Los Angeles Angels Information

John Lackey; third in Cy Young

John Lackey played for the Angels of Anaheim his entire career. His finest Major League season was rewarded with his best finish in the American League Cy Young Award race.

The team ace finished third in the 2007 balloting announced on Tuesday by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Cleveland's C.C. Sabathia, with 19 of the 28 first-place votes, claimed the award, with Josh Beckett of Boston second.

John Lackey, who finished 19-9 and led the AL with a 3.01 ERA, received the only first-place vote not taken by C.C. Sabathia or Josh Beckett. Lackey was named second on five ballots and third on 16 for 36 points in a 5-3-1 system. In addition to leading the league in ERA, he also tied for the lead in shutouts with two, tied for second in wins and was fifth in innings pitched with 224. Lackey eclipsed his previous season high in wins by five, and his best previous ERA was 3.44 in 2005. Incredibly tough, the Texan native missed a start because of injury for the first time in his career in late June because of shoulder tendinitis. Showing his mental toughness, John Lackey was better on the road than at home. He was 11-5 with a 2.73 ERA in 17 road outings compared to 8-4 and 3.31 in 16 home starts. However, an All-Star for the first time with an 11-5 record and 2.91 ERA at the break, he did not pitch in the San Francisco All-Star Game.

Five other pitchers received votes, but Kelvim Escobar, John Lackey's teammate, was not among them. A prominent Cy Young candidate before shoulder woes surfaced late in the season, Escobar was 18-7 with a 3.40 ERA. His 7.99 ERA in September, even though he was 3-1, clearly cost him in the voters' eyes. Dean Chance in 1964 and Bartolo Colon in 2005 are the two Angels who have won Cy Young Awards.

C.C. Sabathia is only the second Cleveland pitcher to win the Cy Young Award, joining Gaylord Perry (1972). In addition, Perry also won in '78 with the San Diego Padres. Sabathia was named on eight second-place ballots to finish with 119 points. The big left-hander had a 19-7 record with a 3.21 ERA, led the AL in innings (241), was second in complete games (four), tied for second in victories and fifth in ERA and strikeouts (209) for the AL Central champion Indians.

On the other hand, Josh Beckett (20-7, 3.27 ERA) was listed first on eight ballots, second on 14 and third on four to finish with the runner-up total of 86 points. He had the AL's highest victory total and ranked sixth in ERA and seventh in strikeouts (194) for the AL East champion Red Sox, who went on to win the World Series. Voting is conducted based solely on regular-season play.

This will prove that the Angels of Anaheim is indeed consists of the best players. You shouldn’t miss the most exciting games of this team for the upcoming season.
