The newest Los Angeles Laker Dwight Howard

Dwight Howard Los Angeles Lakers

Four years ago at the trade deadline, the Los Angeles Lakers made what was considered a blockbuster move — they traded a package centered around Marc Gasol (although at the time we thought it was Kwame Brown) for Pau Gasol. Pairing him with Kobe Bryant led the Lakers to three straight finals and two NBA titles.

After tonight, Pau Gasol may be offensive option No. 4 on the Lakers.

To what is certainly the frustration and consternation of Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and other owners (nice competitive balance), the Lakers have had the best offseason they have had since 1996 (getting Shaquille O’Neal and drafting Kobe Bryant). The Lakers were able to work trades for both point guard Steve Nash and the most dominant center on the planet today, Dwight Howard.

The Lakers are now the team best positioned to challenge the Miami Heat for the NBA title, they can match up in raw talent. And with real strengths at point guard and center — the two weakest links of the Heat — Los Angeles may well be the best team in the NBA.

Acquiring Dwight Howard is another bold move for the Lakers, just what we’ve come to expect from a franchise that measures success in championship rings.

So Howard is coming off back surgery and might not even be ready to start the season? So what? The Lakers don’t do Novembers. The Lakers do Junes. This is who they are.

Stay Tuned, this could be an amazing season in Los Angeles.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (35-21): Andrew Bynum wasn’t around to see the conclusion of the Lakers’ 112-107 loss to Houston on Friday, as the All-Star center was ejected early in the fourth quarter for a second technical. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak. Bynum has been a dominating force of late and was coming off one of his better scoring performances of the campaign when he had 36 points against the Clippers while nursing a sprained ankle.

ABOUT THE SUNS (28-27): The Suns had surged in recent weeks, winning 11 of 17 games after a slow start before a late collapse on Friday. Phoenix surrendered the game’s final nine points in a 105-99 loss to Denver. “It was a bad loss for us,” point guard Steve Nash said. “We had a bad close to the game and didn’t make plays down the stretch.” Nash had 14 points and 11 assists and is averaging 11.2 assists per game, percentage points shy of his career high.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Lakers are in search of their fourth consecutive road victory overall.

2. Michael Redd’s career resurgence is gaining steam. The Suns’ shooting guard is averaging 16.3 points his past three outings.

LAKERS Vs Trail BLAZERS 103, 96: Andrew Bynum collected 28 points and nine rebounds and Ramon Sessions stepped up in the fourth quarter as host Los Angeles kept pace in the Western Conference.

LaMarcus Aldridge recorded 29 points and nine rebounds for the Trail Blazers.

Sessions finished with 20 points and 11 assists and Kobe Bryant struggled to 18 points on 5-of-17 shooting for the Lakers, who stayed within 2 1/2 games of the San Antonio Spurs for the No. 2 spot in the West.

Los Angeles jumped out to a 30-19 lead after the first quarter but never managed to put the slumping Trail Blazers away. Portland fought back to tie it in the second and third quarters but never took the lead.

The Blazers were within a point four times in the fourth quarter, but the Lakers managed to beat them back on each occasion. Sessions scored eight points and handed out six assists in the fourth quarter and had the most important bucket when his 3-pointer extended the lead to 93-89 with 3:06 left.

Sessions, who was making his first start since joining the team at the trade deadline, would set up Matt Barnes for a layup on the next possession to make it a 95-89 gap.

Bryant sealed it from the free throw line in the final minute

GAME NOTEBOOK: Portland has dropped 10 of its last 14 games … Los Angeles dominated the glass, 53-29, led by 16 from Pau Gasol … The Lakers recorded 33 assists on 40 field goals.

The Ups and Downs of Lockout Ball

January 23rd, 2012

The long-hyped sophomore Point Guard monster for the Washington Wizards, John Wall, is finally coming into his own this season. Through the first 11 games of the season, he averaged 13 points on an atrocious 34% shooting. In the last 5 games, Wall is shooting 41% (only marginally better), but stuffing the stat sheet with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. Except for the bad shooting, those stats are among the elite of basketball. If he keeps it up, and eventually gets his shot to fall, John Wall could be looking at his ascension into the conversation for best Point Guard sooner rather than later. The effects of the lockout seem to be wearing off finally for Wall and others who have had a historically slow start to their seasons.

On January 20th, Portland Trail Blazers LaMarcus Aldridge went off for 33 points, 23 boards and 5 assists, making it a candidate for performance of the year so far. Orlando Magic Dwight Howard may have something to say about that, especially in light of recent rumors saying that Los Angeles Lakers Andrew Bynum was the best Center in today’s NBA. The same night that Aldridge went off for what may have been the best game of his career; “Superman” Dwight Howard annihilated Bynum in a showdown in L.A. Howard posted 21 points and 23 boards of his own and held the injury-prone Bynum to just 10 points and 12 boards in a victory over Bynum’s Lakers. If Howard continues to travel around the league and routinely slaying opposing Centers, Howard will not only solidify himself as the best Center without debate, but he may play himself out of being traded. Therefore, it would be a double-edged sword for Howard. On the season, he is averaging 20 points and 16 boards with 2.3 blocks. Over the past two weeks, though, he has upped those numbers to 23 point and nearly 19 boards, which is simply uncanny. The only other player who compares in the post-lockout NBA is Minnesota Timberwolves Kevin Love. On the season, Love is putting up 24 points, 14 boards, 2 threes, but all on 41% shooting, which is extremely low for a big man. Over the past two weeks, Love is shooting even worse: 36%, meaning the effects of the lockout are still lingering for Love, who was pimped by Yahoo Sports incessantly at the beginning of the season for losing weight and staying healthy during the lockout.

Other top big men with absurd shooting problems include Amar’e Stoudemire (41%), Chicago Bulls Joakim Noah (42%), Dirk Nowitzki (45%), David West (45%), DeMarcus Cousins (44%), and ex Los Angeles Clippers Chris Kaman (44%). Owners of any of these players in fantasy basketball are probably pulling their hair out right now, especially those who drafted Dallas Mavericks Dirk Nowitzki or Amar’e Stoudemire in the 1st round of their drafts. In real life, neither player has really contributed many wins for their respective teams to go along with their low shooting percentages. The New York Knicks are just 5-12, good for 10th place overall in the Eastern Conference, which is not an enviable position for a team consisting of Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. Similarly, the defending champs are also struggling. They at least have a winning record at 10-7, good for 7th place in the West. The story of the young season so far might be how under the radar the Philadelphia 76ers have flown. They are 11-5 and getting quiet contributions from their whole roster. John Wall’s Wizards team is easily the worst team in the league right now, sitting at 2-14. However, if Wall’s recent statistical uptick is any indication, the Wizards have no place to go but up.
