Los Angeles Kings vs New Jersey Devils Playoffs Round 4 Home Game 3

The Los Angeles Kings could be just one win away from their FIRST ever NHL Stanley Cup win.

The Kings lost 1-2 against the Devils last night, making the New Jersey Devils the third team in the history of the NHL to change their luck from being 0-3 in a seven game finals to winning two games, ensuring game 6.

The Kings have proven that they will do everything they can to end the series once and for all tomorrow night with the home-court Staples Center advantage once again playing in their favor!

Regardless of who wins the Stanley Cup this year, NHL History will be made:
•The Los Angeles Kings are looking for their first Stanley Cup in the team’s 45-year history.
•The Devils, should they win the next two games, would become the first team in 70 years to win a Stanley Cup after being down 3-0 in the series.

The Kings would also become the first team since the Detroit Red Wings pulled it off in 1997 to win the first two games of the Stanley Cup finals on the road and then win the title.

Since the 2000 playoffs, there have been 135 series played (not counting the 2012 Stanley Cup finals), according to CBS Sports. In 29 of those series, the road team won the first two games of the playoff series. In 23 of those 29 series, that road team went on to win the series and advance to the next round.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what playoff round had the most series where the road team won the first two games of the series (since 2000):

Conference Quarterfinals: 15 (those road teams won the series 10 of the 15 times)

Conference Semifinals: nine (those road teams won eight of the nine series)

Conference Finals: five (those road teams won the series each time)

The Kings are also the first road team to win the first two games of the series in each of four rounds of a playoff. The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim won the first two games of the first three rounds of the 2003 playoffs as the road team. In the finals, however, they lost Games 1 & 2 to the New Jersey Devils.

In 1949, the Toronto Maple Leafs won Games 1 and 2 as the road team in the semifinals and the Stanley Cup Finals. Whereas the Maple Leafs accomplished this feat in two rounds of the playoffs, the Kings accomplished it this year in four rounds of the playoffs.

The Kings are the 12th team to win Games 1 and 2 of the finals as the road team in a seven-game series. Of the previous 11 teams to accomplish this, nine went on to win the title. Will the Kings follow suit?

Last Night’s NBA Playoff’s: Grizzlies vs. Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers vs. Nuggets!

Last night the Los Angeles Clippers lost against the Memphis Grizzlies in a grueling 105-98 Memphis win. The result of last nights game placed both teams on an even keel in the playoff series; both the Los Angeles Clippers and the Memphis Grizzlies have won one game each! In their first playoff game the Clippers beat the Grizzlies 99-98. It has been a nail-bitingly close experience for Clippers fans. Game three for the Clippers-Memphis NBA Playoffs series will be back in Los Angeles this Saturday, May 5th.

The Clippers kicked off the playoffs in Game 1 with an explosive momentum, shooting nearly 65% of their shots in the first quarter alone. The second game didn’t fare as well for the Clippers, with the absence of Caron Butler due to a broken metacarpal and also losing their home game advantage. But Butler was replaced by Bobby Simmons in Game 2 and there are high hopes for Clippers fans at this Saturday’s game.

The Lakers are faring much better than their fellow Los Angeles Staples Center team; winning both of their NBA Playoff games thus far against the Denver Nuggets! They will lose their home game advantage for their next game as they head to Denver and the Clippers will switch places, heading to Los Angeles.

Aaron Harang Talks MLB and Dodgers! Woohoo!

The Los Angeles Dodgers now have the unbelievable talent and experience of veteran starting pitcher Aaron Harang in their rotation as they start their 2012-2013 Dodgers Season campaign. Despite having been sidelined in recent years by various health issues that put him on the disabled list multiple times, the veteran right-hander is coming off a rebound season, going 14-7 with a 3.64 ERA in 170.2 innings pitched.

The Dodgers are hopeful that Harang can stay healthy and keep up his performance as they finally landed the prolific pitcher late last year after having pursued Harang heavily in the past. The 33-year-old was signed to a 2-year, $12 million, free-agent contract with a mutual option for 2014 to help fill in the team after the departure of Hiroki Kuroda, slotting in as the Dodgers’ fourth starter.

“It made it more enticing, knowing it wasn’t something just spontaneous, like, ‘Let’s just go after this guy,’” Harang said. “It’s been in the back of my mind that they’ve wanted me a while. That made it an easier decision, knowing people want you and have been working at something for multiple years.”

For Harang, one of the added attractions of signing with the Dodgers was the proximity to home and playing at the Los Angeles Dodgers Stadium. The San Diego native was born on May 9, 1978 in San Diego, California and continues to reside in the area with his family. While pitcher-friendly Dodger Stadium is not quite as spacious as Petco Park – or as much as a veritable oasis for pitchers of any quality – the 6-foot-7, 260-pound right-hander is confident that his addition to the Dodgers rotation is a good fit and believes there is a very good chance that the Dodgers will contend this season.

“I’m excited about the opportunity I have here. This is a really good ballclub here. We definitely have a shot to be there at the end.”

Harang was first drawn into professional baseball after being selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 22nd round of the 1996 MLB Draft (661st overall) but he did not sign with the team, opting to finish college. Following his graduation from San Diego State University, Harang was drafted and signed by the Texas Rangers in the 6th round of the 1999 MLB Draft (195th overall), kicking off a solid career that has seen him soar into the Major Leagues and develop into a top-caliber pitcher.

Los Angeles Lakers 2012 Playoffs

As the basketball season winds down, the excitement heats up as another NBA Playoff season kicks off for a battle to win the national championship.

The Los Angeles Lakers may undoubtedly be one of the greatest franchises in the history of professional sports. The Lakers have made an astounding 47 playoff appearances, captured the division title 27 times, made 25 NBA Finals appearances and won the NBA championship 11 times throughout their LA Staples Center history.

The team won its first championship in 1972 thanks to the remarkable play of Wilt Chamberlain, Gail Goodrich and Jerry West. The Lakers would later enjoy their most impressive run during the 1980s, when they ascended to dynasty status by capturing the NBA championship in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988.

After a period of rebuilding, the Lakers would return as a top contender with the pairing of All-Stars Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal to capture five championships in the 2000s. The team capped off their 50th season in Los Angeles with yet another championship win in 2010, laying the groundwork for several more decades of playoff success.

Of course, some of the greatest contributors to the team’s postseason success are the stellar coaches and players who have made their mark in the history of NBA lore. Coaching greats Pat Riley, Bill Sharman and Phil Jackson have led Laker squads to several championship wins, and legends such as Chamberlain, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have sported the yellow and purple in many a playoff game.
The 2012 NBA Playoffs are scheduled to start on April 28th, 2012 with the last possible 2012 NBA Finals date scheduled for June 26th, 2012. They seeding rewards the teams that have the best record. There are some caveats; however, as a divisional winner is guaranteed to be seeded no worse than #4. The other tiebreakers that are used to determine the seeding for the 2012 NBA Playoffs.

There were six coaching changes made prior to the start of the 2011-12 NBA season. Of note is the LA Laker’s coach, Phil Jackson, heading into retirement again after failing to make the NBA finals in his final season.
Just like past years, the 2012 NBA Playoffs will feature 8 teams in each conference. Divisional winners earn automatic playoff spots and the five teams with the best records after the division champs earn the right to play in the post season. The teams are seeded based on record and matched up according to seed. For example, the #1 seed in each conference will play the #8 seed from that same conference. Each round of the playoffs consists of a best of 7 series with a total of four rounds in the tournament culminating with the 2012 NBA Championship.

The Los Angeles Lakers are overall favorite to win the 2012 NBA Championship, beside Miami Heat. These two teams are on a collision course towards meeting in the Finals which will definitely not disappoint.

Ron Artest Will Be Dancing With The Stars

Ron Artest can dance circles around most other players on court and he is one of the most important players of Los Angeles Lakers, but can he dance? His publicist Courtney Barnes says that he can’t.

But, Ron Artest is about to appear on the hit show of ABC, Dancing With The Stars. Artest and his publicist have made many public comments on how he cannot dance, that in itself will be a major draw to the show. It should be great fun to see the Lakers guard trip over himself executing a Mambo, Cucaracha and following the 1, 2, 3 and 5, 6, 7.

Earlier this summer, Artest himself had said that he plays defense and he doesn’t know if he can dance. Dancing With The Stars is slated to begin on the 18th of September, so it is safe to assume that Artest may not be available for assignments in the near future; as long as he manages to remain on the show with his two left feet, at least.

Artest had plans to play a few exhibition games with the Finland Basketball team called Loima Bisons during the NBA lockout period. This is not likely to happen because Dancing With The Stars is about to begin. Artest was also open to playing overseas with Cheshire Jets of the British Basketball League. Their season starts as September ends and goes on till April next year. Artest had told earlier that he may not be able to join the team until November this year, because of his appearance in the Finland team. Artest sure has a lot of plans on how to wait out the NBA lockout. And Dancing With The Stars seems to top the list.

Hope Solo is expected to dance with Artest. We love Artest, we would love to see him dance even more. We cannot wait for him to start dancing for us. All the best, Artest.

1897 Future Hall of Fame catcher Senator Roger Bresnahan makes his major league debut as a pitcher shutting out the Browns, 3-0.
1911 At Comiskey Park, Chicago hurler Ed Walsh, Sr. no-hits the Red Sox, 5-0. The future Hall of Famer’s son, Edward Arthur, will also pitch for the White Sox from 1928-1932.
1937 Dodger right-hander Fred Frankhouse tosses a rained shortened (8 2/3 innings) no-hitter beating the Reds, 5-0.
1938 In the first game of a twin bill at Yankee Stadium, Joe DiMaggio hits three consecutive triples. His offensive outburst helps the Bronx Bombers edge the Indians, 8-7.
1938 Monte Pearson becomes the first pitcher to throw a no hitter in Yankee Stadium. The right-hander faces only 27 batters, thanks to two double plays, beating the the Indians, 13-0, for his 10th consecutive victory.
1941 Beating the Braves 6-4, Charlie Root, best known for giving up Babe Ruth’s ‘called’ home run, becomes the first pitcher to win 200 games in a Cub uniform.
1946 At Owners’ Meeting, a committee formed to study integration, which includes Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, delivers its secretive report defending the covert color barrier which exists in professional baseball. The absurd reasons given to why blacks shouldn’t be allowed to play in the big leagues include an absence of skills due to inferior training and lack of fundamentals and the need to respect Negro League contracts, but another lesser known motivation may have been profit as revealed later in the report, “The Negro leagues rent their parks in many cities from clubs in Organized Baseball (and) Club owners in the major leagues are reluctant to give up revenues amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars every year” as well as the fear white fans would be driven away if black players attracted more minorites to the ballpark.
1951 Scoring all the Phillies’ runs in the victory over the Reds, Del Wilber hits three solo homers making it the first time in major league history a player has accounted for all the runs in 3-0 game with home runs. The 32-year old catcher will only hit a total of 19 homers during his major league career.
1955 In his second big league start, bonus baby Sandy Koufax two-hits the Reds at Ebbets Field, 7-0. Showing his future dominance of the 1960’s, the southpaw strikes out 14 Cincinnati batters.
1974 At Shea Stadium, Benny Ayala becomes the first National Leaguer in 13 years to hit a home run in his first major league at-bat. The Mets rookie goes deep off Astros’ hurler Tom Griffin in New York’s 4-2 win.
1975 At Candlestick Park, nearly half the outs in the Giants 9-1 victory over the Expos come via the strike out. John Montefusco, who goes the distance to get the win, strikes out 14 Montreal batters, and the ‘Count’ and his teammates reciprocate by whiffing 11 times, including the three times he goes back to the dugout with a bat in his hands.
1977 In an 8-2 victory at Yankee Stadium, Rangers Bump Wills and Toby Harrah hit back-to-back inside-the-park home runs on consecutive pitches. It is only time in baseball history the feat has been accomplished.
1978 By hitting his 200th home run, Reds’ second baseman Joe Morgan becomes the first major leaguer to hit 200 homers as well as steal 500 bases.
1982 In the 5-4 loss to the Brewers, A’s Rickey Henderson breaks Lou Brock’s 1974 single season record of 118 stolen bases. By stealing a total of four bases Rickey ends the day with 122 and will finish the season with 130.
1986 With one out in the bottom of the eleventh inning and the visiting Mets ahead, 6-5, Padres infielder Tim Flannery lines a single to center field where Lenny Dykstra comes up throwing to nail the runner trying to score from second base. Knocked on his back by Gary Templeton, catcher John Gibbons, from a prone position, throws a strike to Howard Johnson who tags out Flannery, trying to get to third base, ending the game with an unusual 8-2-5 double play.
1997 In honor of first baseman Jim Thome’s birthday, the Indians begin pulling up their socks to just below the knees. The Tribe will win 17 of 27 games en route to clinching American League East flag while sporting this new look.
1999 In a 4-1 Expos loss to the Reds at Olympic Stadium, Vladimir Guerrero’s hitting streak, the longest in the big leagues since 1987, ends at 31 consecutive games. The Montreal outfielder’s accomplishment sets a franchise record.
2001 In the Nippon Ham Fighters-Fukuoka Daiei Hawks contest, Michihiro Ogasawara doubles and tallies on Yukio Tanaka’s single breaking a 51-year Japanese record by scoring a run in 17 consecutive games. Indian Kenny Lofton (2000) and Yankee Red Rolfe (1939) share the major league record of 18 straight games.
2001 With his 17th dinger this month, Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa ties the National League record for August homers established by Willie Mays in 1965. Tiger Rudy York set the major league mark going yard 18 times in the eighth month of 1937.
2005 Jeff Kent becomes the first player to hit 300 homers as a second baseman. The Dodger infielder, who has surpassed Ryne Sandberg’s total of 277 last September, is the major league leader at this position with Joe Gordon holding the American League record with 246 round-trippers.
2005 After losing a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning against the Yomiuri Giants earlier in the season, Fumiya Nishiguchi (16-4) sees his perfect game against the expansion Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles go into extra innings. The Seibu Lions right-hander gives up a hit and has to settle for a 10-inning complete game shutout.
2007 Citing the need a fresh start, Drayton McLane, owner of the last place Astros, fires skipper Phil Garner and GM Tim Purpura. Bench coach Cecil Cooper is named interim manager with long-time team executive Tal Smith being appointed as general manager, also on interim basis.
2007 Jake Peavy becomes the Padres leader in career strikeouts when he punches out Orlando Hudson looking at an inside fastball in the first inning of a 3-1 San Diego victory over the Diamondbacks at PETCO Park. The right-handed fireballer, who fans 11 in the game, moves past Andy Benes who had struck out 1036 batters pitching for the Friars from 1989 to 1995.
