The Denver Nuggets have gone through many reincarnations over the decades. Early on in the NBA history, the Nuggets were strong and won division titles in their first two seasons in the league, and missed a third by only one game.
In 1997, Denver almost made the wrong kind of history when they nearly set the mark for fewest wins in an 82 game season. They tied the NBA's all-time worst single-season losing streak at 23 games. But after several dark years, the Nuggets were able to turn things around. In 2005, for the first time in 18 years, the Nuggets won the Northwest division title and went on to the Western Conference playoffs where they were defeated in 5 games.
The Denver Nuggets went through a major overhaul in 2006. On December 19, 2006, they traded Andre Miller and Joe Smith and two first-round draft picks of the 2007 NBA Draft to the Philadelphia 76ers for Ivan McFarlin and superstar Allen Iverson. This gave the Nuggets the top two scorers in the league. Both Iverson and McFarlin just recently played in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and took home the gold for the U.S. Despite having Iverson on the team, chemistry became on issue. They advanced to the playoffs where they first faced the San Antonio Spurs. The Nuggets were eliminated in the first round in five games for what was the fourth straight year.
The 2007-08 season saw the Nuggets finish with exactly 50 wins and they tied for the third-best all-time Nuggets record since 1976. It was the first time since the 1987-88 season that the Nuggets finished with at least 50 wins in a season and the Nuggets ended up as the 8th seed in the Western Conference of the 2008 NBA Playoffs. Denver first faced the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs where the Lakers swept the Nuggets in four games.
Even though they did advance to the playoffs last year, the Nuggets are not looking very strong coming into this season. They lost Marcus Camby, who won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award last year and was also selected to the NBA All-Defense First Team in 2007 and 2008. In addition, they also lost Eduardo Najera. Both Camby and Najera were anchors for the Nuggets defense. Forward Kenyon Martin has been injury prone lately and is not playing how he used to. As of now there is not much stability on the starting lineup so the Nuggets may have an unstable start. The Nuggets will have to fight to stay out of the bottom of their division.
In a blockbuster trade on November 4th 2008, the Nuggets sent all star guard Allen Iverson to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for PG Chauncey Billups and F Antonio McDyess.
