Risk on Free-agent Market

During off-season of MLB, the acquisition of new players is one of the tasks of clubs that needs a lot of analysis and evaluation. General Manager Ned Colletti is the man who makes the decision for the acquisition of players.

Moreover, Dayton Moore of the Royals, Jon Daniels of the Rangers, Kevin Towers of the Padres, and Doug Melvin of the Brewers, are the ones responsible for the said task for their teams. Ned colletti, as he lured free-agent center fielder, Andruw Jones, with a $36.2 million two-year contract, put an explanation point on the end of the Winter Meetings. Andrew Jones is the fifth-highest-paid active player behind Alex Rodriguez, who's paid with $27.5 million, Manny Ramirez with $20 million, Derek Jeter with $18.9 million, and Carlos Zambrano with $18.3 million. Ned Colletti focused on the 26 home runs and 94 RBIs of Andruw Jones last season, and Colletti felt that the LA Dodgers needed a Gold Glove center fielder.

However, Ned Colletti knew he was overpaying, but the 2-year term was short and the Dodgers general manager was able to retain his young outfielders while adding a player who can make contributions. A flurry of activity followed as the Winter Meetings ended, with the team of Padres signing pitcher Randy Wolf, the Rangers adding outfielder Milton Bradley and the Brewers bringing Eric Gagne as their closer. However, signing of all these players carried risk-reward relationships. The 2007 season was finished by Randy Wolf on the disabled list of the Dodgers and Bradley ended up on the disabled list of the Padres, in addition, both players needed surgery. Gagne struggled badly during his late-season stay with the World Series champion Red Sox. After he had arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder, Wolf missed the final two months of the season. Despite everything, he signed a contract with the Padres that guarantees him $4.75 million in base pay and could earn him $9 million.

Dayton Moore made outfielder Jose Guillen the highest paid player in the history of the Royals, in the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tennessee, with a 3-year contract that averages $12 million per season. The signing was made despite the fact that Guillen was accused in media reports of receiving human growth hormone after January 2005, when it was banned by baseball. Guillen was suspended for 15 days by Commissioner Bud Selig, and the ink on the contract was hardly dry. “We signed Jose knowing [a suspension] was a possibility,” Dayton Moore said. The Players Association has filed a grievance to overturn the suspension, but the Kansas City Royals are fully aware that they may be without the services of their highest-paid player for the first two weeks of the season. The question would be; why would the Royals sign Guillen when they knew his name was linked to human growth hormone? The team needed a power bat in the middle of its lineup, that’s why they had to overpay and had to take a risk. Guillen batted .290 with 23 home runs, 99 RBIs and 28 doubles for Seattle last season.

Milton Bradley seems to be a classic risk-reward player, and the team of Rangers is in need of a center fielder. When Texas manager Ron Washington said he would be very comfortable with Bradley as a member of the team, it invested $5 million to complete the deal. Furthermore, there is the closer and that would be Eric Gagne. The big right-hander once carried the tag “Game Over” on his Dodger days, but he had a terrible finish to his season with Boston, as he posted a 2-2 record and 6.75 ERA in 20 games after being acquired in a trade with Texas. Gagne signed a contract worth $10 million and the chance to earn an additional million in performance bonuses, even with his late-season struggles.

On the other hand, when it comes to acquiring pitchers for the Padres, Kevin Towers has a history of making good decisions. The question would be; what did he see in a left-hander who missed the final two months? “We would have had more concern if the injury were to the elbow area, since Randy was coming off Tommy John surgery and if he would have shown signs last year of lack of velocity and command problems,” by Towers in an e-mail. “By our reports, Randy performed outstanding the first three months of the season before his shoulder flared up, and [Wolf's] surgical procedure was just a cleanup of the labrum, which was of the non-aggressive type, and he has responded real well the last month with his throwing program. We felt the risk was very minimal, and the upside reward was far greater.” – Another risk-reward relationship when nearly every general manager is searching for more pitching.

On the other hand, Doug Melvin is one of the most experienced general managers in the game, but he is aware that he needed to fill the closer role. Melvin worked hard on trades at the Winter Meetings but came to the conclusion, “We weren't going to give up our young players that are the core of the team.”

And therefore, the Brewers took a risk and paid Eric Gagne as if he were one of the elite closers in the game, even though his performance of recent seasons hasn't reflected this due to injuries.

The strategies depend on the general managers. Of course, the club doesn’t sign a player whose name has been associated with performance-enhancing drugs and players coming off of seasons or injuries; or even those who has problems with their temper. All of this is even more factual when they are signing players to significant financial contracts.

Ned Colletti aims his team to win, that’s why he’s willing to take risks. As we all know, the LA Dodgers has proven that they have the outstanding players and they can win their fantastic games.
