The Phoenix Suns had a memorable season advancing all the way to the Western Conference Finals, their first trip since 1993. The Dallas Mavericks eliminated them on their own court for a second year in a row, the first time being the San Antonio Spurs. Ironically enough, it was by Steve Nash’s former team, who just finished beating the San Antonio Spurs and also former Dallas Maverick, Michael Finley.
Finishing at the top of the Pacific Division, ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings, and finally the Golden State Warriors, the Phoenix Suns road to success was something new and refreshing to the NBA community. With the loss of Amare Stoudemire for the season because of a knee-injury, the Phoenix Suns set records with their uptempo and run-and-gun offense.
Led by reigning MVP, Steve Nash, the Phoenix Suns finished 54-28, running opponents night after night with their fast-paced offense. In a system where defense is nowhere to be found, players who usually struggled with their former teams, flourished. Players such as Raja Bell, Tim Thomas, and Leandro Barbosa thrived as they received passes from Nash and took open shot after open shot.
The Phoenix Suns showed great character throughout the season winning every elimination game in the playoffs until finally suffering defeat to the Dallas Mavericks in game six of the Western Conference Finals. Previously, they beat the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games in the first round and then beat the Los Angeles Clippers in seven games, after falling behind in both series.
As for next season, many critics are already saying the Phoenix Suns are the team to beat. With the only free agent being Tim Thomas, a strong and charismatic nucleus of players will be returning, along with superstar and big man, Amare Stoudemire. Many were sold Steve Nash was the league’s MVP for another year in a row since the Phoenix Suns continued to win games despite the loss of Stoudemire.
The Phoenix Suns will remain as one of the leagues elite teams in the 2006-07 season. With a new style of offense where usually the most important stat is shots attempted, the Phoenix Suns are definitely ready to take the NBA title. In the past, where defense and rebounding were usually cornerstones in the making of a championship team, the Phoenix Suns will definitely mix things up and make the road to the NBA finals difficult for rival teams.
