NFL Football: A brief overview

The NFL consists of thirty two football teams that are separated into two main conferences; the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Each conference has four divisions. The NFL football season is played during the late summer, during autumn, and into January. Professional football teams play four exhibition games, followed by sixteen regular-season games. Football teams play one game each week, using the time between football games to recover, practice and get ready for the next football game. Each football team gets one week without a game, known as a bye, during the NFL season.

At the end of the regular football season, each conference holds playoff games to decide the conference champion. The top NFL team in each division routinely goes for the conference playoffs and is ranked number one during three based on its win-loss record. Three additional football teams, named wild cards, also succeed for playoff spots depending on their win-loss record in the conference. During the first round of the playoffs, the lowest ranked wild card team plays the lowest-ranked division champion, while the other two wild-card teams participate with each other. The losers in the playoffs are removed and the winner of each football game advances to play one of the residual division champions in the semifinals.
