Chris Paul LA Clippers NO 1 MVP Candiate
Chris Paul is currently leading the race to the 2013 season MVP title and it’s no surprise. It’s not only about the stats and the scores he provides. It’s bigger. It’s about the impact he had and continues to have in the Clippers organization. It’s about him providing solutions each night and playing like an on-court coach, making his teammates better. Team success comes through individual effort and each member of the Clippers team knows that well. This great performance and the winning record our team has, exposes Paul’s impact even further. Let’s take a look at what he has achieved up to now this season.
Number wise, the five-time all-star point guard has had an excellent season, averaging almost 17 PPG, 9.7 assists and 2.6 steals. In fact he ranks first in the league in steals and trails only Rajon Rondo in assists. He is the only player in the entire league to average at least 15 points, nine assists and two steals per game. His numbers went up during the historic 17-game winning streak of LA, but even after that he continued to deliver huge games. In fact he dished a season-high 16 assist during last week’s win against the Mavs.
But believe me his value goes well beyond just numbers and stats. Some things in basketball can’t be counted by numbers, but those who watch and know about fundamentals, can understand the difference between a good player and a great player. Paul is surely one great player. The way he sets up his team, making plays for his teammates and easing up things for the rest of his team is a unique charisma that only a few players in the entire NBA possess. His Basketball IQ and his awareness on offense and on D is what complete the picture of a true superstar and team leader. Most of his teammates express their admiration to Paul’s performance and presence on the court. Some even compare him to Jason Kidd during his legendary days.
One thing is for certain. The LA Clippers are not the joke they used to be, even after the acquisition of Blake Griffin. Our entire organization has done a terrific job and our team has all the potential to drive us to the NBA finals and even perhaps celebrate our first Championship. Things might go even better and Chris Paul is the one who can lead us all the way to the top. He well deserves the MVP award, judging from his up to now performance and impact to our team.

 Heat Championship Rings
After a tough first 9 seasons in the NBA, with lots of criticism, lots of hate and love for his face, Lebron James finally redeemed himself last season winning the long-awaited Championship Ring. Can he really do it again this year?
Whether you hate Lebron, love him or simply don’t care about him –that would be curious- you have to admit that he is the best player currently in the NBA. I am not talking about best scorer, best passer or best rebounder or even the most clutch player. I am talking about doing all these together at a superior level, non-human, video-game like. Even if you were a tough NBA defender it’s almost impossible to stop a 6-8” body-frame weighting 250 lbs coming towards you at full speed. Combine it with top-class agility and shooting stroke and you have an ultimate weapon at your arsenal. I mean, what can’t Lebron really do? The most usual answer to this question until last June was that he can’t win a championship. Or some jokes about giving him a dollar and him giving you ¾ back. Well, all that has now changed, at least at some point. It’s always natural for a champion to ease the tension towards himself and that happened also with Lebron. Especially when this summer we all witnessed the Dwight Howard saga that finally ended up with him being traded to the Lakers. In fact the Lakers took a lot of the media attention and the criticism that Miami and Lebron had last year. It seems that together with power always comes responsibility and expectations for the greatest achievements. That’s what the Lakers face this year, they are in the tough position the Heat were last year. They are in a win now mode and not only because of getting 4 former all stars in their starting lineup, but also because everybody knows that in order to compete in the NBA, you need to be fresh (and young enough). The Lakers don’t have the luxury to wait a year or two like Miami did. On the other hand, the Lakers have already won several championships and the fans may not be so championship-hungry.
Back to Lebron and Miami, though, could they really make it to the finals again and win their second in a row? Only the Lakers have achieved to win two or more in a row the past decade. But the question might be which team can beat Miami in 7 games? As they’ve proved last year, they can do well even with tall teams managing well their weakness at frontcourt. They found the way to make the most out of their roster. What they wisely did last year for example against the Thunder at the finals, was that they switched Shane Battier at the four. That changed the game, because it forced Serge Ibaka, the monster blocker, run all the court around to chase Battier and defend him shooting the three. So that left the inside space clear Lebron and Wade. This year, they’ve added also Ray Allen, who needs no comments about his three pointers and Rashard Lewis, plus they’ve kept all the valuable members at their team. And with Lebron having another super season this far, they look like they are eligible to repeat. Let’s wait and see how things go for Miami and all the other true Championship contenders.

The hottest team in the NBA this season, the Los Angeles Clippers, almost had their 15-game winning streak broken by the Utah Jazz, but Chris Paul made sure that would not happen. He scored the last 7 points for his team, including some clutch free throws. In addition, the great defense from Matt Barnes down to the final seconds forced a tough shot from Randy Foye that could have won the game for the Jazz, but didn’t connect thus giving the Clips the win over the Jazz by two points, 116-114.
Foye, with 28 points on 5/9 shooting from 3-point range, was determined to break the streak of his former team. He led his team in scoring and had a great shooting game, going 8-13 from the field. Al Jefferson and Gordon Hayward also had a good performance 22 and 17 points respectively for the Jazz. Despite scoring 114 points in the game and shooting a tremendous 60% from beyond the arc, the Jazz couldn’t capitalize in the end. The lead for the most part of the game and in fact had a burst 2nd quarter scoring 36 points and in the meantime holding their opponents to 19.
The Clippers were up by just 1 with 23” to go in the game and that was when Chris Paul took over. He scored a free-throw line jumper after a signature crossover dribble to allowed him to get open. At the next possession he got fouled and made 1 of two from the charity stripe to put his team up by two, 114-112. However, Blake Griffin fouled Al Jefferson while trying to rebound the ball and Big Al made both free throws that tied the game. Paul then got fouled and this time he didn’t miss from the free throw line, putting his team up by two, 116-114. That ended to be the final score of the game, after Foye’s desperate three pointer that didn’t go. He was defended with mastery by Matt Barnes, who continues to deliver great performances for his team. This time he stayed low on scoring, just 6 points, but his great defense on the last possession was the determining factor for the outcome of the game.
Paul led all scorers with 29 points to go along with 6 assists. Griffin finished with 22 and grabbed 13 rebounds. All starters for the Clippers finished in double figures. “We just got stops, defensively. They were hitting shots, we got stops and then we started hitting shots. Everything is going to balance out. Some nights you are not going to have it all four quarters. You might have it one or two and you have to make the most out of it and that is what we did.” ,said star forward Blake Griffin.
The Jazz and the Clippers face each other again on Sunday night, at their last game for the year at the Staples Center.

In a game that came down to the last second, the Lakers proved to be lucky and managed to survive and take the victory by one point. This was the third win in a row for LA and that tied their longest streak of the season, while for the Bobcats it was the 12th straight loss. No matter the opponent though, it was really important for the Lakers to return to wins and hope to gain momentum for the next games.
As usual, Kobe did his thing, scored 30 points on 11-24 shooting, including a couple of acrobatic plus-one layups in traffic. It was the seventh straight with 30 or more for him. . “We’re just moving the ball. I’m being aggressive and looking for opportunities to get a few guys involved.” ,Kobe commented. He lifted his team, which was down by 9 on the break and led it straight to the victory. In fact it was a 28-4 run by them that erased the 18 point deficit of the third quarter. But the Bobcats didn’t surrender and in fact tied the game at 97 with 2:17 left in the game. However, Kobe wouldn’t let this thing go out of his control. He answered with two back to back clutch shots. The former Laker Ramon Sessions completed a three point play in an effort to keep his team in the game but the Bobcats missed on 3 consecutive shots in the last 10”, including a desperation three from Gerald Henderson in the last second that could win the Bobcats the game.
Pau Gasol returned to the lineup after missing eight games finishing with 10 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Coach Mike D’Antoni only used three of his reserves. Two of them, Metta World Piece who didn’t start this one and Joddie Meeks finished the game with 17 points. Dwight Howard added a smooth double double with 16 points and 18 rebounds and that pretty much was enough for the Lakers to get away with a win. “I’m trying to figure out what’s the best way to play the team. We will keep looking at film, keep revisiting. We have a couple practices and we’ll keep looking at different combinations.” ,said Coach Mike D’Antoni after the game.
For Charlotte, they got a great game out of Kemba Walker who scored 28 and dished 6 assists and also Ramon Sessions had 20 off the bench. The Lakers hit 21 free throws in 27 attempts, many of them in the third quarter and that got them back in the game.
The Lakers take three days off before playing against the Golden State Warriors at the Oracle Arena and that finishes their games for this week. A tough game against the NBA record leaders New York Knicks follows, Tuesday night. The Charlotte Bobcats will travel to Phoenix to play against the Suns on Wednesday.

Saturday night basketball and it was just too much from the Hawks. Again, it might be too little from the Clippers, who can’t wait to return home, after the 3rd straight away loss.
The Hawks controlled the game almost all the way from start to finish. Led by Jeff Teague with 19 points and 11 assists – his second double-double in the last 2 games – turned it up and caught on fire after the first quarter and kept really going till the end. The Clippers really froze down to start the second quarter allowing an 18-0 run. Zaza Pachulia added another 19points (season high) and 12 rebounds for Altanta, who got 17 from Josh Smith and 18 points from Lou Williams coming off the bench. “We’re playing well. The chemistry is there.”
As they did in Friday’s loss against the Nets, the Clippers didn’t do well offensively. Blake Griffin had 22 points and Chris Paul added 19, but the rest of the team had a tough night shooting the ball, just 39.1% on 18-46.LA was outscored 46-30 in the paint, pretty bad for a team ranked 3rd overall coming in the game. Quarters closed at 24-21, 17-30, 19-34 and 33-19.
The game included some real nice moments. After a first quarter reverse under the basket dunk Blake Griffin, it was Josh Smith who got off to a fast break and avoided the block of Griffin to stuff it hard to the rim with 7 minutes to go on the 3rd. Then again, Eric Bledsoe produced highlight material on a put back slam for the Clippers almost midway through the fourth period. But the dunks and the flying weren’t enough for LA.
On the night’s notables, the season’s fourth technical of Blake Griffin came with him on the bench! Jamal Crawford scored his 26th four-point play with 7.43 left in the game on a tough high arcing shot. Josh Smith, the Hawks’ second-leading scorer, Smith with 15.2 PPG sat out the entire second quarter after coming to the bench with two fouls late in the first period.
“There was an exchange there … and I wasn’t going to play him, at least not in the rest of the half. We talked at halftime.” Said coach Larry Drew.
Coming up next For the Clippers, Monday vs. Hornets. As for the Hawks, Wednesday vs. Bobcats

It’s early in the season but not too early to see a clear theme taking shape. The Clippers are legit and clearly the best basketball team that currently occupies the Staples Center. They’ve now run off four consecutive big wins against the Spurs, Grizzlies, Hawks and Heat, with the seven point margin over the Heat being the smallest margin in those four wins. Those previous four games, like last night against the Miami Heat, weren’t really all that close.
The most impressive part of the win streak is the types of teams they’re beating, matching up effectively with all of them. The Clippers can match the Spurs bench and versatility. They can match the Grizzlies superior size and strength inside. Last night they overpowered the small-ball heat with a dominating combination of size and quickness inside, depth off the bench and versatile perimeter play. Pick your style and this deep Clippers team can match it.
Last night was another impressive step in the evolution of Blake Griffin as a complete player. When his spot up jumper is falling he’s un-defendable. If the defender tries to come out and defend his jump shot he can easily blow past any four or five in the league. Try to cover him in the post? He can easily overpower smaller bigs like Chris Bosh. Try to cover him with Shane Battier? Good luck.
Beyond Griffin several others things stood out on the Clippers side yesterday, most notably the Clippers bench. Eric Bledsoe’s block on Dwyane Wade will make all the highlight reels and rightfully so. According to Twitter Lebron called Bledsoe “Little Lebron” following his performance. Highlight reel aside Bledsoe is quickly becoming a game-changing difference maker off the bench with his phenomenal athleticism and ability to get to the rim. He provides a perfect change of pace with Chris Paul, not giving teams any break when Paul gets a rest.
Bledsoe is just part of the story when it comes to the Clippers reserves. Matt Barnes and Jamal Crawford have stepped up huge in recent games. The Clippers second unit has a great balance of offensive threats (Crawford), defensive stoppers (Barnes) and size and strength (Ronny Turiaf and Ryan Hollins). Early on there were questions about how Del Negro would mold this unit together. The roles are now being clearly defined and the argument can be made that the Clippers are now the deepest team in basketball.
A couple of early losses aside when power ranking the west the argument has to be made that the Clippers are the top team. Of course it’s a long season and injuries can happen, with Griffin and Chris Paul both being somewhat injury prone in the past. Still, unforseen injury aside the Clippers are going to be a forced to be reckoned with and are real contenders—and the top team in LA. Hopefully the LA media will get off the Lakers soap opera a bit and realize the story that’s brewing in Clipperland.
As far as the Heat are concerned it’s not surprising they lost to the Clippers in LA, something they’ve done in all three years of the Lebron James Heat era. The fashion in which the Heat lost that has to concern Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra. Like in Memphis and Houston on this current road trip the Heat displayed a lack of intensity on defense. The good thing for Heat fans is that the defensive intensity can be ratcheted up. The big factor that has to concern Heat Nation is the play of Dwayne Wade who just isn’t the same player. The second thing that jumped out is how another team was able to exploit the Heat’s “small ball”. Like Memphis earlier on the road trip it’s pretty clear that a team with dominant big men can exploit a lineup that sometimes employs Shane Battier at power forward. If Memphis or the Clippers find a way to get into the finals they could very well give the Heat quite a series.
Tickets for all Los Angeles Clippers home games are instock and onsale now.

This was clearly a pretty important game for the Lakers. They played with a lot of intensity and urgency. Unfortunately many of the ills that befell them thus far this season reared their head again—turnovers, missed foul shots and poor late game execution.
Last night was another game where the Lakers couldn’t hit the big shot when they needed to down the stretch. Danny Green stepped up and hit a big three to put the Spurs up by 2. The best the Lakers could do on the other end was a desperation Gasol three. Granted the Spurs did a great job locking down the passing lanes and not really giving Gasol an option, but the execution was poor. The desperation three was something you’d expect from a young team, not the most veteran team in the league.
Offensively the Lakers lack of a perimeter game allowed the Spurs to double Howard in the paint. The Spurs pressure forced Howard into six turnovers and several other wasted possessions where the Lakers threw up less than an ideal shot. You have to wonder how healthy Howard is at this point. He’s clearly not playing up to his standard defensively and doesn’t have the explosiveness yet. Until the Lakers prove they can consistently hit a jump shot teams are going to continue to double-team Howard, forcing him to do a lot of work inside and probably not the best for his recovery from surgery. If he has to expend so much energy on the offensive end how will his defense not suffer?
The Lakers lack of bench was again a factor in the sheer number of minutes the top unit played. The foursome of Gasol, Howard, Bryant and World Peace averaged 38 minutes between them with Howard playing 41 minutes. Contrast this to the Spurs starting five who averaged just 31 minutes. Whether it’s Bernie Bickerstaff or Mike Brown there’s simply no confidence in the Lakers bench players. With Mike D’Antoni and his high-octane offense coming in its questionable how five players over thirty-two years old will hold up over the long run.
Bickerstaff only went nine deep in the rotation with three of those bench players (Chris Duhon, Antawn Jamison and Jodie Meeks) going a combined -22. Contrast this with the Spurs Bench that went a combined +23. Although these numbers don’t necessarily take into account the natural ebb and flow of the game the Spurs there was a +45 bench swing in favor of the Spurs. Pop was able to play is starters limited minutes and get quality from the bench.
There’s really no relief in sight for the top unit. Antawn Jamison is clearly diminished as a player and at thirty-six likely has nothing left in the tank. There are Steve Blake trade rumors but who are they really going to get for Steve Blake at this point? On his podcast Bill Simmons floated the idea of a package deal that would bring Josh Smith to LA. Smith would clearly fit in the D’Antoni system, but what would motivate the Hawks to make that trade? They’d get some value for Smith when it’s questionable whether they can re-sign them. Gasol’s contract would also give them cap flexibility in the near future as well as an elite center to combine with Al Horford. It’s a compelling idea if they can pull it off.
We’ll sit back and see what happens when D’Antoni takes over. He’ll have his work cut out for him.

Matt Barnes has been suspended by the NBA for one game (without pay) … after the L.A. Clippers forward pled “no contest” to interfering with the duties of a police officer.
According to the NBA, Barnes will serve out his suspension tomorrow — when the Clippers play their season opener against the Memphis Grizzlies
