Can the Clippers tame the Grizzlies at the Staples Center?

April 20th, 2013
Clippers Vs Grizzlies

Clippers Vs Grizzlies Match Up

With their win against the Sacramento Kings in the season finale the Los Angeles Clippers secured the 4th seed in the Western Conference. They also won the home-court advantage for their first round opponents, the Memphis Grizzlies.

This was the ideal way for LA to finish the regular season, the best in their franchise history. Everything is set right now for that success to continue to the postseason. The Clippers now have their whole roster – finally – available as the Playoffs begin.

Chauncey Billups recently returned to the lineup. With his experience he can be a great factor to complement the star duo of Chris Paul and Blake Griffin and assist on making plays. Throughout the season Vinnie Del Negro’s team has shown that it has a perfect balance between the first unit and the reserves. Players like Jamal Crawford, Caron Butler and Matt Barnes can provide the veteran presence needed in any team when the ball gets heavier and every detail counts. This is another essential factor that could make the difference between a win and a loss in the Playoffs.

In the first round the Clips will face the Memphis Grizzlies. The two teams played against each other again in the first leg last year. That time the Grizzlies had the home court advantage but LA won the series. Also, they just recently beat Memphis during their latest regular season meeting, on the 13th of April. With this win the Clippers sealed the season series, 3-1.

Things now are a bit different from last year for both teams. First of all, the Grizzlies changed the core of their team with the movement of Rudy Gay. Especially the offense has shaken up after that trade. Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph take now more load in scoring, supported by Conley.

Also, the Clippers look like a much more complete and mature team this season. They were dangerous last year. However, this season LA has proven to be lethal when they are able to reach their top level of performance and retaining their fast-paced offense. Chris Paul is having one of his most productive seasons of his career, not statistically but in the aspects of leading his team and making things easier for his teammates. His matchup against Mike Conley will be key for both teams and could turn the scale in one team’s favor. LA’s frontcourt will also have to play hard against Gasol and Randolph and limit their chances for easy hoops.

There’s no doubt that Clippers fans should be excited. Finally they have the chance to celebrate their first Division Title and see their team finish in the top 4 in the Western Conference. Also, this could be one of the few seasons in franchise history that there are vital chances for LA to win a Championship. Their Playoff course shall determine if they are deservedly considered as the bosses of the City of Angels or their success this season was circumstantial.

The Clippers and Grizzlies tipoff at 7:30 tonight at the Staples Center.

Hockey coming to Dodger Stadium?

April 18th, 2013
Ducks Vs Kings at Dodger Stadium

Ducks Vs Kings at Dodger Stadium

Due to the strong success of its annual Winter Classic outdoor games the National Hockey League has decided to expand the number of outdoor games during the upcoming season. One of the most fascinating matchups will be a Dodger Stadium game between the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks.  The game, set for January 25, 2014 will be part of a larger two-week celebration of hockey at Dodgers Stadium.  The six outdoor games scheduled, in addition to the annual Winter Classic, will be part of the larger Hockey Day in America event.

When the rumors first circulated that Dodger Stadium would feature a game star Kings defenseman Drew Doughy was initially skeptical of how the LA climate would be able to support an outdoor ice surface.

According to Doughty, via LA Kings Insider:

“I don’t understand how that would work,” Doughty told reporters. “Isn’t it too hot?

According to experts the NHL will utilize technology first used during an outdoor game in Las Vegas.  The Kings also played in the Vegas game in 1991 and despite temperatures that reached 85 degrees the ice held up. The game will be played at night to mitigate temperature issues.  Over the past several years the league has perfected the technology behind their portable refrigeration equipment they use for the outdoor games.  The average nightly low for January 25th in LA is 49 degrees so ice conditions should not be much of an issue. The game will be played prior to the NHL going on break for the Winter Olympics, so LA hockey fans will be treated to the rivalry game with all the top stars like Jonathon Quick, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Doughty.

The game at Dodger Stadium will be followed by a handful of additional matchups across the country over the following month, including two games at Yankee Stadium and a very compelling Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Chicago Blackhawks game at Soldier Field in Chicago. The two Yankee Stadium games will feature New York based teams during the week leading up to next year’s Super Bowl. The game at Dodger Stadium will reportedly be able to seat as many as 70,000 people and should be one of the hottest tickets in town for local fans of hockey, as well as hockey fans traveling in from around the country.

Dwight Howard and Lakers seem ready for playoff challenge

March 21st, 2013
Dwight Howard

Is Dwight Howard ready to compete for a championship?

Despite the loss to the Phoenix Suns, there’s barely a single Lakers fan that can be disappointed by the team’s performance turnaround after the NBA All-Star break. Apart from Kobe, who has been most consistent player of the team throughout this season, Dwight Howard has also managed to improve his game on both ends of the floor. He has been a huge factor that allowed the LA Lakers to save this season.

It’s no secret that both the fans and the team’s officials in the City of Angels were disappointed by the performance of D-12 during the first half of the season. You can blame his adjustment period or the fact that he was coming off a severe back injury. One thing is for sure: Howard was not the dominant player in the block the Lakers expected him to be.

However, he drastically changed his pace both on the defensive end and of offense. Especially on defense, the impact of the three-time Defensive Player of the Year has been big no matter the opponent. When he is not denying shots he is most likely to change them and that’s of course if the opponents find the courage to even attack the Lakers’ paint. This became more noticeable due to the constant and long lasting injuries of his teammate big man, Pau Gasol. D-12 had to step up and take more responsibilities on both ends of the court.
Offensively, Howard has also improved his performance. He is driving stronger to the basket after the pick-and-rolls and he is more efficient when he catches the ball close to the hoop. During the last 10 games, Howard is averaging 17.4 Points per Game on 48% shooting from the field and meantime grabbing a bit over 15 rebounds. He also has almost 3 blocks per game.

Howard’s performance boost comes along with a general improvement to the Lakers as a whole. LA is now showing that the original purpose of this team was to be successful in the post-season. Of course the Lakers didn’t target to finish 8th in the West when the season started. Nevertheless, when Steve Nash and Howard took their talents to LA to join Kobe and Gasol, there was just to one goal, to win another Championship. This team is in a win-now situation. This was the case even at the very beginning of the season and this continues to be their focus. Judging from the aging roster, one could say that this might actually be the last chance for this team to change a ring.

The Lakers have responded well to their first task, to pick up the pace, find ways to win and enter the Playoffs. Nothing’s 100% certain yet, but the fans can be optimistic. The next challenge for them is to put their names as an eligible Championship Contender. In a way they have achieved that, too. They went from a team scratched off the Championship puzzle, to a strong presence in the West. They will now have to fulfill the fans’ expectations.
