Even though Jazz greats Karl Malone and John Stockton are long gone, the Utah Jazz have a new look and another exciting team to watch. Leading the team now is Russian phenomenon, Andrei Kirilenko, Carlos Boozer, who came over before playing for the Cleveland Cavs, and Mehmet Okur, who previously played for the Detroit Pistons. Rookie sensation, Deron Williams, was added to the mix this past year.
Heading into the offseason, the Utah Jazz reported over $25 million in losses. It was expected though as the three core players, Kirilenko, Boozer, and Okur, were signed for over $200 million together. The Utah Jazz are looking for players to complement their stars in the upcoming free agency. Matt Harpring is also expected to re-sign with the team.
Even though they finished an even, 41-41, and only three games behind division winner, the Denver Nuggets, the Utah Jazz had a 15-win improvement from the previous year. In an average Northwest Division, the other teams being the Minnesota Timberwolves, Seattle Sonics, and Portland Trail Blazers, the Utah Jazz are expected to make a push for the playoffs. Unlike the previous year, their chances won’t be gone before the season even starts.
Nobody noticed the moment that doomed the Jazz's playoff chances for a third straight season, mostly because it happened in a small gym in Boise, one month before the NBA season even began. That's when Carlos Boozer, grabbing a rebound during the Jazz's final two-a-day workout at their Idaho training camp, felt an ache in his left thigh and pulled out of the drill. He said he was fine, not even in any pain. By the time he wore a Utah Jazz uniform again though, four months and 49 games had passed. Boozer "tweaked" the injury three times while trying to work his way back to health, depriving the Utah Jazz of their leading scorer and rebounder, and only interior scoring threat, until it was too late to climb into the postseason.
In the upcoming draft, the Utah Jazz have the fourteenth selection overall. Thus far, eight college players have visited the Utah Jazz and five of them were shooting guards. Every position is set except for the shooting guard position. Possible players to fill that need are Ronnie Brewer out Arkansas, Hassan Adams from Arizona, and J.J. Redick, of Duke University.
