Seattle SuperSonics History
Certain issues come to mind when thinking about the Seattle Sonics’ and the upcoming season. They went through numerous player changes to attend to certain needs but they never appeared to be fulfilled. Ending the season 35-47, in a division with the Portland Trail Blazers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, and Denver Nuggets, the Seattle Sonics should have made the playoffs as they did so the previous season. The only team to make it to the playoffs was the Denver Nuggets who lost to the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round.
The Seattle Sonic’s season, unfortunately, began with hardships. The first was a three-game losing streak in early November in which the team lost by an average of 31 points. That was the first true sign that Bob Weiss was not able to do the job as head coach and would eventually be fired. He was on Jan. 3, with Bob Hill taking over. Things continued to go poorly, but at the trade deadline, the Sonics jettisoned Reggie Evans, Vladimir Radmanovic, Ronald Murray and Vitaly Potapenko and got back Chris Wilcox, Mike Wilks and Earl Watson, in hopes to fill some holes and make a run at the playoffs.
To end the season on a good note though, in the last game of the season, Ray Allen, having a career year, broke the NBA's single season record, held by Dennis Scott, for 3-pointers made in a season. Needing five 3-pointers in the final game to tie Scott's mark of 267, Allen had that by the end of the first quarter. He broke the record in the second period and added another for good measure, ending the season with 269 threes. The feat is even more impressive because Scott achieved the record when the 3-point line was two feet closer.
Because of their young talent at every position, the Sonics can be very flexible in the upcoming NBA Draft. They hold the 10th overall pick in the draft. Coach Bob Hill could encounter numerous situations in the draft.
Hill has said to the press, "we've got options with the pick. Do we keep the pick? Do we move the pick? Do we draft somebody that might help us in a specific need? Do we draft the best player? Do we draft somebody with big potential down the line?" Either way, let’s hope the Seattle Sonics are able to improve their young and talented team and make the playoffs.
