Phoenix Suns vs. Golden State Warriors
NBA, Western Conference, Pacific Division
Oracle Arena, Oakland, CA
Monday, February 13th, 2012. 10:30 PM EST

Analysis of the Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns, led by PG Steve Nash, were one of the elite teams in the NBA just a few years ago. Nash and PF Amare Stoudemire were a deadly combo, and the Suns were popular picks to win the West. Now Stoudemire is gone and the other key pieces (outside of Nash) have been traded away. The Suns are starting their rebuilding process, and a 12-15 record in 2012 shows this.

Analysis of the Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors are where the Suns would like to be in 2-3 years. An incredibly young squad with some great pieces built around the draft (mainly), the Warriors have yet to turn their talent into results on the court (going 9-14 on the year so far) but certainly are capable of being on of the better teams in the West given a year or two of experience and one more elite player.

Key Players
Phoenix Suns: Marcin Gortat
The leading scorer, rebounder, and blocks man on the Suns, Gortat will get a favorable matchup against C Andris Biedrins of the Warriors. If Gortat can step up and get 20-15-5 of points, rebounds, and blocks, the Suns will come out of Oakland with a W.

Golden State Warriors: Stephen Curry
Curry, the 3rd year PG out of Davidson, was drafted 8th overall in 2009. If it were done again he’d be a top 5 pick for sure. After missing the start of the season with ankle trouble Curry has played very well, averaging 18 points and 7 assists each game this season. A game where he goes 20-10 against the Suns would really help the Warriors win.

Key Statistics
Rebounds:
Both the Suns and the Warriors are in the bottom 5 in the NBA in rebounding, only pulling down about 41 rebounds a game to the league leading 45. Both squads have an elite big man (Gortat for the Suns, PF David Lee for the Warriors) that can really pull down the ball when needed, and the team that has the rebounding edge in this one will come out on top.

Prediction
The Warriors are one of the higher scoring teams in the league and also have their own version of the big 3, Curry, Lee, and SG Monta Ellis. The Suns counter with Nash, one of the best point guards in the history of the NBA. While this game could swing either way for a variety of reasons, I think that you have to take the big 3 over the elite 1 in this situation.

Prediction = Golden State Warriors: 110 – Phoenix Suns: 90

The Jeremy Lin Phenomenon

February 10th, 2012
Jeremy Lin New York Knicks

Jeremy Lin New York Knicks

Odds are if you are a casual basketball fan you have heard the name Jeremy Lin a lot in the last week or so.  Let’s be honest though the first time you heard about the new Knicks upstart point guard you had to do a quick Google search on him so you could actively participate in any conversation in regards to him.  It is well chronicled by now that Lin came to the New York Knicks by way of Harvard and more recently by way of being cut by the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets.  All he has done in his 3 games in a Knicks uniform is score 25.3 points per game, dish out 8 assists a game, while logging over 40 minutes in those contests.  Jeremy Lin is the perfect blend of basketball talent, guts, and personality that the Knicks and their fan base have been thirsting for going on 10 plus years now.  Not to mention that the style of play his coach preaches fits his skill set perfectly.  All of these combine to make up the perfect storm that is the Jeremy Lin phenomenon.

Let’s establish one thing, this kid has staying power.  He is not a flash in the pan type player.  I am by no means saying he is going to average 25 and 8 every night, but he has the talent to be an everyday starter in the NBA.  His skill set is such where he will be able to contribute on a consistent basis because his ability to pass, create for others, and shoot make his game much more than someone who may be one dimensional.

To come in and burst on the scene like he has it takes a serious amount of guts as well.  It takes a huge amount of confidence in your ability to come onto maybe the biggest stage in the world, New York City, and not back down from the challenge that comes with being the point guard for the New York Knicks.  In the short time he has been active he makes players around him better and his love of the game is infectious as evident by the overall energy level increase by the team as a whole.

Lin comes to the Knicks when their loyal fan base needs something to latch onto and to have hope in.  They hired a coach whose system heavily revolves around a point guard and the ability of that point guard to penetrate, but were building their team with personnel that did have this essential piece.  This was the sort of great frustration for Knicks fans who have been waiting for over 10 years for something to hope for on the court.  Overnight it seems as the interest in the Knicks on a local and national level is back again thanks to Jeremy Lin.

Another aspect of the Lin phenomenon that cannot be ignored is the valuable vehicle he has the potential to be for the NBA as a whole.  With the retirement of Yao Ming the NBA is desperately seeking another face to promote their product in China and all over Southeast Asia and Lin fits that bill perfectly given he is of Taiwanese decent.

Do yourself a favor if you get the chance and the Knicks are on TV sit down and watch this kid play.  He is someone that old school and new school NBA fans can watch and enjoy alike.  Hopefully for the sake of the Knicks organization, their fans, and the NBA as a whole the Jeremy Lin phenomenon continues to grip us all.

Your NBA Christmas Schedule is set

December 2nd, 2011

The NBA won’t unveil its full revamped 2011-12 schedule until Tuesday, but the league did formally announce its opening day slate. The 2011 NBA Christmas schedule includes five national TV games featuring many of the biggest stars in the game.

  • Boston Celtics at New York Knicks, 12 p.m. ET, TNT. These two teams met in the first round of the NBA playoffs last April, with Boston taking a sweep. The Knicks are looking to add some firepower before the season starts with either Chris Paul or Dwight Howard.
  • Miami Heat at Dallas Mavericks, 2:30 p.m. ET, ABC. NBA Opening day rematch for the 2011 finals. The Christmas gift for the Miami Heat is to get to watch the Mavericks lift the Championship Trophy. Should make for a great game.
  • Chicago Bulls at L.A. Lakers, 5 p.m. ET, ABC. Reigning MVP Derrick Rose will waltz his Bulls into STAPLES Center for the first game of the Mike Brown’ era. It will be the 14th Christmas Day game for the 16 year vet Kobe Bryant.
  • Orlando Magic at Oklahoma City Thunder, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN. The league added the final two games to the schedule since the lockout ended last week. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are great fun to watch, this could be a preview of the Finals if Dwight Howard’s future is still in Orlando.
  • L.A. Clippers at Golden State Warriors, 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. This is the equivalent of a Christmas gift to true heads saddened by the lockout. Oracle Arena is one of the best environments in pro sports, and Blake Griffin is looking to make the top 10 highlight reel on a national level.
