Eric Bledsoe 2013 Slam Dunk Contest

Eric Bledsoe to participate in Dunk Contest during the All Star weekend

Los Angeles will have another representative during the All Star weekend. Eric Bledsoe will travel alongside with his teammates Chris Paul and Blake Griffin to participate in the Slam Dunk Contest. The league has officially announced the names of the participants for the 2013 Slam Dunk Contest and the young guard from Kentucky will try to impress the crowd with his dunking skills and his athletic abilities.
The other contestants will be Gerald Green from the Golden State Warriors, Terrence Ross from the Toronto Raptors, James White from the New York Knicks, Jeremy Evans from the Utah Jazz and Kenneth Faried from the Denver Nuggets. From a first glimpse at the names on the table one could say that it should be a really spectacular and powerful contest. We’ve seen some great in-game slams from all of these players during this season.

Regarding Bledsoe, apart from winning his NBA All-Rookie Second Team back in 2011, it will be his first chance to win an individual title and also a chance to feel some of the pace of the NBA All Star game. He surely deserves to be there and in fact he has been one of the most enjoying players to watch this season, not only because of his dunks, but also because of the continuing improvement of his game. Many have stated that Bledsoe is a young star rising and the truth is that during Chris Paul’s absence he’s playing like one. Entering the Slam Dunk Contest will be a great experience for him and despite the great opponents he’ll face, let’s all that he brings home a trophy.

Bledsoe is the shortest amongst all the 6 competitors and this might actually be an advantage because both judges and the crowd really like it when short players can lift and deliver amazing dunks, equal or even better than the taller ones. What Bledsoe lacks in height he certainly gains in athleticism and jumping ability and he has all the potential to win it all.

2013 NBA All Star Game will Feature four from Los Angeles

January 20th, 2013
4 NBA All Stars from Los Angeles

4 NBA All Stars from Los Angeles

After a non-surprising fan voting for the 2013 All Star game in Houston starting on February the 15th, the Western all-stars feature two players from each LA team; Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant from the Lakers and Chris Paul alongside Blake Griffin from the Clippers.

Kobe will record his 15th straight All Star appearance, all as a starter, while in the meantime he leads the votes overall for the third time in his career. This is well deserved by him despite for the Lakers being just 11th in the West. The 34-year veteran superstar is leading the league in scoring with 30 PPG and also is also shooting a career high 48% from the field this season.

Also at guard Chris Paul will make his appearance as a starter for the 4th time in his career, his sixth time generally as an all-star. Paul has been the leader of his team this season and has managed to change the whole picture of the Clippers together with Blake Griffin and the rest of the crew. He is averaging 17PPG and also almost 10 assists and he has provided some huge games for his team, lifting LA over tough opponents. His presence and his basketball IQ is what makes him so special, as he has the unique ability to make every teammate look better, a skill that only a few players in the entire NBA history possessed. Paul had a tough competition this season with Russel Westbrook for the starting point guard role, but managed to finish ahead from the Thunder’s star at votes.

At center we find Dwight Howard, his seventh straight All-Star appearance and his sixth as a starter. Although his team has not had a rather successful season till now, the monster center is putting huge numbers almost every game in rebounds and field goal percentage. He is averaging almost 18 points per game, 13 rebounds (first in the league) and 2.5 blocks. Even with some ups and downs in his performance, Howard is still considered to be one of the most, not to say the most complete players down the block and his starter role is well deserved.

Blake Griffin will also start for his 2nd time in an All-Star game, his third appearance overall. He is averaging 18 points on a 53% shooting from the field and also 8 rebounds per game. His has provided some huge games this season for the Clippers and also boosted the team’s 17-game winning streak that broke the franchise record. Apart from all the numbers and the stats, Griffin might be one of the strongest and most enjoying players to watch in the entire league, with all the dunks and alley-hoops his putting down.

A huge game is coming ahead for the LA Clippers next Tuesday, on January the 22nd . They host the Western Conference leading team (record-wise), the Oklahoma City Thunder. It will be playoff-type game. In fact, these teams are the two favorites as the finalists on the Western Conference, so it will be no surprise to see Chis Paul, Blake Griffin and their company fight against Kevin Durant and Russel Westbrook for a chance to compete for ring.

It will be the second meeting between these two teams. Last time, the Thunder managed to escape with a close win at overtime, 117-111, but can they repeat? Also, the biggest question most people might have is which team can actually dethrone the Miami Heat and win the championship this season. The Clips and the Thunder are the two best teams in the West and also have the two best records in the entire league respectively.

Chris Paul has really lifted up his game during the last weeks and he is getting the help he needs from almost every teammate. He has missed three consecutive games due to a bruised right kneecap, but he will be ready for this derby, even sooner. Griffin and Crawford have proven to be the main supporters for Paul, but in general, Coach Vinnie Del Negro has just too many weapons he can use with effectiveness. Can the Thunder last and prove that they have matured enough to win a championship, after last year’s demolition in the finals by the Heat?
Well, this game will answer a lot of such questions regarding the top teams in the West and will show which one is more ready and complete. Apart from the ranking boost the winner may get, the momentum gained will most probably be the number one factor coming into this game. Both teams need this win. It is predicted to be a spectacular game with lots of tension and some great performances, with so much star power on court.

Staples Center will be rocking for this one of the Clippers biggest home games of the season.

Could Eric Bledsoe be a starter in some NBA teams?

January 16th, 2013
Eric Bledsoe LA Clippers

LA Clippers Eric Bledsoe

Despite his youth, Eric Bledsoe has proven that he is a top caliber point guard. He was selected at the 18th spot during the 2010 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder and was traded right away to the Clippers. Judging from the outcome, LA should be glad to land a player like Bledsoe.

He never really had a true chance proving his potential, but even off the bench, one could say that he can become one of the best point guards in the league. After all, the league lacks of true point guards that can set up plays and find ways to make things easier for their teammates.

Although Bledsoe might not be the ideal pass-first playmaker, his quickness, his terrific ball handling to go along with his long range shooting ability can make him a valuable member in any team in the NBA. The playing style of most teams has changed drastically during the past years. Today, we don’t see the old-fashioned teams, when the playmaker advanced the ball, the guards were on the wings shooting or penetrating and the centers filled the middle. With so much talent on the floors of the NBA, we can see many times Power Forwards playing as point guards setting up plays and centers hitting threes. That’s why any player must possess a variety of skills to become successful and have a chance to compete against the others. Eric Bledsoe is surely one of them.

Because of the injuries of teammates Chris Paul and Chauncey Billups, Bledsoe had the chance to start for two consecutive games and guess what, he recorder season highs. It’s clear that Coach Vinnie Del Negro shouldn’t worry so much about his injured players as long as Bledsoe is available. At least he shouldn’t rush them back. When asked about the possibility of starting for an NBA team, the third year guard out of Kentucky replied: “I’m just focused on winning and learning how to win right now.” It’s so important for him and his maturity to be alongside veteran point guards Chris Paul and Chauncey Billups. Playing with them every day, even at practice, is the best school for any young player to improve his skills. Plus, we know that both Paul and Billups are like on court assistant coaches.
So the answer to the question about Bledsoe possibly starting for an NBA team is surely affirmative. The future is projected bright for Eric, as soon as he manages to retain his improving performance and stays healthy. But even at this stage of his career, he could easily start for many NBA teams, not to say above half of them.

Should Rudy Gay be a target for the LA Clippers?

January 16th, 2013
Rudy Gay Los Angeles Clippers

Rudy Gay to the Clippers?

It’s no secret that every time the trade deadline approaches, teams get more aggressive pursuing players and contriving trades. This year is no exception to that rule. One of the most discussed possible movements currently is the trade of star forward Rudy Gay. He is an all-star caliber player with great athletic and physical abilities and a true scorer. He is also only 26 years old and really has the potential to upgrade any team he will fit into. But should the LA Clippers consider making an offer for him?

Well, first of all Rudy Gay will be expensive to acquire and to maintain. He is currently earning $16,5 million for this season and he is owed a total of $53 million for the next three seasons. We are just about $1 million under the luxury tax, which means the cap space needs to be cleared for Gay’s arrival. Possibly, in a trade, Eric Bledsoe, Caron Butler and one other player from the Clips could be packaged, so we can land Gay in LA. Is it worth it?

Well, as great as a player Gay is, he surely will need the ball in his hands a lot of time. He is certainly an upgrade at Small Forward and he can easily create his own shot, but does this team lack of a scorer? Also, Gay is an excellent rebounder for a small forward, averaging 6.4 RPG for his career, but when it comes for defense, you can’t state that he has a similar performance, despite his athletic skills.

In my opinion, with the great balance we’ve seen from our guys and with Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and Jamal Crawford on the team, I would had to think twice before answering. It may sound great having Rudy Gay on our roster, but if you think of what we will lose in order to get him, then it most probably wouldn’t be a great idea to run for the trade. It’s not only about the players we’ll lose, it’s about the chemistry we have already built and that’s why we perform so well almost every night. We are in the best position since our franchise was founder. A winning team shouldn’t be changed.

Chris Paul as the No1 MVP candidate

January 13th, 2013
Chris Paul MVP

Chris Paul LA Clippers NO 1 MVP Candiate

Chris Paul is currently leading the race to the 2013 season MVP title and it’s no surprise. It’s not only about the stats and the scores he provides. It’s bigger. It’s about the impact he had and continues to have in the Clippers organization. It’s about him providing solutions each night and playing like an on-court coach, making his teammates better. Team success comes through individual effort and each member of the Clippers team knows that well. This great performance and the winning record our team has, exposes Paul’s impact even further. Let’s take a look at what he has achieved up to now this season.

Number wise, the five-time all-star point guard has had an excellent season, averaging almost 17 PPG, 9.7 assists and 2.6 steals. In fact he ranks first in the league in steals and trails only Rajon Rondo in assists. He is the only player in the entire league to average at least 15 points, nine assists and two steals per game. His numbers went up during the historic 17-game winning streak of LA, but even after that he continued to deliver huge games. In fact he dished a season-high 16 assist during last week’s win against the Mavs.

But believe me his value goes well beyond just numbers and stats. Some things in basketball can’t be counted by numbers, but those who watch and know about fundamentals, can understand the difference between a good player and a great player. Paul is surely one great player. The way he sets up his team, making plays for his teammates and easing up things for the rest of his team is a unique charisma that only a few players in the entire NBA possess. His Basketball IQ and his awareness on offense and on D is what complete the picture of a true superstar and team leader. Most of his teammates express their admiration to Paul’s performance and presence on the court. Some even compare him to Jason Kidd during his legendary days.

One thing is for certain. The LA Clippers are not the joke they used to be, even after the acquisition of Blake Griffin. Our entire organization has done a terrific job and our team has all the potential to drive us to the NBA finals and even perhaps celebrate our first Championship. Things might go even better and Chris Paul is the one who can lead us all the way to the top. He well deserves the MVP award, judging from his up to now performance and impact to our team.

Jamal Crawford and his GQ interview

January 12th, 2013
Jamal Crawford LA Clip's

Jamal Crawford Los Angeles Clippers

It’s no secret that Jamal Crawford had a roller coaster career up to this point. He has changed 5 teams before landing to LA and has been coached by 16 different ones. Is LA his final destination? Well, depending on what he confessed at an interview for GQ magazine, the Clippers are surely the best team he has ever played in. Now, with a 28-8, he can surely be happy about his choice to join the Clippers and seems to have found the perfect role in the rotation. That at least how he sounded during his interview, stating that he playing with the Clips is the most fun since high school. He pointed out how well bonded the whole team is with each other and they prove it every day with their performance. Despite the newcomers this season, the Clips, with the assistance of Head Coach Vinny Del Negro, have managed to find the perfect role for each member of their roster. In fact they let everyone do what he does best, even if that is coming off the bench to provide 5 vital minutes or starting and carrying the team on his shoulders.

Asked about how it is to play alongside Chris Paul, Crawford really glorified him. He stated that Paul is a true playmaker and has the unique ability to make everyone else on the floor better, because of his panoramic vision and understanding of the game. Also, when asked about the upcoming return of Grant Hill and Chauncey Billups and the possibility of the chemistry to break, he stated that he believes exactly the opposite, meaning that those additions will make the team lethal.

Crawford was never a true starter. In fact he looks like he is born to be a sixth man and that’s when he reaches his best performance, off the bench. That’s what he does also this year and he has managed to be the team’s third leader in scoring. The most important thing is that the coaching stuff has understood his ideal role –and not only his- and can get the most out of him. That, along with many other key factors keep the Clippers on winning track and really put their names on the championship contention this season.

How can Grant Hill help the LA Clippers?

January 9th, 2013

LA Clippers Grant Hill

After missing the whole start of this season, Grant Hill is finally approaching his debut with the Los Angeles Clippers uniform. He was pursued by many teams during this off-season, after his contract with the Suns expired and the Clippers were the most fortunate of all, managing to land the 39-year old veteran to their roster.

Despite his age, Hill is considered to be one of the best veterans in his position and can surely help our team off the bench. His numbers last year proved that he can perform really well, even at the age of 39 and the surprising stat is that his minutes didn’t drop last season. Our up to now reserves performance has been terrific and it’s a fact that Coach Vinnie Del Negro has managed to balance the minutes between the bench and the starters perfectly. We are getting the most out of our bench players and it’s getting better game by game. Just imagine the power we will have when Hill and also Billups return. You can even say that the slow improvement of Odom is noticeable.

Well, of course, with Grant Hill stepping into the power rotation, some of the other players will see some minutes cut off, but I am not at all worried about that. Coach Del Negro has proven to us that he can handle this exceptionally and I am sure he will find the best solution as soon as Hill feels comfortable with his game again.

Hill participated in the Clips practice after a really long time and answered with a “maybe” when asked if he was going to dress up for tonight’s game against the Mavs. The normal thing for him is that the coaching staff will utilize him step by step, most probably letting him play only a few minutes these first games. The last thing we need is getting him injured as we approach the playoffs. However, he should see some minutes and get the feeling back because he can be a great solution during the tough matches at the playoffs. His experience and understanding of the game are superb and he can also play bigger than his position. We will have to see how he responds, but he has proven that he can defend even opponents playing the 4. That should give our Coach the opportunity to mix the rotations as he judges better.

Either if we see him today or not, Grant Hill is a valuable piece in our roster and I think he will prove it come playoff time.

Can Lebron James and the Miami Heat win another Championship this year?

January 8th, 2013
Heat Championship Rings

Heat Championship Rings

After a tough first 9 seasons in the NBA, with lots of criticism, lots of hate and love for his face, Lebron James finally redeemed himself last season winning the long-awaited Championship Ring. Can he really do it again this year?

Whether you hate Lebron, love him or simply don’t care about him –that would be curious- you have to admit that he is the best player currently in the NBA. I am not talking about best scorer, best passer or best rebounder or even the most clutch player. I am talking about doing all these together at a superior level, non-human, video-game like. Even if you were a tough NBA defender it’s almost impossible to stop a 6-8” body-frame weighting 250 lbs coming towards you at full speed. Combine it with top-class agility and shooting stroke and you have an ultimate weapon at your arsenal. I mean, what can’t Lebron really do? The most usual answer to this question until last June was that he can’t win a championship. Or some jokes about giving him a dollar and him giving you ¾ back. Well, all that has now changed, at least at some point. It’s always natural for a champion to ease the tension towards himself and that happened also with Lebron. Especially when this summer we all witnessed the Dwight Howard saga that finally ended up with him being traded to the Lakers. In fact the Lakers took a lot of the media attention and the criticism that Miami and Lebron had last year. It seems that together with power always comes responsibility and expectations for the greatest achievements. That’s what the Lakers face this year, they are in the tough position the Heat were last year. They are in a win now mode and not only because of getting 4 former all stars in their starting lineup, but also because everybody knows that in order to compete in the NBA, you need to be fresh (and young enough). The Lakers don’t have the luxury to wait a year or two like Miami did. On the other hand, the Lakers have already won several championships and the fans may not be so championship-hungry.

Back to Lebron and Miami, though, could they really make it to the finals again and win their second in a row? Only the Lakers have achieved to win two or more in a row the past decade. But the question might be which team can beat Miami in 7 games? As they’ve proved last year, they can do well even with tall teams managing well their weakness at frontcourt. They found the way to make the most out of their roster. What they wisely did last year for example against the Thunder at the finals, was that they switched Shane Battier at the four. That changed the game, because it forced Serge Ibaka, the monster blocker, run all the court around to chase Battier and defend him shooting the three. So that left the inside space clear Lebron and Wade. This year, they’ve added also Ray Allen, who needs no comments about his three pointers and Rashard Lewis, plus they’ve kept all the valuable members at their team. And with Lebron having another super season this far, they look like they are eligible to repeat. Let’s wait and see how things go for Miami and all the other true Championship contenders.
