at bay.
Teague, Johnson and Josh Smith combined to score 26 third-quarter points as Atlanta jumped out to an 85-72 advantage entering the fourth.
The Clippers closed to within six on a Mo Williams basket with 4:20 remaining, but Johnson responded with a 3-pointer that made it 100-91 and the Clippers didn’t challenge the rest of the way.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Clippers need a win in their season finale against the New York Knicks or the Memphis Grizzlies losing Wednesday or Thursday to secure home-court against the Grizzlies in round one. … Paul has attempted 30 free throws over the last two games, making 27. … Johnson has connected on 13 of 17 3-point attempts over his last three games.

Lakers 114, Thunder 106 (2 OT): Kobe Bryant scored 19 of his 26 points in the final 3:56 of regulation and overtime as host Los Angeles overcame an 18-point deficit to move a game ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers in the race for the Pacific Division crown.
Bryant went for eight points in the second overtime, giving the Lakers the lead for good with a jumper in the final minute.
Pau Gasol added 20 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists for Los Angeles.
The game took an ugly turn late in the second quarter when Metta World Peace celebrated his dunk by throwing a vicious elbow into the side of James Harden’s head. Harden stayed down for several minutes and World Peace was ejected for the flagrant foul type 2.
The Thunder, who were leading by a point at the time, turned the game in their favor after the incident. Kevin Durant buried the two flagrant free throws and scored the final four points of the second quarter.
Oklahoma City came out of the break on fire, running the lead up to as much as 77-59 late in the third.
The Thunder were still up 84-70 with 7:13 left in the game when Los Angeles made a move, getting a pair of 3-pointers from Steve Blake and a three-point play from Bryant during an 18-3 burst. Bryant’s one-footed 3-pointer from the top of the key as the shot clock was winding down gave the Lakers their first lead 88-87 since World Peace’s elbow.
Durant and Russell Westbrook combined to shoot 2 for 12 in the fourth quarter but Westbrook hit four free throws in the final 1:13 to force overtime.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Westbrook finished 3 for 22 from the floor for 14 points while Durant scored 35 on 11-of-34 shooting. … Harden did not return to the game, finishing with 14 points in 13 minutes. … The Lakers outscored the Thunder 30-14 in the fourth quarter. … Oklahoma City dropped 1 1/2 games behind the San Antonio Spurs for the top spot in the West.

 Los Angeles Clippers Offical Partner Barrys Ticket Service The second-longest active postseason drought is over. The Clippers are officially in the NBA playoffs this year. They had more than just making the NBA playoffs on their minds after defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder Monday night,
Monday night’s heavyweight Western Conference bout ending in a surprising manner, as the LA Clippers beat the Oklahoma City Thunder, 92-77. The game locked up Lob City’s postseason bid, marking the first time the Clippers have made the playoffs since 2006.
Los Angeles was lead by Blake Griffin who had 17 points and 11 rebounds, but got some serious support from Nick Young off the bench who went for 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 3-of-4 from downtown.
The real turning point in the game came in the 3rd quarter where L.A. topped Oklahoma 23 to 14. Durant mustered 24 points, but James Hardin only had 12 while Russell Westbrook only managed nine points to go along with five turnovers.
The L.A. faithful were in attendance to celebrate their playoff qualifying night as the franchise enjoyed their 32nd consecutive sellout crowd.
There was a time, for example, the bulk of the team’s existence that simply making the NBA playoffs would have been the most a Clippers fan would dare to expect from a team that has finished with a record above .
The Clippers’ 2005-06 playoff appearance represents the only time they’ve won a playoff series while playing in Los Angeles, and even then they didn’t get beyond the second round.
The playoff berth was actually sealed in the first half when the Houston Rockets lost to the Denver Nuggets, but give the Clippers some style points for the win over the Thunder.
The Clippers rank first in the league in points per possession (PPP) on shots the ballhandler takes in the pick-and-roll, while Paul ranks sixth among all players. Point being, if Paul gets a favorable switch or the space to operate coming off a screen, he’s one of the best point producers in the league.
To properly blow up a pick-and-roll, you need to have mobile, intelligent big men. The Lakers are a perfect example of this. Pau Gasol is one of the best in the business at showing hard on a screen, then recovering properly. He’s a big reason the Lakers rank 9th in pick-and-roll ballhandler defense, even with the molasses-like duo of Derek Fisher and Steve Blake covering the ball most of the year.
Although they probably won’t meet in the first round, offensively the Clippers would love a matchup against the San Antonio Spurs, who rank as the league’s worst defensive team in PPP allowed to ballhandlers in the pick-and-roll. The Spurs have immobile bigs and lack the ability to switch their bigs on to guards — a huge reason why the previous meetings between these two teams have been so high scoring.
The Denver Nuggets would be another favorable matchup, as they check in as the 20th best team in spot-up PPP, and 23rd in 3-point percentage. However, both the Grizzlies and Nuggets pale in comparison to one of the best matchups for the Clippers and one of the worst shooting teams in the league — the Utah Jazz. The Jazz are 28th in the league in spot-up opportunities and 29th in 3-point shooting at a woeful 30.7 percent, which is almost ten percentage points lower than the first place Spurs. The Jazz are on the outside looking in at this point, but the Clippers would love to somehow see them in the first round.
The NBA playoffs begin April 28. The Clippers will play four of their remaining five games on the road, including visits to Denver, Phoenix and Atlanta before closing out the regular season April 25 in New York.

CLIPPERS Vs THUNDER : Nick Young scored 19 points off the bench, Blake Griffin had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Los Angeles dominated play in the second half in beating the Oklahoma City Thunder for the second time in less than a week.
The win against the conference-leading Thunder was icing on the cake for the Clippers, who learned moments before tipoff they had clinched their first playoff berth since 2005-06.
Randy Foye scored 13 points and Chris Paul finished with 12 points and 10 assists as Los Angeles held superstars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook in check while moving within a game of the Lakers for first place in the Pacific Division.
Durant scored only five of his 24 points after halftime and Russell Westbrook shot 4 of 16 from the floor for nine points as the Thunder recorded their lowest point total of the season.
With the game tied at 66 entering the fourth, Mo Williams nailed a 3-pointer that jump-started the Clippers. Young later made a jumper to open a 13-3 run that included six points from Griffin, four coming on back-to-back dunks. The spurt was capped by a Williams’ 3 for the 87-75 lead with 3:58 remaining.
Durant had 19 points in the first half, but the Clippers put the clamps down defensively in the third. Durant was held scoreless and the Thunder made only six baskets in the frame.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Paul was announced Monday as the recipient of the Sportsmanship Award for the Pacific Division. … The Clippers won three of the four matchups this season. … Young’s point total was his highest with the Clippers since being acquired from Washington. … Durant missed all seven of his 3-pointers.

Preview: Sacramento Kings At L.A. Clippers

THE STORY: A lot has happened in the two days since the Sacramento Kings and the Los Angeles Clippers met. Kings center DeMarcus Cousins was fined $25,000 on Friday for publicly criticizing the officials and also called Clippers forward Blake Griffin “an actor” and said the All-Star was “babied.” “He’s the poster child of the league,” Cousins said. “He sells tickets, but he’s babied. Bottom line.” The teams meet Saturday at Staples Center to complete the home-and-home as the Clippers look to sweep the three-game season series.

ABOUT THE KINGS (19-36): With 12, Cousins is one technical away from an automatic one-game suspension, but he doesn’t plan to change the way he plays – especially tonight. Cousins fouled out of Thursday’s game after playing just 18 minutes. He scored only eight points and did not attempt a free throw. The Kings are basically out of playoff contention, so playing spoiler is something to which they can cling. “It’s going to be intense,” said Kings guard Tyreke Evans. “(There) might be some people coming back with bruises.”
ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (33-22): The Clippers have won seven of eight and will try to cut into the Lakers’ lead in the Pacific Division. Griffin refused to get into a war of words with Cousins. Coach Vinny Del Negro praised Griffin’s self-control. “I thought it got a little physical there,” Del Negro said of Thursday’s matchup. “But Blake’s doing a good job with that, keeping his composure. That was big.” Clippers guard Mo Williams, who has missed eight games because of a sprained left big toe, hopes to play Saturday night.

The Pacific Division foes have split the first two of three meetings this season.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (35-21): Andrew Bynum wasn’t around to see the conclusion of the Lakers’ 112-107 loss to Houston on Friday, as the All-Star center was ejected early in the fourth quarter for a second technical. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak. Bynum has been a dominating force of late and was coming off one of his better scoring performances of the campaign when he had 36 points against the Clippers while nursing a sprained ankle.
ABOUT THE SUNS (28-27): The Suns had surged in recent weeks, winning 11 of 17 games after a slow start before a late collapse on Friday. Phoenix surrendered the game’s final nine points in a 105-99 loss to Denver. “It was a bad loss for us,” point guard Steve Nash said. “We had a bad close to the game and didn’t make plays down the stretch.” Nash had 14 points and 11 assists and is averaging 11.2 assists per game, percentage points shy of his career high.

THE STORY: An all-Los Angeles tilt at this time of year usually means a lot more to the Lakers than it does to the Clippers. But with both L.A.-based teams jockeying for playoff positioning, Wednesday’s game carries significance for everyone as the Lakers and Clippers do battle at the Staples Center. As the basketball season winds down, the excitement heats up as another NBA Playoff season kicks off for a battle to win the national championship.
The Los Angeles Lakers may undoubtedly be one of the greatest franchises in the history of professional sports. The Lakers have made an astounding 47 playoff appearances, captured the division title 27 times, made 25 NBA Finals appearances and won the NBA championship 11 times throughout their LA Staples Center history.
The team won its first championship in 1972 thanks to the remarkable play of Wilt Chamberlain, Gail Goodrich and Jerry West. The Lakers would later enjoy their most impressive run during the 1980s, when they ascended to dynasty status by capturing the NBA championship in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988.
After a period of rebuilding, the Lakers would return as a top contender with the pairing of All-Stars Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal to capture five championships in the 2000s. The team capped off their 50th season in Los Angeles with yet another championship win in 2010, laying the groundwork for several more decades of playoff success.
Of course, some of the greatest contributors to the team’s postseason success are the stellar coaches and players who have made their mark in the history of NBA lore. The 2012 NBA Playoffs are scheduled to start on April 28th, 2012 with the last possible 2012 NBA Finals date scheduled for June 26th, 2012. They seeding rewards the teams that have the best record.
