Torre for the Dodgers

As a manager of the LA Dodgers, Joe Torre had to address issues involving his players. And of primary interest was Joe Torre’s take on Roger Clemens’ testimony on Wednesday before a House of Representatives panel on steroids. Torre repeated views expressed last month at a Dodger Stadium mini-camp, without offering an opinion on whether he thought Clemens used performance-enhancing drugs while pitching for him or whether Clemens lied about it, as has been charged.

“It's just sad, what can I say?” Torre said. A new chapter in Torre’s career opens this week, as Dodgers pitchers and catchers report Thursday for the first time with him as manager. Torre briefly repeated the bizarre off-season, from his controversial separation from the Yankees in a meeting with George Steinbrenner and his sons, to the unexpected opportunity to replace Grady Little as Dodgers manager when Torre was considering broadcasting offers. There’s a great deal of pressure.

According to Joe Torre, Don Mattingly will be in camp next week. Mattingly originally was named as Torre's hitting coach, but he stepped aside to a role of special assignment coach while dealing with a divorce.

In addition to this, Triple-A hitting coach Mike Easler was named to replace Mattingly as Major League hitting coach. Joe Torre’s staff includes returning pitching coach Rick Honeycutt and first-base coach Mariano Duncan; third-base coach Larry Bowa, who came with Torre from the Yankees; new bench coach Bob Schaefer; bullpen coach Kenny Howell, promoted from Triple-A pitching coach; longtime coach Manny Mota and bullpen catcher Rob Flippo.

  Dodgers For 6 1/2 innings, Chan Ho Park and Barry Zito pitched like it was 2001, back when both of these long-struggling starters were among baseball's best. Zito, the Giants' woebegone $126 million left-hander, still seemed headed for another defeat until his San Francisco teammates took charge against a Los Angeles bullpen that's also seen better days.

  LA Dodgers Rick Ankiel slapped a two-run, two-out single to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap a three-run rally and lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. The win brought the Cardinals (50-39) to within 2 1/2 games of the first-place Cubs (52-36) in the National League Central.

  Los Angeles Dodgers Dodgers right-hander Brad Penny is expected to be out through the All-Star break after shutting down a simulated game Saturday with more pain in his shoulder.
