New Jersey Nets History
Some things just don’t change, and it looks like the New Jersey Nets won’t change. Team president Rod Thorn has said the starting five is fine as it is. They are led by point guard, Jason Kidd, shooting guard Vince Carter, and small forward Richard Jefferson. The “big three” has been the majority of the offense carrying the team for most of the season.
The New Jersey Nets posted a record of 49-33, nine wins better than the previous season. They won the Atlantic Division finishing ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors, and New York Knicks. The New Jersey Nets qualified for the playoffs and passed the first round defeating the Indiana Pacers in six games, but they lost in the quarterfinals against a strong Miami Heat team.
Looking to add just two things to their roster, the New Jersey Nets want more depth, and more size. Power forward Nenad Krstic improved his game over the duration of the season finishing third for the Most Improved Player of the Year Award. Jason Collins has also proved he can be a defensive presence down low. However, since Jason Kidd led the team in rebounds per game averaging 7.3, the New Jersey Nets definitely need another rebounder.
If the New Jersey Nets are able to find another rebounder, it can lead to more fast breaks and a higher paced offense, which the squad hopes to do. Those usually on the receiving end of Kidd’s passes, Carter and Jefferson, showed they can flourish playing together. After coming from the Toronto Raptors, Vince Carter resurrected his career and maintained his reputation as a “high flyer.”
The New Jersey Nets aren’t looking to sign any free agents in the offseason but they do have their mid-level exception and $1 million exception. In the draft, they hold the 22nd and 23rd pick, the 22nd coming from the Los Angeles Clippers. After being dominated by Shaquille O’Neal in the playoffs, the New Jersey Nets need a defensive enforcer down low. They have worked out Tarence Kinsey from South Carolina and Siena’s Antoine Jordan as well as Kenny Adeleke from Hartford and Florida State’s Alexander Johnson. Jordan Farmar of UCLA was also invited to work out. Adeleke and Johnson are both big men who have a strong rebounding and blocking presence.
Next season, the Atlantic Division won’t see many changes as the Philadelphia 76ers are most likely to keep their team together if they can’t find a taker for Chris Webber. The Boston Celtics aren’t going to make changes either as they continue to improve their young team led by Paul Pierce. The New York Knicks seem to keep on taking steps back as they have problems on the team and front office. The only team that seems to be on the upside is the Toronto Raptors because of the arrival of General Manager Jerry Colangelo and their first overall pick in the draft.
