The Rockies is a baseball franchise that is based in Denver, Colorado, that plays in the Major League. The Rockies participates in the Western Division of the National League. The Colorado Rockies derive their team’s name from the Rocky Mountains which passes through Colorado. The Rockies wears the colors black, purple, silver, and white.

The Rockies joined the National League in 1993 together with another franchise, the Florida Marlins. Denver was able to get a Major League baseball franchise through the efforts of Larry Varnell and Roy Romer. The expansion team’s owners were led by Ohio beverage distributor, John Antonucci, and Michael I. Monus. Denver’s bid for a Major League franchise was approved on the 5th of July, 1991, together with the Florida Marlins. They chose David Nied as their first pick in the 2002 expansion draft. David Nied played a season for the Atlanta Braves before getting drafted by the Rockies.

The Rockies played their very first game on the 5th of April, 1993. The Rockies faced the New York Mets at Shea Stadium, but were dealt with a 3-0 defeat. Fans with Rockies tickets watched their first home game on the 9th of April, 1993, with the team playing against the Montreal Expos (now known as the Washington Nationals). More than 80,000 baseball fans with Rockies tickets attended the team’s first home game. The Colorado Rockies dispatched the Montreal Expos in an 11-4 contest.

Expansion teams usually struggle in their first season, and the Colorado Rockies is not an exception. Despite the franchises’ difficulties, they managed to post a win-loss season record of 67-95, a record for National League expansion franchises. The Colorado Rockies was also able to draw a season attendance of 4,483,350 fans with Rockies tickets, a Major League attendance record that still stands today. Rockies first baseman Andres Galarraga took home the batting title after hitting .370 for the season.

The next season, The Rockies did not fare better than the last season. Although the baseball club struggled in the field, some of the team’s sluggers were gaining a reputation for their homers. Galarraga continued to perform well on the plate, and so did Rockies slugger Dante Bichette.  The player strike of 1994 shortened that season, and the Rockies posted a win-loss record of 53-64, and enjoyed a season attendance of 3,281,511 fans with Rockies tickets.

In 1995, the Colorado Rockies signed outfielder Larry Walker, who used to play for the Montreal Expos. Walker would be part of the “Blake Street Bombers” together with Andres Galarraga, Dante Bichette, and Vinny Castilla. These four players would help the Colorado Rockies to their first winning season. The Colorado Rockies moved to their current home at Coors Field, on the 26th of April, 2005, playing against the New York Mets, whom they defeated in an 11-9 contest. The Colorado Rockies faced the Atlanta Braves for the Division title, but lost after a 3-1 series. The 1995 season is also the Rockies’ first play-offs appearance as the Wild Card winner. The Rockies lead the Major League season attendance for the 3rd consecutive year, with a season attendance of 3,390,037 baseball fans with Rockies tickets.

The 1996 season filled Rockies fans with hope with the return of the Blake Street Bombers. However, Larry Walker suffered an injury which limited his playing time. Walker was only able to play in 83 games that season. Rockies outfielder Ellis Burks stood-up in place of Walker, who posted a season batting average of .344 while posting 40 home-runs. The Rockies set a season win-loss record of 83-79. The Colorado Rockies finished in third place of the National League West Division.

One of the highlights for the Colorado Rockies in the 1997 season was the stellar performance of Larry Walker. Walker had a batting average of .366 and posted 49 home runs for the season. Walker’s outstanding performance was recognized after he was awarded as the National League MVP as well as the Rawlings Gold Glove Award.  The Rockies ended the season with a win-loss record if 83-79, again finishing in third place in the National League West Division.

In the next two seasons, the Colorado Rockies was not able to post winning records.  The 1998 season saw the dissolution of the Blake Street Bombers, after Galarraga signed with the Atlanta Braves. The Rockies posted a season win-loss record of 77-85 in 1998, and 72-90 in 1999.

The 2000 season saw major changes for the Colorado Rockies, with the retirement of general manager Bob Gebhard. He was replaced by Dan O’Dowd. O’Dowd traded away Dante Bichette and Vinny Castilla. The only remnant of the Blake Street Bombers was Larry Walker, whose injury in that season limited him to playing in just 87 games. The 2000 season saw the first time that the Rockies failed to lead the league in season attendance, with a season attendance of 3,481,065 baseball fans with Rockies tickets.

"But we dug ourself a hole; now we're going to have to get back out of it like we've been doing it all...
