Chicago Bulls History
The Chicago Bulls had another successful season making the playoffs but unfortunately, they lost to the Miami Heat in the first round. The Chicago Bulls showed strong play for a team with only a few years experience under their belt. The improved play of Kirk Hinrich and Ben Gordon helped lead the team with Andres Nocioni stepping up his game tremendously along with former Duke standout Luol Deng. Forward Tyson Chandler and guard Chris Duhon also chipped in on the run for the playoffs.
To some it may be surprising for the young Chicago Bulls to make the playoffs two years in a row since they are in one of the most competitive divisions of the Eastern Conference. In the conference are last year’s NBA champions, the Detroit Pistons, and three other teams who also made the playoffs this year, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Indiana Pacers, and Milwaukee Bucks. One of the main reasons why the Chicago Bulls have seen success is the play and leadership of captain Kirk Hinrich. Hinrich has played so well critics have explained he has gone from being an “All-Star” in the league to one of its “MVPs.”
Hinrich’s play wasn’t enough for the Chicago Bulls as they fell to the Miami Heat in the first round. The playoff series against Miami exposed some gaping holes in the Bulls' lineup though. Therefore, while the Miami Heat moved on to face the New Jersey Nets and eventually won the championship, the Chicago Bulls made several moves and freed up some room to sign high-profile free agents.
The Bulls were very busy on draft day. They got a freebie from the Blazers, which turned out to be Viktor Khryapa because they agreed to take LaMarcus Aldridge at No. 2 for Portland. In return, the Bulls got Khryapa and Tyrus Thomas, who the Blazers took at No. 4. The Bulls then had the Sixers lock in Thabo Sefolosha for them with the 13th pick, while the Bulls drafted Rodney Carney for the Sixers (and threw in some cash) in return. The rumors are still flying about the Bulls acquiring Kevin Garnett, and it would likely take Thomas, Sefolosha, Ben Gordon (or Luol Deng or Tyson Chandler) to make it happen. We'll see. Even if the Garnett trade rumors have no substance, coming away with Khryapa, Thomas and Sefolosha looks like a good night to anyone.
Through numerous trades and movement, and a lot of help from the New York Knicks, the Chicago Bulls were able to set themselves up in a highly beneficial position. Because of the many transactions they made, the Bulls were able to sign Center Ben Wallace from the Detroit Pistons. Wallace brings his stellar defensive game which helped the Detroit Pistons to four straight Eastern Conference appearance and his veteran leadership and prescence.
The Chicago Bulls have arguably one of the most complete starting lineups in the NBA. The transaction for Wallace will help them greatly as they also traded Tyson Chandler to the New Orleans Hornets for another Power Forward in P.J. Brown and swingman J.R. Smith. Chicago also has the option to swap first-round picks with the New York Knicks. The Baby Bulls don't seem so "Baby" anymore.
