Torii Hunter is one of the great players in the world of baseball.  He is currently the right fielder for Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  Born on July 18, 1975, Torii Hunter from Pine Bluff Arkansas was an active baseball player during his student days.  In fact, he was selected as the Twins’ first-round pick in 1993 out of high school.  He was a successful player and was named Twins’ Minor League Player of the Week and Player of the Month.

Torii Hunter is a cousin of a former MLB outfielder Choo Freeman.  Hunter lives during the off-season in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex suburb of Prosper, Texas.  Hunter led the Twins in at bats, home runs and outfield assists with 14 – tied for second best in the league, in 2001.  Moreover, he was also second in RBI and total bases, leading the team to their first winning season since 1992; he led all major league center fielders in range factor 3.29, and was also named Best Defensive Outfielder in the American League by Baseball America.  As his success continued, a new beginning was set for Hunter as he turned down a three-year, $45,000,000 deal in August of 2007 from the Twins and signed a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim worth $90,000,000; replacing Gary Matthews Jr. as the everyday center fielder.

Hunter was also noted as rank 44th on the list of Sporting News’ 50 greatest current players in baseball.  On June 13, 2009, Hunter hit three home runs in one game against the San Diego Padres and it was the first time in his career he had achieved the feat with Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  Hunter remains successful with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and even won his ninth consecutive Gold Glove Award for the outfield as announced on November 10, 2009.In addition to that, it was announced two days later that he won a silver slugger award; he batted .299 with 22 homers and 90 RBI’s.  Hunter collected his 1000th RBI off of Joakim Soria that was also a go-ahead two run home run to give the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim a 9-8 advantage.  It was a game which the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim finally won 10-8 and Hunter was the 268th player to collect 1,000 RBI.

As the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim continues to flourish, Torii Hunter will always be a part of the Angels’ journey in the world of Major League Baseball.

LA Angels 2012 Team Preview

February 18th, 2012

Baseball season will soon be here and we thought it’d be nice to bring to you, every Tuesday and Thursday, a preview from each team in the NL and AL West; culminating in a divisional breakdown and projected front-runners. So without any delay, here’s a look at the 2012 Los Angeles Angels. Oh and if you want NL and AL East projections, you’re on the wrong website, son. Turn to any sports TV to get that stuff.

Infield

In 2011, the Angels were a decent offensive team.

In 2012, they should be a great offensive team.

The addition of Albert Pujols is huge. If he stays healthy, he’s going to give the Angels a .300-plus average, 40 or so home runs and well over 100 RBI. The Angels haven’t had a hitter like Pujols since Vlad Guerrero was in his heyday.

There are no true superstars to be found elsewhere in the Angels’ lineup, but as a whole, it’s pretty deep. The Angels will have to live with low batting averages from Torii Hunter and Vernon Wells, but they’ll at least hit for power. Howie Kendrick is as solid as they come when he’s healthy, and Alberto Callaspo and Erick Aybar swing quality sticks as well.

The question is what are the Angels going to do about the logjam they have at the DH spot? The Angels are hoping Mark Trumbo will be able to transition over to third base, but he seems to be a much better fit at DH. The trouble is that they also have Kendrys Morales and Bobby Abreu to worry about. They’re going to need to get at-bats, so Mike Scioscia better get ready for some lineup juggling this season.

Honestly, who else could it be but Albert Pujols?

How good is Pujols? He hit .299 with 37 homers and 99 RBI in 2011, and that was his worst season of his career.

The Outfield

Vernon Wells was simply amazing in his first season after he came over in a trade from the Toronto Blue Jays. He hit 25 home runs, drove in 66 runs and he did it all despite only playing in 131 games. The Angels couldn’t have done it without him.

Pitching:

The top three in the rotation, Jered Weaver, Dan Haren, and Ervin Santana had a combined 2.99 era and 45 wins. The Angels found a nice surprise from Jerome Williams as he owned a 2.31 era as a starter and 3.68 era overall.

The Angels didn’t just make one splash on the hitters side, they balanced it out by adding the top MLB pitcher on the market in CJ Wilson. They signed Wilson to a five-year, $77.5M contract in December. Wilson was the ace of the Rangers the past two years going 31-15 3.15 era. The Angels will have a total of four top pitchers in their rotation, instantly catapulting them into discussion of who has the best pitching staff along with the Phillies and Giants.

The additions of Albert Pujols and CJ Wilson immediately has the Texas Rangers looking over their shoulder as the Angels look to overthrow the two-time defending AL West Champs. A playoff berth for the Angels should be in the cards. The combination of hitting and pitching could potentially bring the Angels back to the World Series, where they won it all a decade ago. The season would be branded unsuccessful if they fail to secure a spot in the playoffs resulting in the offseason spending spree of $331.5M being all for naught.

Final words:

The Angels are a rock-solid team. There are better offenses and better fielding teams out there, but the Angels have one of the best rotations in the majors, and they have more than enough offense to support it. They’re going to win a lot of games this season.

Los Angeles Angels = Offseason Noise

January 20th, 2012

The Clippers were not the only team in Los Angeles to land major acquisitions over the offseason.   Similar to the Los Angeles Clippers, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim made major offseason noise.    The only difference is that they did not have to use any trade bait to land their big catches.

For months, the race for Albert Pujols was a two-team race between the St Louis Cardinals and the rags-to riches Miami Marlins.   Having locked in Jose Reyes, Mark Buerhle and Heath Bell, the Marlins would arguably have had the greatest offseason in the history of sports if they landed Pujols.   However, the Marlins were not willing to give Pujols a no-trade clause, an obvious dealbreaker for the Pujols camp.    One cannot blame the Cardinals for being unwilling to hamper their payroll on one man after an incredible World Series run.   With or without Pujols, they have a solid team and could utilize that free cap space to shore up any weak points.

Like a thief in the night, the Angels snatched Albert Pujols via a 10 year, 254 million dollar contract with a much desired no-trade clause.     And the shopping spree wasn’t over yet.    Later on in the day, the Angels snatched Rangers ace C.J Wilson with a 5 year, 77.5 million contract.

Without a doubt, Dec 8th 2011 had to be one of the five greatest days in the history of the Angels.  It was as if actor Christopher Lloyd resumed his role in the Disney film “Angels in the Outfield”.      It’s not every day that a franchise makes a big splash with a potential Hall of Fame slugger (Please don’t let it come out that he did roids!) and a pitching ace.     All of this was accomplished by GM Jerry Dipoto.  In less than 3 months, he’s accomplished more than many GMs in other sports:   Isiah Thomas as the Knicks GM, Matt Millen as Detroit Lions GM:  Kevin McHale as Timberwolves GM.

He’s managed to lock up All-Star 2B Howie Kendrick for the next four years and avoided arbitration with Erik Bybar 3 days ago.

The Angels have a starting rotation that includes:  CJ Wilson, Dan Haren, Ervin Santana and Jared Weaver.    Not too shabby.   However, it’s not always how you start; it’s how you finish games.   Finishing games was a major issue for the Angels last year.   As it stands, the bullpen is a major question mark.   Besides the signing of veteran relief pitcher Latroy Hawkins, little has been done to address that question mark into a clear answer.    The Angels blew more saves than any other teamin the MLB last year.  Jordan Walden was Mr. Unreliable.     One has to ponder whether the Angels made a significant boo-boo by not investing in the bullpen enough over this offseason.   With all the moves made, it’s not like they can do much about it now.    They will have to revisit this issue at the July trade deadline.

Overall, they’ve landed one of the greatest hitters of our time.  A man who may be headed right for Barry Bond’s all time-HR record.    Conventional wisdom may see a 10 year contract with a no-trade clause for a 32 year old slugger as risky, but Albert Pujols has been in Beast mode ever since he’s entered the league and shows no signs of slowing down.   Now that he’s in the AL, he will certainly become a DH in the very near future in spite of the fact that he fields his position well.

A stellar offseason has put the Angels as a contender for the 2012 season.

Look out, Texas Rangers.

So after a game or a concert, there are plenty of things to do in the Downtown LA area.

January 10th, 2012

Since Los Angeles concerts and games get out roughly around the same time, the list is going to apply for food/drink options, then some club or bar options. The LA Live area and Staples Center as you may know are across the street from one another, so getting to any of these places will be from the same area. Directions are by car.

LA Live Area)

Yard House – This place has a HUGE selection of beers on tap. From Tangerine Hef to a standard Bud Light, you can get beers in large yard size glasses, also food is served. Prices are moderate and it is usually busy on weekends.

ESPN Zone – For the sports fanatic, you could presumably watch the game here if you aren’t at the stadium, there are plenty of TVs, decent bar, with decent food. Its a great place to watch Lakers, Clippers, LA Kings, Dodgers, Angels or other sports games with friends.

Conga Room – Cool for drinks/dancing, its upstairs in the LA Live area near Nokia. Will get packed weekends and after concerts. Its a Latin themed bar, you need to be dressy, you can’t wear jerseys or baggy clothes, they are strict on the dress code.

Lucky Strike – Not just regular crappy bowling, but upscale bowling. This location in particular has a much bigger bar than other Lucky Strikes. They even have bottle service (not worth it). You’ll need reservations on weekends so if you time it well it could work. The bowling is expensive, but its great for a group atmosphere (mainly because of price). The drink prices aren’t bad for your location, its dark inside, but overall fun, I’ve been here a couple times and it was a good time, service usually sucks, get your drinks at the bar.

Club Nokia – The club basically inside of the Nokia Theatre. Some tickets will give you access to it. It is a very cool place inside, I went after a show and it was fairly busy. The style is ultra-modern, again you need to dress for this place. Think of the movie Tron in Los Angeles, modern.

Katsu-ya Sushi – Somewhat pricey and delicious upscale sushi. You won’t find a classic California Roll, but you’ll be very happy you tried it. Menu is shown up front, it is very much worth it. I’ve been to the one closer to me, not this particular location, but its about the same menu.
Downtown)

Big Wangs – Chain place, great for cheap wings and a great selection of beers that will rotate specials throughout the night. They have karaoke some nights as well. Good atmosphere, casual, service pretty good and not expensive. (Grand Avenue, 5 minutes from LA Live)

The Edison – Serious dress code, but basically a club/bar that is in an old power plant (hence, the Edison), expensive, but always packed and always a good time, artsy feel. (2nd and Main, 8 minutes)

The Standard Rooftop Bar – Not sure who you’re going with, but if its a date, this is awesome. Atop The Standard Hotel (Where they filmed Get Him to the Greek), gives you an awesome view of surrounding LA, its expensive, wear something warm during the winter, it can get nippy. They also added a biergarten recently for German beer samples and sausages etc.(South Flower and 6th, 8 minutes)

Library Bar – Very cool decor, cheaper option than The Standard which is nearby. Lots of people come here after work, so very suit-like feel. Big selection of mixed drinks that are strong and good. I went here on a weekday, so the calibur of busy may not be typical, but it was pretty busy. (8th street)

Hotel Figueroa Lounge (The Fig) – Cool lounge at the base of the hotel. I’ve been here during the day, sadly not at night, but it is a warm atmosphere, had a typical drink so I can’t rave about it. It is right near Staples Center, great location and if you get too wasted, just book a room (not the cheapest). (Figueroa Street)

Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles – No bar here, just delicious chicken n’ waffles. Good if you have a food craving after a show or game. Its less than 15 minutes from Staples. Very cheap, very good, no fancy dress code, closes at midnight if I am not mistaken. (Pico and La Brea, just take Pico, west, 15 minutes or less)

The Gorbals – A little different, this place is for food and its open late, they have a bar as well. This place will be a bit hard to find, its inside of a building which appears to be pretty shady and it kind of it. Inside try the matozah balls wrapped with bacon or the latkas, both are delicious. The drinks are moderately priced. The chef won Top Chef apparently. I was here on New Years, music was good, service good as well. (501 Spring Street, remember, its inside of a building, bottom floor, 10 minutes, considering you’ll get lost)

Broadway Bar – This is from a recommendation of a friend who lives right in downtown. 2 story place, good happy hour prices, would be good after a game. Dress code, but I’m told they wont hassle, but sports gear is a no-no. outside has a patio, good beer prices as has an old feel to it. (Broadway, 5 minutes)

Wurstküche – German Beerhall/Sausage place. Really cool, huge selection of beers, usually very busy. You can try rattlesnake and many other types of pretty odd sausages. German and Belgium beers on tap, picnic style tables medium price (E 3rd Street, 10 minutes)

Seven Grand – Another recommendation. This is a whiskey bar but serves a nice selection of beer as well. Casual dress code, the price can be a little high depending on what you get. Amazing atmosphere, great staff, amazing selection, very fitting for the area. Its upstairs with a patio, pool tables. (Seven and Grand, clever right? 8 minutes)

The Pantry – Food only, 24/7 classic restaurant, been open forever, they’ve never closed their doors. Cash only, very good food any time of the day (or night). (South Figueroa, 2 minutes)

We also stock tickets for all Nokia Theater events as well.

Huge day for the Los Angeles Angels

December 8th, 2011

Three-time NL MVP Albert Pujols agreed Thursday to a $254 million, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels.

Pujols’ contract, which is subject to a physical, is the second-highest in baseball history and only the third to break the $200 million barrier, following Alex Rodriguez’s $252 million, 10-year deal with Texas before the 2001 season and A-Rod’s $275 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees before the 2008 season.

“This is a monumental day for Angel fans and I could not be more excited,” owner Arte Moreno said in a statement.

Los Angeles Angels Tickets are onsale now.
