Los Angeles Angels Information
A Time for the Children
The Angels of Anaheim is not just a team that aims to win for itself. It’s a team that also participates on community activities or those that would benefit people in need. Admired across Major League Baseball for the depth of talent in their organization, the Angels put it to good use off the field as well as in manager Mike Scioscia's versatile and exciting lineup.
On the way to claiming their third American League West title in four seasons, the Angels also distinguished themselves with their community involvement, first and foremost taking an active interest in the welfare of young people. “From youth baseball clinics to player appearances at schools and hospitals, the Angels organization remains committed to enriching a Southern California community that has supported the team throughout its 47-year history,” said Angels’ community relations manager Matt Bennett.
Moreover, the team averaged 41,551 fans for their 81 home dates, reaching 3,365,632 in total attendance in 2007. It marked their fifth consecutive season of drawing at least three million fans. “We've been very blessed with wonderful support from our fans throughout the years,” said Matt Bennett. “And we will continue to strive to be a leader in the local community to help those who are less fortunate. It is our goal to maximize our resources to the betterment of the local community.”
The organization established the Angels Baseball Foundation by 2004, to serve as a fund-raising arm of the club and help contribute financial support to many worthy local charities. And in its third season, the Foundation has granted a total of more than $1 million to charities with an emphasis on youth causes. Recent grant recipients have included such groups as the Boys & Girls Clubs Orange County Alliance, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Orange County, West Anaheim and North Anaheim Little Leagues, the YMCA of Anaheim, Children's Bureau of Orange County, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Orange County, and Project Access, to name a few. Moreover, the Angels Baseball Foundation also continued its long-standing relationship with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Orange County with the 29th Annual 65 Roses Golf Classic.
The event, held 4th to 5th of November and co-hosted by Mike Scioscia and former Angels great Don Baylor, helped raise more than $250,000 in the fight against cystic fibrosis. The Angels Baseball Foundation Alumni Golf Classic also had a successful year in 2007. Its annual tournament in August, with more than 25 alumni participating, raised more than $150,000 to fund the foundation's charitable efforts. Some of those efforts included reaching out to area schools through the launching of the Angels Baseball Foundation's Adopt-A-School program.
The Adopt-A-School program reached out to five local elementary schools, in its opening season: Theodore Roosevelt Elementary and Paul Revere Elementary in Anaheim, Eisenhower Elementary in Garden Grove, Olive Elementary in Orange and Hoover Elementary in Santa Ana. The Foundation provided school supplies to all children at the elementary schools, as well as a grant of $1,000 for each school to use for educational programs. Howie Kendrick, former Angel Clyde Wright, broadcaster Jose Mota, and the Angels Strike Force also made appearances at two of the schools to kick off the program. The Angels Scholars program is a partnership between the Angels Baseball Foundation and the Orange County Department of Education's Avid Program to help students prepare for their college education. The Angels players were also busy almost every Saturday during the baseball season at local parks as part of the Angels Bank of America Youth Baseball Clinic program.
Coaches Ron Roenicke and Steve Soliz, and players Dustin Moseley, Reggie Willits, Chris Bootcheck and Maicer Izturis, tpgether with Mike Scioscia helped instruct upwards of 400 children at each clinic, teaching fundamentals as well as signing autographs for the kids. The clinics took place in Compton, Anaheim, Lake Forest, Chino Hills and Palm Springs.
Furthermore, players visited the children at local hospitals as well, including Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach, UCI Medical Center Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital of Orange County.
In addition to this, the Angels of Anaheim and the Bank of America also hosted a special day for nearly 700 children involved in local Challenger Baseball Leagues for children faced with physical challenges. Angels’ personnel on hand at Angel Stadium included alumni Matt Luke, Wright and Hudler, along with Speier and Coaches Steve Soliz and Mickey Hatcher. On the other hand, four MLB teams together with the Angels have also teamed up in the state of California for a special fund-raising auction that ran through the 25th of November to help raise money for victims of the recent California wildfires.
The Angels of Anaheim is indeed a team that is concern not only with its fans but with its fellowmen as well. This team is not just a mighty one but kind-hearted as well.
