Golden State Warriors History
The Golden State Warriors failed to make the playoffs for another year bringing the drought to 12 consecutive years. A team, who is heavily invested in, had an up-and-down season involving injuries and inconsistent play. They ended the regular season with the same record as the previous, 34 wins and 48 losses. It may have been difficult for them since they are in a division with four other teams who made the playoffs, the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Sacramento Kings.
A team nearly $12 million over the salary cap, one would think the team makes the playoffs every year. Year after year though, the result is a disappointing season. Maybe the only player to perform well was Jason Richardson, or J-Rich, who is signed for another six years. Night after night, he filled the stands with fans waiting for one of his trademark high-flying dunks. Point guard Baron Davis suffered and battled through injuries this year and took a step back in his game. Other Golden State Warriors who did not play up to their potential is Mike Dunleavy, who has $45 million coming in the next five years, and Adonal Foyle, who has $26 million coming to him in the next three years.
The Golden State Warriors has a lot of talent but absolutely no chemistry or direction. Golden State was the worst shooting team in the league and of their top six scorers, only Jason Richardson shot higher than 43%. They did begin to play their rookies, Ike Diogu and Monta Ellis appeared mostly in the second half of the season showing signs of their talent. The Golden State Warriors do have the ninth pick overall in the draft giving them more options to improve the team.
The team will be well over the salary cap for at least three years unless they can make a trade. It will be very difficult to swap Davis or Foyle because of their contracts, and while teams would love Richardson, he is the one man the Golden State Warriors must keep. Another player that has a long, expensive contract and has interest from other teams is forward Troy Murphy. Troy has 5 years left on his deal at an average of about $10 million per year. He has averaged a double double the past two seasons, but his numbers were slightly down this year and it appears he has reached his potential. It would be nice to keep him, but if Troy can fetch some major cap relief in a big trade, it might be worth it.
Another situation the Golden State Warriors need to attend to is guard Mickael Pietrus, who was a former teammate of Phoenix’s Boris Diaw in France. Having invested close to $250 million in five core players, Jason Richardson, Troy Murphy, Derek Fisher, Adonal Foyle and Mike Dunleavy the last two summers, while also taking on Baron Davis' big contract and adding three promising prospects (Andris Biedrins, Ike Diogu and Monta Ellis), it's unlikely the Warriors will re-up with Pietrus. Then again, the price for him might have become so reasonable; they just might go ahead and do it.
Golden State may try to turn things around with a new coach next season. It may be difficult finding one able to get along with Baron Davis though.
