Kings take down the Blackhawks 2-25-12

February 27th, 2012

KINGS Vs BLACKHAWKS 4/0: Captain Dustin Brown overshadowed Jeff Carter’s debut with four points and his second career hat trick as Los Angeles snapped a four-game slide while handing the Chicago Blackhawks its second consecutive loss.

Brown recorded all three of his tallies on special teams, opening with a pair of power-play goals in the first period and scoring shorthanded in the second to complete the hat trick.

Defenseman Willie Mitchell, who signed a contract extension with the Kings on Friday, added a goal and an assist. Jonathan Quick made 19 saves in his seventh shutout of the season as Los Angeles moved back into a tie for the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference.

The lowest scoring team in the NHL, the Kings traded for the veteran Carter on Thursday. That move lifted some of the pressure from Brown, who has also been the subject of trade rumors.

After clinching is first multi-goal game of the season in the first, Brown forced a turnover with the Blackhawks on the power play early in the second period. The 27-year-old quickly turned up ice and received a perfect feed from Mitchell in the slot before slipping it past Corey Crawford for the hat trick and his 17th tally of the season.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Chicago was once again without captain Jonathan Toews (upper body). … After scoring 15 goals in four straight wins, the Blackhawks have totaled one in the last two games. … Jarret Stoll recorded three assists for the Kings.

Los Angeles is 3-1-1 in five  meetings this season, but Phoenix is unbeaten in five straight at home.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS West (Kings), FS Arizona Plus (Coyotes)

ABOUT THE KINGS (27-21-11):
It’s easy to see why the Kings have only two wins in their past eight games. They have managed three goals in  the six losses, including shutouts their two previous games. “The last  couple years, we’ve been battling for a playoff spot,” captain Dustin  Brown said. “As frustrating as these last two games have been,  offensively, we’ve got to refocus.” Goaltender Jonathan Quick has done  his part against the Coyotes, stopping 42 of 43 shots in the last two  meetings.

ABOUT THE COYOTES (29-21-9): While the Kings are headed in the wrong direction, the Coyotes are on an uptick, going  7-0-1 in February. Phoenix has grabbed 17 of a possible 20 points coming in, the main reason the club has jumped to seventh in the West – two  points in front of Calgary and Los Angeles. Forward Radim Vrbata has  been red-hot. He has five goals and four assists the past eight games,  including four game-winners, en route to a career-best 28 tallies.

OVERTIME:

1. Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith is unbeaten in his last seven starts while posting a minuscule 0.99 goals against average.

2. The Kings average 2.03 goals, last in the NHL.

PREDICTION: Coyotes 3, Kings 2 (OT)

Thursday, February 16, 2012 7:30 PM

Mike Smith recorded his second straight shutout by turning aside all 28 shots he faced and Radim Vrbata matched a career high with his 27th goal of the season as the Phoenix Coyotes  edged the Los Angeles Kings in a physical battle at the Staples Center.

With the victory, the Coyotes improved to 7-1-1 in their last nine games and pulled even with the Kings for seventh place in the Western Conference. The pair is just four points behind the Pacific Division-leading San Jose Sharks.

The NHL’s First Star of the Week, Smith responded from his 38-save effort in a shutout of the Chicago Blackhawks by handcuffing the Kings.

Smith secured his fourth blanking of the season and 15th career by stopping 11 shots in the first period, eight in the second and nine in the third. Smith also improved to 7-2-1 in his career versus Los Angeles.

Vrbata finally broke through after Kings defenseman Jack Johnson was serving a delay of game penalty.

With 4:01 left in the second period, Vrbata accepted a cross-ice feed from Ray Whitney and wired a shot from the right faceoff circle past All-Star Jonathan Quick. The tally was Vrbata’s fifth in nine contests.

Quick finished with 20 saves for the Kings, who fell to 2-4-1 in their last seven games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The teams waged a physical battle in the first period, with three fights and two roughing penalties to highlight a scoreless session. … Whitney, who saw his eight-game point streak come to an end in the team’s last contest, had an assist on Vrbata’s goal.

Kings Fight Ducks for Playoff Spot!

March 31st, 2011

It is an exciting time in sports rivalries! Longtime enemies the L.A. Kings are fighting puck and stick for the playoff spot and their biggest contender? You guessed it; the Anaheim Ducks! The Kings have enjoyed a phenomenal season thus far with just enough losses to keep gripping on the edges of their stadium seats. There are currently five teams vying for playoff spots; two of which are our NHL Los Angeles teams!

Thus far the Kings have had a season of 44 wins to 26 losses. The Ducks have enjoyed 44 wins to 28 losses but in their defense have played more games. Now, with just ten days to go in the in the regular season, the contenders have it down to the wire. The Kings get ready to face Vancouver tonight after which they will have only five games remaining. Meanwhile the Ducks have just five games left as well; of which the Kings and Ducks last two games of the 2010-2011 NHL Regular seasons are against one another. The last week of the season is always the most chaotic- ten games are on simultaneously tonight alone. No other week in NHL is as nail biting as coming down to the wire for who are the final candidates.

The Kings have so far been active since 197 and since then have won no Stanley Cups. They have won just one Division Championship and one Conference Championship. The Anaheim Ducks are a much newer team, founded in 1993, and have won two Conference Championships, a Division Championship, as well as a Stanley Cup. The odds, if based on history, lean far into the Ducks favor. However, as of today the five teams in consideration for the 2010-2011 NHL Playoff’s are the Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars, Chicago Blackhawk’s and the Nashville Predators. The odds for the Kings have never felt so good. Tonight’s game between the Kings and Vancouver is one you don’t want to miss for it’s outcome will weigh heavily in on the King’s likelihood of making it to the playoff’s.
