Los Angeles Angels : A look back and a look forward

In 1960 an arranged meeting was held during winter in St. Louis. This meeting was formed by the American League owners; it is an assembly that focuses on placing a team based in the Los Angeles. It all began in 1961 as they all agreed and proclaimed that they plan to place a team in Los Angeles as franchise. However, Gene Autry a former singing cowboy who became famous in radio, television and the also the owner of the Golden West Broadcasting, attended the meeting in 1960, wishing that he can win for the broadcasting rights for the new team to be placed in Los Angeles. There were two different bids in acquiring the franchise that failed before Gene Autry signed and agreed in purchasing the franchise; he also paid Walter O'Malley, the owner of Dodgers, with $300,000 for the naming of the team Angels.

The new team owned by Gene Autry was named the Los Angeles Angels that was based in Anaheim California. The Los Angles Angels is one of the Major League Baseball team and played their first game on April 11, 1961. The team played their first game at Wrigley Field, which has a crowd capacity of 20,457 and is located within the bounds of Los Angeles, where they beat the Baltimore with a score of 7-2 and a winning percentage of .435; it is also the best winning percentage to be recorded for the first time by a first-year team. In 1962 to 1965 the Anaheim Angels team, or Los Angeles Angels team during that time, played their home games at the Dodger Stadium with a crowd capacity of 56,000.

In order to mould a unique identity, the Los Angeles Angels changed their name into California Angels, before moving to Anaheim in 1965. The first time that the Los Angeles Angels entered the Major League playoffs was in 1979. The team won the American League Western Division that was led by Don Baylor; he was also the MVP for that season. Other veteran players such as Rod Carew and Bobby Grich contributed to the team’s success. The California Angels or Anaheim Angels lost for four games against the Orioles in the American League Championship Series.

Gene Autry sold his interest for the Anaheim Angels or California Angels in 1996, he later died in the year 1998. The California Angels was owned by the Walt Disney Company on April 3, 1996. In 1997 they changed the California Angels to Anaheim Angels for the 1997 season. The Anaheim Stadium was being developed and a lot of renovations were being made. They widened the hallway for the fans and the bullpens are built with terrace; the comfort rooms, shops, and offices are being replaced with some unique features added. They named the new Anaheim Angels Stadium to Edison International Field of Anaheim. The Anaheim Angels team uniform also changed and the team’s logo was redesigned by the Walt Disney Company.

The Anaheim Angels beat the Giants with 4-1 and took their first ever World Championship award. The Anaheim Angels jersey, Anaheim Angels hats and other notable items were being sold in the market. They changed the Anaheim Angels logo with Anaheim Angels on top. The Anaheim Angels became famous and their team colors red, white and navy blue became popular with the Anaheim Angels team logo which is a big letter “A” that is mostly red in color with a halo on top of it, becoming well known in the city of Anaheim.

In 2003, the Anaheim Angels try so hard to retain their championship as they struggle hard for this season. Some of their key players were injured and make made this season a hard one for the Anaheim Angels. By this same year the Walt Disney Company sold them to a Mexican American billionaire Arte Moreno. The 2006 season gave the team of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim a winning record of 89-73. During that season, the Angels tickets were sold to exciting fans. Though the Los Angeles Angels’ previous record is considered a success, it is not enough for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim who aims to reach the World Series. The team was not really satisfied with some of their performances during the 2006 season. Just like their game within the month of May that made the team fall 11 games under the .500 mark. Though, the team of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim had an inconsistent offense and a fall on defense from first in 2005 and last in 2006, the team was never hopeful for the next season.

In addition to this, as injuries to star players Bartolo Colon and Darin Erstad, were considered as tough problems for the team; the season saw the coming out of future star players like Jered Weaver and Howie Kendrick. The team of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim also signed Gary Matthews Jr. in November to take over in center field but devoted most of their time updating the bullpen. Though the 2006 season was considered as an unsatisfactory for the team, the Angels were challenged to strive more and improve their skills and game play. As a lot of fans buy Angels tickets, the Angels will be inspired enough.

The next season of the Los Angeles Angels is expected to offer more of its performances after the supporters speculated the team to compete for the division title in the previous season. The 2007 season of the Angels is also expected to have a good rotation. The top player will be middling start John Lackey, who has never quite lived up to the promise he showed during the 2002 World Series run. Ervin Santana will show some of the initial potentials he had during his rookie year and will hope to have a better year. With 11-2 2.56ERA in 19 starts of Jered Weaver’s promising rookie year, it is expected that his next season will keep his great start or even will give him more improved skills. Moreover, it is also expected that the fans and supporters will grab Angels tickets.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will have a chance for a successful 2007 season, especially if the team will also focus in adding another big bat to the lineup. Arte Moreno, as the owner of the team, promised that the club would make major changes and improvements in the offseason. He has also tabled deals for well-known veterans because of his reticence to lose his young talents. The team of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will surely face a more challenging season as the team prepares itself for a great battle. As the Angels tickets will continue to sell out.
