Phoenix Suns History
For forty years the Phoenix Suns have been a presence on the NBA scene. In their history, two players have made it to the Basketball Hall of Fame, and that was before my time. New to basketball, it was not until the last few years did I finally understand the contagion associated with it, the history that can go into a team, and how important fan dedication really is. The Phoenix Suns have quite the history of red hot players. Maybe it's the Arizona heat.
In the seventies, the Suns were great. During the 80's the Lakers dominated the NBA. The only thing noteworthy for the Suns though about the 90's was long-time Sun pledge, Charles Barkley, who was MVP and All-NBA First Team in 1993. Then in 2000 it seemed something was starting to happen for the Phoenix Suns. Even with the departure of guards Kevin Johnson that year Jason Kidd one year after that, the Suns were becoming the Phoenix rising out of the ashes.
This decade has come with their highest surge of NBA rewards. In 2000, Rodney Rogers was bestowed with the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. In 2003 Amare Stoudemire won the Suns' third Rookie of year award. Mike D' Antoni won the NBA Coach of the year award in 2005, a first for the Suns. Then, in 2005 and 2006 the Suns won their second and third NBA MVP award to date, with the honor going to Steve Nash both times. Nash also won the Best NBA Player ESPY Award in 2005. Also this decade the Suns snagged their first (and only) Most Improved Player Award when Boris Diaw won the award in 2006. Finally, Leandro Barbosa won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award in 2007. That is a lot of awards for the first decade of 2000, and only the fourth decade since the commencement of the Suns.
The Suns also had their players make the most amounts of post-season NBA teams in their teams history in the last ten years as well, with Steve Nash making the All-NBA First Team in 2005, 2006, and 2007, and Amare Stoudemire joining him for that 2007 season. Amare also made the All-NBA Second Team, first in 2005, and again this last year, with Steve Nash joining him this time, in 2008. Making the All-NBA Third team was Stephon Marbury in 2003, and Shawn Marion in 2005 and 2006.
Raja Bell became the second Sun ever to make the All-Defensive Team, in 2007. In 2008 he made the NBA All-Defensive Second Team. Other teams made were the All-Rookie Team, joined with Amare Stoudemire in 2003, and the Second Team being joined by Shawn Marion in 2000.
So why then, has the NBA Championship title been so ambiguous for them? Earlier this year during the 2007-2008 season the Suns traded Marion for Miami Heats' Shaquille O' Neale. No one can say what the loss of Marion will mean for the Suns. After all, he led his team to the playoffs in the 00-01, 02-03, 04-05, 05-06 and 06-07 seasons. The Suns are a serious NBA Championship contender this year, so one would think.
So this year the Suns step out in their best basketball shoes. It has only been four months since their Coach of the Year Mike D' Antoni took leave and was replaced by former Detroit Pistons Assistant Coach, Terry Porter. It's cool though. The Suns now have NBA Legend the Shaq, along with their steady line-up of star players including Steve Nash, Raja Bell, and Amare Stoudemire, and Boris Diaw- none of them rookies any longer. Although currently on the news wire, there are rumored talks of the Suns using Diaw, alongside Leandro Barbosa, to make strong trades for their team with.
