Los Angeles Dodgers Information

Dodgers Player Profile: Hiroki Kuroda

Hiroki Kuroda is a starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers and was born and lived in Osaka . Baseball must run in the family as his father, Kazuhiro Kuroda, was also a professional baseball player who played for the Nankai Hawks.

Kuroda began his Nippon Professional baseball career when he joined the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in 1996 as a second-round draft pick. In the beginning of his career Kuroda was often overshadowed by the 1996 first-round draft pick, Toshikazu Sawazaki, who was the same age as Kuroda but won the Japanese Rookie of the Year award in 1997. Kuroda slowly built up his status to become a consistent part of the starting rotation while Sawazaki's star slowly began to fade away. In 1999 he pitched in the International Cup held in Sydney , and marked a win against Korea and a complete-game shutout against Taiwan . Kuroda was a reliever in the 2004 Summer Olympics and contributed to the Japanese team's bronze medal win. In 2005 he led the Central League with 15 wins, and won the Best Nine Award and the Japanese Golden Glove award. Kuroda continued his success throughout 2006, ending the season with a league-leading 1.85 ERA which solidified his reputation as one of the best pitchers in Japan .

He became a free agent in May 2006, but announced that he would stay with the Carp for the 2007 season but also said that he was willing to hear offers from other teams. Many teams showed interest in Kuroda, including the Seibu Lions and Hanshin Tigers.

It wasn't until October 2007 that Kuroda declared his intention to play in the major leagues. The Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Los Angeles Dodgers showed varying degrees of interest in signing Kuroda, and he ended up signing a three-year, 35.3 million dollar contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on December 12, 2007.

Kuroda had a great start to his Dodgers career. In his first start he pitched seven innings against the San Diego Padres, holding them to 1 run which got him his first win of his American baseball career. He continued to go 3-6 with an ERA of 4.04 before going on the DL with mild tendonitis.

When he returned, he pitched seven shutout innings against the Houston Astros but his next start was even more impressive. On July 7, 2008, Kuroda pitched seven perfect innings in a game against the Atlanta Braves and he shutout the Braves on one hit with no walks over nine innings. Kuroda would allow only one base runner in a 91-pitch complete game one-hit shutout. Kuroda became the first rookie pitcher since Orel Hershiser in 1984 to take a perfect game into the eighth inning.

Kuroda made his first postseason appearance in the major leagues on October 4, 2008, as the starting pitcher for Game 3 of the Dodgers' first playoff series against the Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers were leading the series two games to zero. He gave an amazing 6 1/3 shutout inning performance which won the game and helped the Dodgers complete the sweep of the Cubs to advance to the next round in the National League Championship Series.

No Words from Hiroki Kuroda

It was reported on Wednesday that General Manager Ned Colletti still had not received a word whether Japanese free-agent pitcher Hiroki Kuroda would come to the United States next week to visit Los Angeles. Hiroki Kuroda, a starting pitcher of Hiroshima Toyo Carp., led the league with a 1.85 ERA by 2006, solidifying his reputation as one of the best pitchers in his country. And in a six year period, from 1999-2005, Kuroda lead the Central League in complete games.

However, the LA Dodgers, who late Wednesday night agreed to terms with outfielder Andruw Jones on a two-year deal, are competing with Seattle, Arizona and Kansas City, among others, for the services of the Hiroki Kuroda. It is believed that the right-hander have received a four-year offer from the team of Mariners.

According to Ned Colletti, Hiroki Kuroda “is just starting to be in the negotiating stage. I believe it's been a very methodical process to date. I assume many teams are involved.”

Los Angeles, like many teams, needs to acquire substantial free-agent players such as Andruw Jones and Hiroki Kuroda before making a trade, providing the depth from which to deal. From a timing standpoint, the Dodgers are likely to wait on a Kuroda decision before pulling the trigger on a deal for a pitcher such as Erik Bedard of Baltimore or Dan Haren of Oakland, which would cost multiple young players. Ned Colletti pointed out that no third-base acquisition appeared imminent, even with the apparent availability of Brandon Inge of Detroit after the Miguel Cabrera trade. In addition, free agent Tadahito Iguchi is willing to move from second base to third if the LA Dodgers want him. Ned Colletti also said that he will not spend significant salary on veteran relievers, because the Dodgers have as many as a half-dozen young pitchers who could pitch in the Major Leagues next year; Clayton Kershaw, Greg Miller, James McDonald, John Meloan, Ramon Troncoso and Scott Elbert.

According to Ned Colletti, the club would exercise some caution with Clayton Kershaw, who is only twenty and who is considered the top pitching prospect in the organization. But he was not worried about rushing him. “Because of his blend of ability and makeup, his birthdate is not as much of a concern,” Colletti said.

Clayton Kershaw established himself as an elite high-school prospect in 2006 when he posted a 13-0 record with an ERA of 0.77, and recorded 139 strikeouts in 64 innings. He was selected by USA Today as High School Baseball Player of the Year and was also the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year, as well.

However, John Meloan, who is the only one who has pitched even briefly in the Majors, will be glad to hear that Ned Colletti is considering changing the right-hander back into a starting pitcher. He was drafted in 2005 as a starter and has expressed a desire to return to that role. Meloan is from the University of Arizona, where he was a perfect 10-0 in 11 starts in year 2004, in leading the Wildcats to the College World Series. In addition to this, in three seasons with Arizona, he compiled a record of 24-4 in 30 starts.

The Los Angeles Dodgers is indeed a team that is composed of great players and outstanding new ones to prove that they will be one of the best teams in MLB.
