Los Angeles Angels Information

Angels on Alex Rodriguez

For the Angels of Anaheim team, signing Alex Rodriguez is a great idea. The team openly acknowledges they would love to sign A-Rod. In fact, they had a meet-and-greet with Scott Boras, who is A-Rod’s agent, at the general managers’ meetings. The New York Mets also spoke with Boras, but won’t say whether they’re in or out of the competition.

In addition, Tony Reagins, who just took over as the general manager of the Angels of Anaheim, had glowing words for Rodriguez. “We had an initial conversation with Scott, and it was introductory,” he said. “He probably makes any team that he's a part of better.”

According to Tony Reagins, if talks progressed, his team would welcome a chance to speak with Alex Rodriguez. While the Mets have the cash to sign Rodriguez, they have not committed to making an offer. A-Rod is expected to sign a contract topping the record 10-year, $252-million (all currency U.S.) contract the Texas Rangers gave him before the 2001 season. Other possible destinations are thought to include the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. All those teams say they are not interested at this point. During the next-to-last day of the four-day gathering, closer Brad Lidge was traded by the Houston Astros to the Philadelphia Phillies along with infielder Eric Bruntlett for speedy outfielder Michael Bourn, right-hander Geoff Geary and minor-league third baseman Mike Costanzo. Moreover, other big names in the news included Roger Clemens, Miguel Cabrera as well as Tom Glavine.

Brad Lidge was 5-3 and had 19 saves in 27 chances for the Astros last year after converting 32 of 38 opportunities in 2006. “We're getting one of the premier closers in the game,” Ruben Amaro Jr. said, as the Phillies assistant general manager. “The marketplace, as we all know, is a little scarce out there as far as pitching. We felt this one of the best ways for us to really improve.”

However, Miguel Cabrera is the first big name being dangled. He will make more than $10-million next season, too expensive for the Marlins to retain. The Yankees needs a third baseman, having lost Alex Rodriguez, but club executive Hank Steinbrenner was clear what New York won’t do. “It's pretty obvious which players we're not going to trade,” he stated, before rattling off the team's most prized young pitchers. “Chamberlain, Hughes and even Kennedy. Not for a position player,” he added.

When other teams inquire, Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy are not available for now. According to Atlanta Braves, they would like to bring back Tom Glavine after a five-year absence. New general manager Frank Wren spoke with the two-time Cy Young Award winner and his agent, Gregg Clifton. However, Roger Clemens is ready to join the Houston Astros as a consultant. In a sign Clemens's pitching career could be over, his agent sent an e-mail message to Drayton McLane informing the club owner the seven-time Cy Young Award winner is set to start his personal-services contract with the club on the 1st of January.

Let’s just find out if Alex Rodriguez will really join the Angels of Anaheim. Watch out for the much awaited games of this outstanding team.
