The history of Chicago Cubs started during the peak of success of the team Cincinnati Red Stockings in the year 1869. During that time the Cincinnati Red Stockings was the most successful team in professional baseball. They entered the National Association of Professional Baseball Players in the year 1870. Other baseball teams, including the Chicago Cubs which is known during that time as the Chicago White Stockings, have the singular purpose of defeating the team of Cincinnati Red Stockings. Along with this, many of the teams took some of their name and color to be affixed to their teams. This is the reason why the Chicago White Stockings got their name. In the following years, the Chicago White Stockings and Cincinnati Red Stockings became rivals. However, because of the incident that destroyed the club's ballpark, uniforms, and other possessions of Chicago White Stockings, the team finished the season poorly having borrowed uniforms while playing the last games remaining prior to the incident. In the following year, the team acquired many key players that could help them become successful. The club president of the National Association of Professional Baseball Players was planning to build a new league that could replace the existing league. This was when the National League was born. Soon after, in the year 1890, the team became known as the Chicago Colts. As the Chicago Colts, the team was known to be competitive. In the year 1898, they again changed their name to Chicago Orphans. Finally, in the year 1902, the team became known as the Chicago Cubs. The team of Chicago Cubs today is known as one of the dominant teams in Major League Baseball.
The team of Chicago Cubs today is playing in the National League of Central Division in Major League Baseball, along with many great teams such as the St. Louis Cardinals of St. Louis, Missouri; Pittsburgh Pirates of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Milwaukee Brewers of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Houston Astros of Houston, Texas; and Cincinnati Reds of Cincinnati, Ohio. They are currently homed in Wrigley Field, which is also known as The Friendly Confines, Cubs Park.
