Dodgers Defeat Cubs, Move onto NLCS:

For twenty years the Dodgers have tried to win a playoff series game, until Saturday night. It was a deciding night for the Dodgers: win and the Dodgers move on to the League Championship. Lose and those who reserved season tickets would put their money to use for at least one more Dodgers Division series. This year has been full of highs and lows for the Dodgers. Half way through their season, the Dodgers somehow finagled a three-way trade for Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox, who are still scratching their helmets trying to understand how they made the worst decision in baseball history. With the addition of new Coach Joe Torre came a new surge of confidence the Dodgers have not felt in, oh say twenty years? So it was no wonder then, with two sweeping victories over the Chicago Cubs of 7-2 and 10-2 that a betting man like me would throw down some dollars that the Dodgers would score at least 7 in their inevitable win against the Cubs, right? Or, to somehow lower the risk factor, how about just seven runs all together?

In a nail-biting saga, the Dodgers made for a promising game out of the gates. Of course the Dodgers would score at least 7. The Dodgers brought in 2 runs in their first inning alone. And then the Dodgers stalled. The Cubs made the brilliant decision to walk Manny, not once did the Dodgers watch their star hitter get walked, but twice! Unbelievable. Bat after bat the pitcher threw the ball high or wide as Manny looked on. He was my highest hope to winning a large betting pool tonight. In the third inning he hit a single. Hope surged as I watched him dance inch towards second base, teasing the Cubs pitcher, who couldn't decide to strike a Dodger out, or get a Dodger out for stealing.

Batting after Manny was Andre Ethier, a twenty-six year old Dodgers staple known for left-handed skills. It was not until the 5 th inning that the Dodgers made their third run. This was bad news. How did the Dodgers go two games previously crushing the Cubs and now it seemed as if the game was stuck in a vortex of plasma? How is it that tonight the Dodgers seem to be hesitating, taking their time to bring the runs in? Out in the field, Dodgers Hiroki Kuroda pitched a perfect game for 6 1/3 innings. The Cubs couldn't get by him. The Dodgers wouldn't give them a single run. Until Dodgers relief pitchers Corey Wade and Jonathan Broxton took over. In the eighth inning, the Dodgers let one get by them. Sweaty palms, I gave in. I started cheering on both teams when they made contact with the bat, booing both teams for stopping the other from bringing runs in. I needed seven runs any which way you cut it. At one point Manny stole a base, causing Cubs right fielder to get hurt for a minute or two. I encouraged him to get up. The avid Dodgers lady sitting behind me glared, huffed, snorted. I didn't care. Who had the wallet for it?

As the innings dragged on, and yes, once it was 3 to 1 with the Dodgers lead, I thought I was having a heart attack. And the lady behind me didn't help matters out. I watched as they Dodgers held fast. Why couldn't they just go easy on the Cubs for once? God knows they could use the break from their 100 year losing streak. I watched the ninth inning begin. Would it happen? Would either team bring some runs in? I needed three more all together. It didn't matter who or how those runs had to be brought in.

Finally the Dodgers got their last Cub out with the scoreboard holding fast at 3-1. My heart kind of stopped, and the panic sweats began to drip as I realized how much I had just lost. Then I glanced at the field, at the Dodgers dancing and whooping down on the diamond. And I had to smile. My team had won after all. No money can beat that.

Los Angeles Dodgers : A year in review and outlook into the next

With the final game of the Major League Baseball season commencing September 28, fall is always the most thrilling time of the year if you are a dedicated baseball fanatic. Each year things on the field (and off!) can get hairy as enthusiastic fans hash it out over which team will win. For the Los Angeles Dodgers, they are riding the delicious crest of the wave of what has so far been a spectacular season.

It has been twenty years since the Dodger's last took home a winning title, and they have never been more ready. Or perhaps more not ready. For newcomer Joe Torre, he stepped onto the Dodger's as team manager earlier this year and embraced a fresh set of players entirely. Bogged down this year with an uncannily high number of injuries amongst his Dodger vets, he has had to pump up the rookies and the not so experienced. This involved some substantial trades that certainly changed the course of the 2008 Dodger's season earlier this year. With the inability to perform of Dodger's hitting coach Don Mattingly, Torre also had to pick up the extra slack in that department as well. Yes, Torre certainly took a larger-than expected bite when accepting the offer to manage the Los Angeles Dodger's.

However, you will be pressed to find a single Dodger's person with the gall to question the actions of Joe Torre. Since the addition of MLB superstar Manny Ramirez on July 31st earlier this year, the Dodger's have had a record-breaking turnout of 115,300. In a three-way pact for what may have been the worst decision the Boston Red Sox ever made when they let go of Manny, the Dodger's traded in outfielder Jason Bay and infielder Josh Wilson to the Red Sox, as well as infielder Andy LaRoche to the Pittsburgh Pirates. But Dodger's manager Joe Torre has no regrets. Named the National League Player of the Month in August, Dodger's hopefuls eagerly anticipate the possibility of Manny's inauguration as the MVP of the 2008 MLB season.

As Dodger's fans and baseball fans alike flock to the Dodger's stadium to catch a glimpse of Manny's notorious dreadlocks and playful antics on the field, the Dodger's are bracing for a highly heated post-season and a chance at the World Series title. With the post-season Division Series beginning today officially, the Dodger's must win three out of five games to move on. Then phase two of the post-season madness kicks off October 10 th where the Dodger's must win four out of seven games in the League for that golden shot at the coveted World Series, which begins October 22 nd and the Dodger's must also win four out of seven games to call the title their own.

Manny is not the only Dodger's player worth talking about this year. The Dodger's Korean pitcher, Chan Ho Park, returned to the Dodger's November of last year. This year, on June 21 st , Park became only the fourth player in MLB history to start a game against each and every one of the 30 teams that make up the MLB teams. Another historic moment in MLB and Dodger's history: all three Dodger's pitchers, on May 17 th , who pitched against the Angels, were of Asian descent. This year the Dodger's have more Asian players than any other team with four Asian pitchers and an Asian infielder.

Yes indeed, this year's World Series will be almost cinematic. Between the Angels and the Cubs, the Dodger's have their work cut out for them. The Dodger's must not only play ball the hardest they can, but they must trump the emotions involved with the Chicago Cubs. For the Cubs, they want more than anything to quench the notorious 100-year dearth since last winning the World Series that hangs over their teams' reputation like a black fog that just won't lift. The Dodger's must find a way to be hungrier for the title than even that.

    Dodgers Background Information

The Dodgers is one of the Major Leagues’ premier teams. The Dodgers used to be based in Brooklyn, and played its first game in the National League on the 19th of April, 1890. Back then, The Dodgerswas affectionately known as the “Bridegrooms.” The name “Trolley Dodgers” got coined for the club because of the intricate network of trolley cars in the Brooklyn boroughs, and the name was eventually shortened to “Dodgers .” The baseball club’s National League debut proved to be a success, as the Brooklyn Bridegrooms won the championships with a record of 86-43.

The Dodgers failed to secure the national pennant in 1962, when the San Francisco Giants managed to thwart them after tying in the National Finals, then beating the Dodgers in the tie-breaking play-offs. The Los Angeles baseball team made it up for its fans by winning the national pennant from 1963-65, and even winning the World Series in 1965 with a record of 97-65 against the Minnesota Twins .

The 70’s was also a great decade for the Los Angeles baseball team. If you had Los Angeles Tickets for a Dodgers baseball game during those times, you were sure to have spent your money wisely. During the 70’s, the Dodgers was able to secure three National League Pennants, three World Series appearances, and 910 victories in that decade. It was also in this time that the management of the team was passed from Hall of Famer Walter Aston to Tommy Lasorda. Tommy Lasorda’s managing career started with the Dodgers on the 29th of September, 1976, after Aston decided to retire after 23 years of being the Dodgers’ manager. Tommy Lasorda is known not only because he helped lead the team to winning the National League pennant back to back in 1977 and 1978, but also because of his distinctive personality. Tommy Lasorda is the complete opposite of the reserved Walter Aston. Lasorda was highly opinionated and is the team’s number one cheerleader. Tommy Lasorda made such an impression that it was hard to think of The Los Angels Dodgers without associating it to Tommy Lasorda from the late 70’s to the early 90’s. The 70’s was also the decade when the Dodgers achieved an outstanding achievement. In 1977, four members of the Dodgers team hit 30 or more home runs namely: Steve Garvey, who had 33 homeruns; Reggie Smith, who had 32; while Ron Cey and Dusty Baker both had 30 home runs.

In 2000, the Dodgers set themselves to bring back the old glory the Dodgers used to enjoy. Jim Tracy, the former bench coach of the Dodgers , became the team’s manager in 2001. Under Tracy’s guidance, the Dodgers had a successful 2001 season, winning 86 games. In 2002, The Dodgers won 92 games. The 2003 season was another successful run as the Los Angeles Tickets for a Dodgers game proved worth your money. The Dodgers won 85 games. It was also in 2003 when Eric Gagne won the National League Cy Young award. No Dodger won that honor since 1988. In 2004, ownership of the Dodgers was transferred to Boston real estate developer, Frank McCourt. It was also in 2004 when the Dodgers was victorious for 93 games and won the National League West Division title. The Dodgers hadn’t won the Division title since 1995.

Now, The Dodgers are off yet again that the fans’ trust and support is well placed. The Dodgers underwent a major overhaul from the roster to the manager. The current roster is filled with talented athletes, 20 of which are participating in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

The Dodgers had a fruitful season. The success of the team was proven by the abundant sale of the Dodgers tickets . In fact, the following are the statistical leaders of the previous season:

The next season of the Dodgers will surely be an exciting one. The fans will be excited once again and the Dodgers tickets will sell out. Jeff Kent was given an extension through 2007. If free agent Greg Maddux returns with Derek Lowe and Brad Penny, the Dodgers start out with a pretty solid top three, even if none is a true ace. The Dodgers might need an outstanding home run hitter for the next season, because the team spent most of the year last in the league in home runs. The supporters of the league and the Dodgers fans will be waiting for the performances of James Loney as well as Andy LaRoche. Both players showed remarkable skills. James Loney impressed the audience and co-players with the way he played in the month of September and October. On the other hand, Andy LaRoche will have to show that his shoulder is sound and that his overall approach has matured from the last Spring Training.

Dodgers has much to offer for the success of the next season. The Dodgers team will continue to be a strong and flexible team. The fans, who eagerly wait, are expecting for a great sports viewing experience while the team is training for a well-improved skills.
